First identify whether the video is buffering—pausing while it loads—or stuttering and skipping while playback continues. Buffering usually points first to the connection; ongoing stutter can also involve the app, device, browser, or cable to the TV. Compare a few streams and devices before changing settings, then work through the checks below.

Is it buffering, stuttering, or just one stream?

The word “choppy” can describe different problems, and the distinction helps narrow the cause.

  • Buffering or loading: Playback pauses while more video data arrives. Check connection stability, Wi-Fi signal, and competing network use first.
  • Stuttering or skipping: Playback continues, but motion is jerky or frames appear to be missed. Check the device, app or browser, operating system, and any cable between a playback device and the TV. Netflix notes that device and video-cable issues can cause stutter; on a computer, resource-consuming tabs or applications may also matter (Netflix stutter troubleshooting).
  • One program or live stream: Try another title or stream. An individual stream’s configuration may be involved; Twitch notes that a broadcaster’s unusually high bitrate can cause playback trouble (Twitch playback troubleshooting).

Weak or unstable internet, Wi-Fi interference, household network activity, outdated software, device problems, stream configuration, and a TV connection cable can produce overlapping symptoms. No single symptom identifies the cause by itself (YouTube Help; Netflix buffering help; Netflix stutter help).

Compare streams, devices, and connections

Before changing settings, run simple comparisons. They are clues, not conclusive tests: outages, content restrictions, and device compatibility can also affect playback.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  1. Play another video on the same service.
  2. If available, try a different streaming service on the same device.
  3. Try the affected stream on another device, if practical.
  4. If you can, test the same device on another network, or another device on your home network.

If one title or live stream fails while others play, the issue may be specific to that content or stream. If multiple services and devices fail on the same home network, focus on the connection or network equipment. These comparisons follow the diagnostic approach in YouTube, Netflix, and Twitch support guidance.

Check connection speed and Wi-Fi conditions

A speed test gives you a snapshot of the connection, not a full explanation of intermittent drops, weak Wi-Fi, or other household use. Netflix points viewers to Fast.com and recommends these stable connection speeds for its own service; they are not universal requirements or a guarantee when other people or devices are using the connection:

Netflix playback resolution Netflix recommended stable connection speed
720p HD 3 Mbps or higher
1080p Full HD 5 Mbps or higher
4K UHD 15 Mbps or higher

These recommendations are from the Netflix Help Center, current guidance accessed in 2026. A result below the relevant figure may help explain playback trouble, but a result above it does not rule out instability or other causes.

Improve Wi-Fi before considering new equipment

  • Move the playback device closer to the router for a test.
  • Place the router in an open position, away from obstructions and sources of interference.
  • Pause or reduce other network activity and connected-device use while testing.
  • If available, compare playback over a different connection.

YouTube and Netflix both recommend variants of moving devices closer, improving router placement, and reducing competing use (YouTube Help; Netflix Help Center). If you suspect Wi-Fi, a direct cable connection can be a useful comparison where your playback device supports it, including through an appropriate adapter. It is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.

  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

Adjust playback quality and refresh the app or device

Test a lower quality setting

Temporarily lower video quality, or choose Auto if the service offers it. Reducing quality means less image detail but may make playback easier on an unstable connection. Twitch says Auto selects a quality suited to the connection in real time; PBS notes that lower quality can reduce picture quality (Twitch Help; PBS Help). If lowering quality changes nothing, the cause may be unrelated to bandwidth, such as a device, cable, or service-side issue.

Restart, update, and close other applications

  1. Close and reopen the streaming app, or reload the video in the browser.
  2. Restart the playback device.
  3. Install available updates for the app, browser, or operating system.
  4. On a computer, close unnecessary browser tabs and background applications.
  5. If the service provides the option, clear the app cache.

These are diagnostic steps rather than guaranteed fixes. Netflix’s explanation is that “your device may have a weak or unstable internet connection, or it may need an update” (Netflix Help Center, “TV show or movie loads slowly or keeps buffering”). Similar restart, update, and app or browser checks appear in YouTube, Netflix, Netflix stutter troubleshooting, and PBS guidance.

Know when to contact the service or your ISP

Contact the streaming service

If other content plays normally but one title or live stream repeatedly fails, report that specific content to the service. Include whether another video on the same service works and whether the problem occurs on another device. For a live stream, broadcaster settings may be relevant (Twitch playback troubleshooting).

Contact your internet provider

If the problem affects several services or devices on the same connection after the basic checks, ask your ISP about outages, connection issues, or modem/router problems. Netflix advises contacting the ISP when its connection troubleshooting does not resolve the problem (Netflix buffering help). Give the ISP useful observations: whether one or multiple devices are affected, whether each is using Wi-Fi or a direct cable connection, and whether the problem is continuous or intermittent.
