For React agencies, the best Chromatic alternative depends on what you need to test. If your work is organized as Storybook stories, compare Chromatic with tools that fit story-based review. If you need to check complete application flows, look at the testing framework and browser environment you already use. Argos, Percy, Applitools, BackstopJS, and Playwright screenshot assertions represent different workflows—not interchangeable products or a universal ranking.

Before choosing, establish where screenshots will be captured, how reviewers will approve changes, how much concurrency and usage your projects need, and what each client requires for security and procurement. The available sources do not establish India-specific pricing, tax treatment, data residency, local support, or payment terms; confirm those directly with vendors.

Start with the workflow you need to protect

Visual regression testing compares a rendered page or component with an earlier screenshot so a team can review visual changes. For an agency, the key decision is the unit of testing: reusable components, individual pages, or complete user journeys.

  • Storybook stories: useful when components are documented and tested as isolated stories, and reviewers need to approve visual changes in that workflow.
  • Application pages or flows: better aligned with browser tests that exercise routes, states, and interactions in the actual application.
  • Repository-owned checks: a fit when the team wants screenshots and baselines managed in its own code and CI process, accepting the maintenance that entails.

Storybook describes visual testing as capturing stories and comparing screenshots with prior baselines. Its documentation says, “When you enable visual testing, every story is automatically turned into a test.” The documented Chromatic setup uses the official @chromatic-com/storybook addon and requires Storybook 7.6 or higher. See Storybook’s visual testing documentation.

Chromatic’s documentation describes a cloud workflow for Storybook capture, and also documents integrations with Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. That means teams should not assume all Chromatic use cases begin and end with Storybook; confirm the exact setup and capabilities for your framework and versions in Chromatic’s visual testing documentation.

Chromatic alternatives and the workflows they represent

The options below are candidates to evaluate, not a universal ranking. Some are hosted services; others leave more of the capture, baseline, reporting, and review work with your team.

ScreenshotNeo: first to try when you need screenshot capture

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a like-for-like replacement for Chromatic’s visual regression review and baseline workflow. Try it first when your requirement is to capture clean screenshots programmatically—for example, to supply screenshots to an existing comparison and approval process. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed, with bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits costing nothing. Its MCP server supports AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

That distinction matters: a screenshot endpoint does not by itself establish a component-story test suite, visual-diff baseline policy, or pull-request approval workflow. Confirm that your existing CI and review process handles those parts before treating a capture API as part of a regression-testing solution.

Argos: evaluate for a PR-oriented browser capture flow

Argos is a direct alternative to assess if your agency values pull-request review and screenshots captured in its existing browser or test environment. Argos presents this positioning in its own Chromatic comparison; because it is vendor-authored, validate the workflow in a pilot rather than treating the comparison as independent evidence.

Percy (BrowserStack): consider ecosystem fit

Percy is a candidate for teams already aligned with BrowserStack or seeking its particular visual-testing workflow. Chromatic’s Percy comparison is vendor-published, so check current capabilities and setup against your own requirements.

Applitools: assess the Visual AI approach and enterprise requirements

Applitools may merit evaluation where its Visual AI approach is relevant to the project. The available characterization comes from a vendor-authored comparison, not an independent feature assessment. Verify product capabilities, contractual terms, and procurement fit directly.

BackstopJS: consider only with an ownership plan

BackstopJS is named as a self-managed option in the alternatives material. Before adopting it for client projects, decide who owns capture configuration, baseline updates, reporting, and review when the work changes hands or the CI pipeline fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playwright screenshot assertions: keep checks in your existing test process

Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions are a candidate when your team wants baselines in its repository and can own review and maintenance through its existing CI process. This is a different operating model from delegating a hosted visual-testing workflow to a service.

