Short answer: Both Chromatic and Applitools can turn existing Storybook stories into visual tests, but they compare changes differently and have different workflow, deployment, and billing considerations. Chromatic documents pixel-based snapshot diffs and Storybook-focused workflows; Applitools describes Visual AI, configurable match levels, and broader testing coverage. Neither method is proven more accurate for every interface by the available product documentation, so choose by how your team wants to review changes, what else it must test, and how you need to deploy it.

How each product fits a Storybook workflow

Storybook visual testing captures stories and compares them with known-good baselines. Storybook identifies @chromatic-com/storybook as its official addon and describes Chromatic as a cloud service for cross-browser visual testing. See Storybook’s visual testing documentation.

Chromatic

Chromatic builds and uploads your Storybook to its cloud, captures UI snapshots, and compares them with baselines. Teams can review changes through the Storybook addon and CI workflows. Chromatic also documents snapshot-compatible workflows for Vitest browser mode, Playwright, and Cypress. Details are in its Storybook documentation and snapshot documentation.

Applitools

Applitools provides a Storybook addon that runs within Storybook and can also be run from a CLI in CI. Its product materials describe checks per story or component, reuse of existing stories, and grouping similar changes for review. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified performance results. See Applitools’ Storybook page.

How their visual comparisons differ

Question Chromatic Applitools
Comparison method Documents pixel diffs between snapshots and baselines. Chromatic snapshot documentation Describes Visual AI and configurable match levels. Applitools’ product page
What the difference means A pixel-based difference identifies visual changes against the baseline; your team decides whether a change is expected. Visual AI and match-level settings are intended to shape how visual differences are assessed; check the settings available for your integration.

These descriptions distinguish product approaches; they do not establish that one catches more real defects or produces fewer false positives for every design system. Evaluate both against representative stories, especially states with animation, dynamic data, or small rendering differences that matter to your team.

Review and baseline maintenance

The practical workload is not just how a diff is generated; it is how quickly developers can identify, approve, or reject a change and keep baselines trustworthy.

Chromatic’s documented workflow

Chromatic documents baseline and branch workflows, with review available from Storybook and CI. Consider how your team routes approvals and whether branch changes create the review path you expect. Its product documentation describes the workflow, but does not establish that review is faster than Applitools in a controlled comparison.

Applitools’ documented workflow

Applitools says its review experience can group similar changes. That claim appears in Applitools-authored product and comparison materials, not an independent usability study. Ask whether grouped review matches your team’s ownership model: grouping can be useful when changes repeat across stories, but reviewers still need to verify that each affected state is acceptable.

Coverage beyond Storybook components

If your visual tests begin and end with isolated components, both products document Storybook entry points. If you also need to cover other parts of an application, compare the exact SDKs, frameworks, and plan requirements for the intended scope.

  • Chromatic: documents Storybook and compatible Vitest browser mode, Playwright, and Cypress snapshot workflows. See its snapshot documentation.
  • Applitools: describes coverage beyond Storybook components, including web, mobile, desktop, and PDF testing. These are vendor claims; confirm support for your target platform and integration directly. See its Storybook page and its comparison page.

Deployment and data requirements

Applitools’ comparison page describes public SaaS, dedicated cloud, and on-premises options, and characterizes Chromatic as hosted SaaS. This is a vendor-authored comparison. Deployment terms can affect security review, data handling, and procurement, so confirm current availability, residency, and contractual terms with each provider rather than relying on a comparison page alone. What usage and pricing look like

The billing units are different and should not be compared as if a snapshot and a checkpoint were equivalent. Forecast your own expected workload: stories or tests multiplied by builds, browser configurations, and any additional modes you run.

Chromatic snapshot billing

Chromatic’s billing documentation assigns 1 billed snapshot to a captured snapshot, 0.2 billed snapshots to a TurboSnap copied snapshot, and 0 to a bypassed snapshot. Its current free-plan FAQ lists 5,000 snapshots per month; when that allowance is exhausted, testing and review pause until the next monthly reset unless the account upgrades. These are Chromatic’s published terms, accessed in 2026; check the live billing pages before budgeting.

Applitools listed pricing

Applitools’ official pricing page lists Starter at $667 per month, paid annually, with 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints, and lists Storybook component testing among its included features. These are vendor-published terms checked in 2026 and may change. The published checkpoint quantities are not directly comparable to Chromatic’s billed snapshots; ask Applitools for a quote based on your planned checkpoint volume and plan. Applitools pricing

Estimate before choosing

  • Count stories or test cases actually captured per build, not just the number of components in your library.
  • Multiply by expected CI builds and browser configurations; account for modes and other capture behavior your setup adds.
  • For Chromatic, estimate how many snapshots are captured, copied through TurboSnap, or bypassed, then compare the result with your monthly allowance.
  • For Applitools, confirm how your planned tests map to component or page checkpoints and request pricing for that volume.

Which should you choose?

If your priority is… Investigate first Why
A documented Storybook-centered cloud workflow and explicit snapshot billing behavior Chromatic Its documentation details Storybook, baseline, CI, compatible test workflows, and billed-snapshot categories.
Visual AI match settings, grouped review, or a broader platform scope Applitools Its product materials describe these options, including coverage beyond Storybook; confirm exact integrations and plan terms.
Strict deployment or data-handling requirements Compare both directly Applitools describes multiple deployment options in its comparison materials; verify current terms with both vendors.

ScreenshotNeo as an additional screenshot option

For standalone website screenshots rather than Storybook baseline testing, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a substitute for the Storybook-specific comparison workflows above.

Or skip the browser setup:

One GET request can return a screenshot; adapt the target URL as needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
