For the primary drive, start by looking for an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD—but confirm your laptop’s full model number before buying. “A515-45” covers multiple configurations, and Acer’s specifications do not establish that every one has the same storage options or hardware.
Which SSD fits the primary slot?
The clearest documented match is an M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. Acer specifies an M.2 2280 drive using PCIe 3.0 x4 and NVMe for the A515-45-R478 configuration in its Brazilian product listing. This is useful guidance for that SKU, not proof that every A515-45 variant has identical storage specifications.
Acer’s Aspire 5 manual, revised in December 2020, covers A515-45, A515-45G, A515-45S, and A515-46. That family-level coverage does not mean the models share every storage detail.
Check your exact model before ordering
Find the complete model or SKU—not just “A515-45”—on the laptop’s product label, original packaging, or system information. Then check Acer’s specifications for that model and the relevant country or region. For example, Acer’s US page for the A515-45-R74Z lists a 256 GB PCIe SSD, but does not specify the M.2 length on that page.

Use this order when shopping:
- Match the slot and interface. For an M.2 primary drive, verify both the physical size and NVMe/PCIe compatibility. The R478 listing specifies M.2 2280 and PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe.
- Choose capacity for your needs. Do not assume a maximum capacity applies across the A515-45 family; the available evidence does not establish one for every configuration.
- Compare the drive itself. Once compatibility is confirmed, compare price, warranty, endurance, and performance. A drive’s advertised speed alone does not establish that it is the right fit for your laptop.
Can you add a second 2.5-inch SATA SSD?
Possibly, depending on the exact configuration and the parts included or available for it. Acer’s Brazil listing for the A515-45-R478 describes a free 2.5-inch SATA 3 bay alongside the occupied M.2 slot and specifies support for a drive up to 2 TB. Treat that as a specification for the listed R478 configuration, not a family-wide guarantee.
An Acer Community accepted answer about the A515-45-R74Z also describes one M.2 PCIe 3×4 slot and one 2.5-inch SATA-3 space. That is community guidance rather than an Acer product specification. Before buying a second drive, confirm that your particular laptop has the bay and determine whether it needs a SATA cable or mounting bracket.

- 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠-𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝟓 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: The Predator GM9 SSD delivers top speeds of up to 14,500 MB/s sequential read and 11,000 MB/s sequential write, thanks to a PCIe 5.0 interface and the latest NVMe 2.0 standard. Designed for demanding applications, the Predator GM9 ensures smooth performance for tasks that require fast data access, such as AAA gaming, 4K/8K video production and AI computing.
What to buy for each upgrade path
| Upgrade path | What to look for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Replace or upgrade the primary drive | M.2 2280 NVMe SSD is the best-supported starting point; Acer specifies PCIe 3.0 x4 for the R478. | Check your full SKU’s storage specification. The R478 details do not establish compatibility limits for every A515-45 configuration. |
| Add a second drive | 2.5-inch SATA SSD, if your configuration has the bay. | Confirm the bay, cable, and mounting hardware for your exact unit. Acer’s R478 listing describes this option; it may not apply to other SKUs. |
What remains uncertain without your full SKU
Without the complete model number and region, the exact maximum capacity, whether a 2.5-inch bay is present, and whether the required SATA cable or bracket is included cannot be confirmed. If you share those details—and whether you want to replace the existing drive or add a second one—you can narrow the choice to the appropriate drive type before ordering.