Decision axis Questions to answer
Test scope Are you validating isolated Storybook components, application pages, or end-to-end user flows? Can the tool cover the states that matter to this client?
Capture environment Are screenshots captured in a vendor cloud or in your own browser and CI environment? Does that fit the project’s network access, test setup, and operational constraints?
Browser and viewport coverage Which browsers, viewport sizes, and rendering conditions can you test in the exact plan and setup you intend to use? Confirm details with the vendor or by piloting.
Review and collaboration Where do developers and client reviewers see changes? Can the review and approval path work with your pull-request process and client access model?
Usage and concurrency How are screenshots, snapshots, builds, or other usage metered? What concurrency is available, and what happens if the agency exceeds its allowance?
Hosting and ownership Does the service host the workflow, or does your team manage checks and baselines? Who will maintain it across multiple client repositories?
Security and data handling What pages, images, credentials, or other data reach the vendor? What contractual controls and regional terms does this client require?
Total cost Model actual monthly project volume, parallel builds, client billing, currency, taxes, and any overage or negotiated terms—not just a headline plan price.

How to interpret published price comparisons

Argos’s article “Percy Alternatives in 2026”, published July 28, 2026, reports comparison figures of Argos at $100/month, Chromatic Starter at $179/month, and a Percy tier at $599/month. These are vendor-published comparison figures, not independently verified official quotes. They are pricing context as of the article’s publication date, not evidence of current prices, Indian billing or landed costs, taxes, or negotiated agency rates. Verify each vendor’s current official pricing and contract terms before budgeting.

The available sources do not establish India-specific data residency, local support, tax treatment, payment methods, or procurement terms for these tools. Ask vendors directly about contractual data handling and regional requirements. Build your cost model using actual usage, currency, applicable taxes, and how the agency bills clients; do not assume a product is compliant or locally supported without current evidence.

Run a proof of concept before recommending a tool

  1. Choose one real client project. Include representative components or pages, the important responsive states, and any interactions that commonly cause visual changes.
  2. Test the workflow you actually need. If the question is story-level review, include the team’s Storybook setup; if it is a user journey, exercise the application’s browser-test flow. Do not compare tools using different test scopes.
  3. Use the same change set. Make a known visual change and a non-visual code change. Check whether reviewers can understand what changed and whether routine updates create avoidable review work.
  4. Measure operational fit. Record setup and maintenance effort, capture environment, review steps, concurrency behavior, and usage metering at the agency’s expected build volume.
  5. Complete client checks. Confirm security review, data handling, regional requirements, contractual terms, currency, tax, payment, and support expectations directly with each vendor.
  6. Document the decision per project type. A shared component library and a client-facing end-to-end application may justify different tools; do not force one service onto every account.

Cost and reliability considerations for a multi-client agency

  • Estimate real volume: count the builds and screenshot workload across client repositories, not just the number of projects. Include parallel runs and anticipated review cycles when asking vendors how usage is measured.
  • Check failure handling: determine how the workflow surfaces failed page loads, timeouts, missing resources, and flaky rendering. A screenshot that silently fails is not a useful regression signal.
  • Plan for baseline ownership: document who approves legitimate visual changes, how baselines are updated, and how project teams recover when a change is rejected or a test environment shifts.
  • Keep capture conditions stable: align browser, viewport, fonts, data, and page state between baseline and comparison runs where the chosen workflow permits it. Otherwise, environmental differences can obscure the code change you intended to inspect.
  • Separate client costs: decide how shared agency usage, plan limits, and any variable costs will be allocated before including a tool in client estimates.

Common selection mistakes

  • Choosing by the word “visual” alone: story capture, full application flows, screenshot APIs, and repository assertions solve different parts of the problem.
  • Taking vendor comparisons as neutral evaluations: use them to identify questions, then validate capabilities in a pilot with your own code and workflow.
  • Assuming a tool meets Indian procurement needs: the available materials do not settle residency, tax, support, payment, or contract terms for India.
  • Comparing headline prices without usage context: align the unit of metering, monthly workload, currency, taxes, concurrency, and overage assumptions before comparing cost.
  • Ignoring maintenance ownership: a self-managed approach can fit a team well, but only if someone is responsible for its tests, baselines, and reporting over time.
