Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThere is no responsible model-specific mSATA SSD recommendation here without evidence that the exact drive has power-loss protection (PLP) and low, sustained synchronous-write latency. Before shopping, confirm that your workload actually issues synchronous writes: a SLOG helps only that write path, not general pool performance.
When does a ZFS SLOG help?
ZFS already has a ZFS Intent Log (ZIL) on every pool. A separate log vdev—commonly called a SLOG—moves that log off the main pool devices. It is not a general write cache: asynchronous writes do not use it. OpenZFS states that “If your workload has no synchronous writes, a SLOG changes nothing.”
Sync-heavy NFS, database, or virtual-machine workloads are examples that may benefit. Measure or otherwise verify the workload’s sync-write behavior before buying hardware; the workload label alone does not establish that a SLOG will help.

What to check in an mSATA candidate
mSATA describes a form factor and interface, not the behaviors that make a drive suitable as a SLOG. Check the exact model rather than relying on capacity, connector fit, or sequential throughput.

- Power-loss protection: Look for manufacturer documentation or reliable independent evidence that the drive protects its metadata and flushed data during power loss. OpenZFS identifies these as the relevant protections for ZFS; protection for unflushed data is not required for its stated requirement.
- Sustained synchronous-write latency: Seek evidence under a workload and queue depth relevant to your use. A peak sequential-throughput figure does not establish low latency for synchronous writes.
- Endurance and condition: Compare the endurance rating with the expected write workload. For a used drive, establish its remaining life rather than treating its original rating as its present condition.
- Compatibility: Confirm the system supports the drive’s interface and keying, that it physically fits, and that the controller and operating system can see it.
- Capacity and price: Match capacity to the workload instead of assuming a larger drive improves SLOG performance. The available sources do not provide comparable mSATA model benchmarks or prices, so they do not support a quantitative product ranking.
How much SLOG space do you need?
OpenZFS says roughly 4 GB is enough for most NAND SLOG workloads between transaction-group commits. This is an approximate, workload-dependent guideline, not a universal sizing guarantee; buying a higher-capacity mSATA drive does not by itself improve the log device.
OpenZFS also discusses overprovisioning NAND to improve IOPS. If you use the secure-erase/partition method described in its tuning guidance, do not repurpose the space reserved for overprovisioning.

Should you mirror the SLOG?
OpenZFS supports mirrored log devices. Mirroring can reduce the risk associated with an unmirrored SLOG; whether that risk warrants another device depends on the consequences of losing the log and on the platform and pool behavior. Check those details before changing pool topology.
A SLOG is also distinct from L2ARC: L2ARC is a read cache, while a SLOG serves synchronous writes.

What not to use as a speed fix
Do not set sync=disabled to speed up writes whose acknowledged completion matters. FreeBSD documentation explains that the pool may remain consistent while applications lose recent writes they believed had been safely committed. That trades away the sync-write guarantee rather than making a SLOG safer or faster.

- Confirm that the workload issues synchronous writes and that those writes are a performance concern.
- For each exact mSATA model, verify PLP for flushed data and drive metadata, then check sustained synchronous-write latency and endurance.
- Confirm physical, interface, controller, and operating-system compatibility with your system.
- Choose capacity for the workload rather than for headline size; treat roughly 4 GB as an OpenZFS guideline for most NAND SLOG workloads between transaction-group commits, not a guarantee.
- Decide whether a mirrored log device is appropriate for the failure risk you can accept, after checking platform and pool behavior.
Without exact-model PLP and latency evidence, an mSATA drive that fits is not a substantiated SLOG choice. The available information does not establish a specific currently validated mSATA recommendation.
