Start with your exact drone and controller: the right app is the one that supports that combination and the task you want to do. Use the manufacturer’s app for aircraft control, camera operation, and maintenance; add a third-party app only when it supports your setup and provides a needed feature such as automated routes or mapping. Airspace-awareness and authorization apps serve a different purpose—they do not control your drone or, by themselves, make a flight legal.
How to choose the right drone app
- Identify your aircraft and controller. Find their full model names. Compatibility can vary by aircraft generation, controller, phone, operating system, and app version.
- Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information. Confirm the supported app and any device or controller requirements before installing an app or buying a phone. For DJI, the Compatible Apps and Download page maps product families to apps.
- Match the app to your task. Decide whether you need basic flight and camera controls, an automated route, mapping or image processing, or airspace information and authorization. These are distinct functions, and one app may not cover them all.
- Check what still requires the native app. A third-party app may not replace the manufacturer’s software for firmware updates, calibration, or other maintenance. Follow the app provider’s instructions for your specific aircraft.
- Verify current availability and terms. Check the provider’s current support list, operating-system requirements, geographic availability, and pricing or subscription terms before relying on an app.
Which app should you use for your drone?
DJI Mavic Air 2 and other consumer DJI aircraft
For a DJI Mavic Air 2, begin with DJI’s supported app for that aircraft and controller. DJI Fly is the consumer app DJI describes as supporting flight status, camera settings, shooting, editing, and sharing. Use DJI’s current app compatibility page to confirm the recommended app for your exact setup rather than assuming that a phone app works with every DJI controller.
DJI enterprise aircraft
Enterprise models have their own app and controller requirements. DJI lists Pilot 2 for aircraft including Matrice 4, Matrice 300 RTK, Matrice 30, Mavic 3 Enterprise, Matrice 350 RTK, and Matrice 3D/3TD. DJI says Pilot 2 works only on controllers with built-in screens, updates with controller firmware, and cannot be installed separately. It is not a general-purpose app to download onto any phone. Check DJI’s app listing and Pilot 2 information for your aircraft and controller.

DJI’s DJI Fly support page lists iOS 13.0 or later and recommends iPhone 11 or newer. For Android, it lists Android 9.0 or later and recommends mainstream flagship phones released after 2019. DJI also publishes tested phone models; that list can change. These requirements apply to DJI Fly, not to every drone brand or controller configuration. Check the current DJI Fly compatibility information before buying a phone. Some controllers have built-in screens and do not use a separate phone in the same way as mobile-device controller setups.

Third-party route planning and mapping
Consider a third-party app when its specific workflow solves a problem your manufacturer’s app does not. For example, you might need to plan automated routes or capture imagery for mapping. Support must be checked by exact aircraft and controller: a service may support processing images from a drone without supporting flight control for that drone. DroneDeploy’s supported aircraft matrix distinguishes flight support from processing support.
For DJI aircraft, Litchi’s compatibility guide lists supported models, while noting that Mini 3 and newer models need Litchi Pilot instead. Its documentation describes features including Track mode and readable flight logs. Check the current compatibility guide and product information before choosing it; support for one model should not be assumed to extend to another.

What each kind of drone app does

Keep maintenance and flight planning distinct
Flying through a third-party app does not necessarily eliminate the need for the manufacturer’s app. DroneDeploy’s guidance says some settings and calibrations may need to be handled in DJI Fly or DJI GO 4, and recommends updating firmware before flying through DroneDeploy. Follow the provider’s instructions for the supported aircraft rather than treating a third-party app as a universal replacement. Airspace apps are not flight-control apps
In the United States, B4UFLY is an FAA airspace-awareness service: it helps recreational flyers understand where they can and cannot fly. The FAA’s February 1, 2024 announcement named Airspace Link, AutoPylot, Avision, and UASidekick as B4UFLY service providers at that time. Provider information can change, so consult the FAA’s current B4UFLY page.

LAANC is different: it is a mechanism for eligible pilots to obtain FAA authorization for operations in controlled airspace. The FAA’s April 5, 2024 announcement describes LAANC as supporting authorization for operations below 400 feet and explains that service suppliers do not independently grant flight access. A planning or control app does not itself establish that a flight is legal. Check the FAA’s current LAANC information and applicable rules for your operation. These statements are specific to the United States; airspace tools and requirements vary by country. DroneDeploy likewise says its app does not restrict flight locations and places legal compliance responsibility on the operator; see its flight-app guidance.

Before you install or buy
- Confirm the exact aircraft and controller models are supported together.
- Check the current app version, phone operating system, tested-device list, and built-in-screen requirements.
- Make sure the app performs the function you need; processing support does not necessarily mean flight support.
- Find out whether firmware updates, calibration, or other maintenance still require the manufacturer’s app.
- For airspace services, confirm the country or region served and whether the service provides awareness, authorization workflow support, or both.
- Check the provider directly for current prices, subscriptions, and support status; comparable current pricing is not established here.
