For a web page PDF that is readable both on screen and on paper, start with the browser’s Print preview, choose the paper size and orientation that match the destination, then adjust scale only as much as needed to prevent clipping. Use margins and headers or footers to balance usable space with source details, and enable backgrounds only when their colors or images carry information. Preview the result: web pages can use a separate print layout, so a PDF may not look exactly like the screen.

How do I save a web page as a PDF?

Open the page’s print dialog, choose a PDF destination rather than a physical printer, review the preview, and save. The exact menu names and available options vary by browser and operating system. Firefox documents a “Save to PDF” destination; in other setups, the PDF destination may be provided by the system print dialog.

  1. Open Print. Use the browser’s print command or keyboard shortcut. In the preview, look for a destination or printer selector and choose the PDF option.
  2. Choose the pages. Keep all pages for a complete copy, or enter a page range if you need only a section. Check the preview to confirm the range and page count.
  3. Set paper and orientation. Choose a size such as Letter or A4 to match the intended printer or recipient. Use portrait for conventional text pages and landscape when the content is genuinely wide.
  4. Adjust scale and margins. If content is clipped, try a fit-to-page option or a modest custom scale reduction. If the type becomes too small, restore a larger scale and consider landscape orientation or narrower margins instead.
  5. Set headers, footers, and backgrounds. Keep browser-generated title, URL, date, or page numbers when they will help identify the saved pages. Turn on background graphics only if the color or imagery matters to the meaning or intended appearance.
  6. Inspect the preview, then save. Check the first and last pages, wide tables, page breaks, and any fixed navigation or overlays before committing the PDF.

Firefox notes that “Web pages can set themselves up to appear different on paper to how they look on screen, so don’t be surprised to see some changes.” Treat preview as part of the export, not a cosmetic extra.

Which page size and orientation should I choose?

Choose the output for its destination, not simply to imitate the dimensions of the browser window. Letter or A4 is usually the practical choice when someone will print the file on a known paper size. A different page size can force reflow or scaling, so confirm that text remains legible and nothing important runs beyond the printable area.

Portrait for ordinary reading

Portrait suits articles, reports, and other mostly vertical text. It uses paper in the familiar reading direction and avoids leaving an unusually wide page for a narrow column.

Landscape for genuinely wide material

Landscape can help with spreadsheets, wide tables, diagrams, and pages with several side-by-side columns. It does not guarantee that every column will fit at a readable size: a browser may still scale the page down. Inspect the widest page in preview and compare the font size with portrait output.

Do not use landscape merely to solve a long-page problem. Orientation addresses width, while page ranges, pagination, or a print-specific layout address length and page breaks.

How do I stop a web page from getting cut off in a PDF?

First identify what is being cut off. If the right edge of a table disappears, the issue is width; if the final lines vanish, the issue may be a page break, an embedded scrollable region, or the page’s print styling. Make one adjustment at a time and recheck preview so you do not fix clipping by making all the text unreadably small.

  • For a wide page: try landscape, a fit-to-printable-area setting, or a small custom scale reduction. Edge documents fit-to-printable-area, actual-size, and custom scale choices. Actual size preserves scale but may clip content that exceeds the printable area.
  • For text that is too small after fitting: restore some scale and use landscape or narrower margins to gain width. If the page’s own print layout is poor, a browser setting may not be enough to preserve both every column and comfortable text size.
  • For content at a paper edge: reduce margins cautiously. A physical printer may have nonprintable edges, and settings in a PDF export can differ from a printer’s real printable area.
  • For missing content inside a scrollable box: a browser may print only the visible portion. A dedicated conversion tool may offer an option to expand scrollable blocks; Adobe documents such controls for Acrobat web conversion.
  • For unexpected page breaks or changed layout: inspect the print preview and try the page’s available simplified or reader presentation, if offered. The page may supply separate print styles.

There is no universal “best fit” setting: preserving every detail can make text small, while preserving text size can leave some content outside the printable area. Choose based on which matters more for that document.

What do margins, headers, and footers change?

Margins reserve whitespace around the page. Wider margins can make a document feel less crowded and leave room for notes, but reduce the area available for the page itself. Narrower margins can recover width for dense content; however, a physical printer may not print right up to the paper edge.

Headers and footers can add a title, URL, date, or page number that helps someone identify a page after it has been separated from the rest of the PDF. They also consume space and can add browser-generated labels that were not part of the original page. Turn them off when they obscure content or are unnecessary; keep them when provenance and navigation are useful.

For an archive, a page title and URL can be more useful than a visually clean but context-free printout. For a handout, page numbers may matter more. Inspect the first and last page because labels can interact with margins or page content differently across the document.

Should I print background graphics?

Enable background graphics when a background color, shaded table cell, or image communicates meaning or is essential to the intended appearance. Leave them off when they are purely decorative or when a simpler, ink-conscious printout is the goal. No quantified ink-saving estimate is established here, so treat any savings as dependent on the page and printer rather than as a fixed percentage.

Firefox’s Simplified format removes surrounding page material and changes styling; Firefox also says that choosing Simplified disables background printing. If you need both a simplified layout and background colors, compare the available output rather than assuming those settings can be combined.

When is a simplified format useful?

A simplified or reader-style print option can help when navigation, ads, or other surrounding material distract from the article. It may also alter typography, spacing, and images, so it is a readability tradeoff rather than a faithful copy. Use the normal print output when visual fidelity, page branding, or background elements matter. Where a simplified choice is available, check that headings, links, images, and any essential tables survived the transformation.

What PDF options do dedicated converters add?

Acrobat’s web-page conversion controls go beyond a basic browser print dialog. Adobe documents options for bookmarks, PDF tags, headers and footers, HTML encoding, font and color defaults, retained backgrounds, image conversion, expansion of scrollable blocks, page layout, and fitting wide content. The exact controls depend on Acrobat’s version and conversion workflow; do not assume a browser extension or another PDF application exposes the same interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These controls are useful when the browser’s print preview cannot produce the structure or layout you need. For a routine article save, the browser flow is simpler. For a document that needs bookmarks, tags, or special handling of scrollable sections, compare the converted output with the source and check that the extra structure is actually present.

What should developers know about automated PDF export?

Automated browser exports are not simply screenshots placed on paper. Print CSS can change the page, CSS @page rules can specify dimensions and margins, and the PDF API’s settings can interact with those rules. Test representative pages—including long articles, wide tables, backgrounds, and pages with print-specific styles—instead of relying on one preset.

Playwright

Playwright’s page.pdf() uses print CSS media. Its documented controls include dimensions, margins, scale, print backgrounds, page ranges, tagged output, and preferCSSPageSize. When that preference is enabled, CSS @page takes priority; without it, content is scaled to fit the selected paper size. That distinction matters if the site already defines print dimensions: letting the page’s CSS lead may preserve its intended layout, while the selected paper size may otherwise trigger scaling.

Electron

Electron’s printToPDF provides paper size, orientation, margins, scale, page ranges, header and footer templates, and background printing. Its documentation describes tagged-PDF and document-outline generation as experimental and cautions that tagged output may not fully meet PDF/UA and WCAG standards. Treat those options as workflow aids to validate, not as proof of accessibility conformance.

Choose settings by output goal

  • Paper fidelity: set the intended paper size and orientation, then check whether CSS @page or the API controls are taking precedence.
  • Fit: use scale and margins to control clipping, but verify that smaller text remains usable.
  • Visual fidelity: enable background printing only when needed, and test pages whose design depends on background colors or images.
  • Navigation and accessibility: request tags or outlines only where supported, then inspect the generated document and do not equate an API flag with standards compliance.
  • Repeatability: test a representative set of page types after changes to print CSS, browser versions, or export settings.

Or skip the browser setup

For an API-driven capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from a GET request. The following documented call saves a web-page image; use the PDF options in the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for PDF output rather than assuming this image example creates a PDF.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These are screenshot-service options, not substitutes for reviewing print CSS, page size, or PDF accessibility when those are your actual requirements. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.

Why does my saved PDF look different from the page?

Web pages may define print-specific styles, and browsers can suppress or rearrange elements that are useful on screen but not on paper. Headers, fixed navigation, backgrounds, and dynamic content may behave differently in the print layout. Use the print preview to identify the change, try a simplified view only if preserving the original styling is not essential, and check the saved PDF itself when the result matters.

Frequently asked questions

Does Save to PDF save the whole web page?

It saves the pages included by the print layout and selected page range. Content that is dynamically loaded or confined to a scrollable area may not appear as expected, so inspect the preview and final PDF.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose actual size or fit to page?

Choose actual size when preserving scale is more important and the content fits the printable area. Choose fit when preventing clipping matters more; then check that text remains readable.

Does enabling PDF tags guarantee accessibility?

No. Support and output quality vary. Electron explicitly warns that its experimental tagged-PDF generation may not fully adhere to PDF/UA and WCAG standards, so the resulting document needs validation.
