For most website screenshots, use PNG. Its lossless compression preserves small text, crisp interface edges, diagrams and transparency. If you need smaller downloads, test lossless WebP and compare the result; consider AVIF when file size matters most and you can provide a fallback. Use JPEG mainly for photographic content or when some loss is acceptable.
Why screenshot content changes the format choice
A website screenshot is usually made of text, flat-color controls, borders, icons and sharp transitions—not just photographic detail. Those edges make compression artifacts conspicuous: a lossy image can blur letterforms or introduce colored fringes around text and lines. For this reason, MDN recommends lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos and line art.
“Lossless” means encoding does not discard image information to reduce the file. It does not mean every lossless format produces the same file size. PNG and lossless WebP both preserve the image, but their compression methods differ. A lossy format can be substantially smaller, but the trade-off is a change in image data that may be visible where the screenshot needs to remain legible.
Which format should you choose?
| Format | Best fit | Text and edges | Transparency | Delivery considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PNG | Default for UI screenshots, documentation, diagrams and logos | Lossless; preserves sharp detail | Full alpha transparency | Broadly supported by major browsers |
| Lossless WebP | Smaller files when your browser baseline supports it | Lossless mode preserves detail | Supported | Keep a PNG fallback if older clients matter |
| AVIF | Reducing bytes when you can serve fallbacks | Supports lossless and lossy modes; inspect the result | Supported | Less historical browser support; does not progressively render |
| JPEG | Photographic screenshots or content where some loss is acceptable | Lossy; may damage text and flat-color edges | No alpha channel | Universally supported |
| SVG | Artwork that is genuinely a diagram, icon or logo | Vector geometry stays sharp when scaled | Can represent transparency | Not a practical substitute for a complex full-page screenshot |
PNG: the dependable master
Choose PNG when the screenshot must be read, archived, annotated or reused in documentation. It is lossless, supports full alpha transparency and works across major browsers. It is a sound master file even if you later create smaller delivery versions. The trade-off is that a PNG can be larger than a lossy alternative, especially for a large capture.

Lossless WebP: test for a smaller equivalent
WebP has both lossy and lossless modes. MDN says lossless WebP images are typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG format. That is a typical comparison, not a guaranteed saving for an individual screenshot. Test your actual image and keep PNG available for clients outside the browser baseline you support.
AVIF: use with a fallback plan
AVIF can be attractive when transfer size is a priority. MDN reports that lossy AVIF images can be around 50% smaller than JPEG images at visually similar compression levels; that figure is directional, not a promise for every capture. AVIF also supports lossless encoding, alpha transparency, animation, HDR and wide color gamut. Its browser support is newer than PNG or JPEG, and it does not progressively render, so offer another format as a fallback.
MDN lists support in Chrome 85, Edge 121, Opera 71, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.1. Those version figures identify support floors in the guide; they do not establish what every audience uses today. If you cannot control or verify your audience’s browser support, include WebP or PNG as a fallback.

JPEG: sensible for photos, risky for interface text
JPEG is universally supported and useful when a screenshot is mostly photographic material and some loss is acceptable. It has no alpha channel. On text-heavy interfaces, thin lines and flat-color controls, lossy compression can soften detail or create artifacts. Do not choose it for a dashboard or documentation capture simply because the file is smaller; check whether the text remains clear at normal display size and at 100% zoom.
SVG and animated formats
If the asset is a logo, icon or geometric diagram, ask whether it should be recreated or exported as vector artwork instead of treated as a screenshot. SVG is resolution-independent, but it is not a practical replacement for a photograph or complex full-page UI capture.
For a static screenshot, GIF is not an appropriate default. If the asset needs motion, consider video or evaluate APNG, WebP and AVIF animation according to the audience and delivery requirements. Animation support and file-size trade-offs differ, so do not infer the best animated format from a static-image comparison.

How to export sharp screenshots without overserving pixels
- Capture for the intended display size. Establish the CSS width at which the image will appear. Create a 2× variant if high-DPI sharpness is needed, rather than sending one enormous image to every device. Doubling display resolution requires four times as many raster pixels.
- Save a lossless PNG master. This preserves the original text and UI edges before you experiment with smaller derivatives.
- Encode a lossless WebP version. Compare both visual fidelity and byte size against the PNG. Published averages are not a substitute for testing your own interface.
- Try AVIF only if the savings justify another variant. Inspect text edges, colors and decode behavior, and retain a WebP, PNG or JPEG fallback for browsers that do not support it.
- Serve alternatives with
<picture>. The browser selects the first listed source it supports and falls through to the image element if necessary. - Add responsive widths. Use
srcsetandsizesso the browser can choose an appropriate raster width for the viewport and device pixel ratio. Set the image’s width and height to reserve layout space. - Inspect at actual reading sizes. Check the screenshot at 100% zoom and at its normal on-page size, paying particular attention to small text and high-contrast colored edges.
Example: AVIF and WebP with a PNG fallback
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="screen.avif">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="screen.webp">
<img src="screen.png" width="1200" height="800" alt="Product dashboard screenshot">
</picture>
This basic pattern offers AVIF first, then WebP, with PNG as the fallback. For responsive variants, provide width descriptors in each source’s srcset and suitable sizes values. Keep the dimensions on the image element aligned with the layout to help avoid a shift as the image loads.
How to keep files small without making text fuzzy
Start by reducing unnecessary pixels: a screenshot captured at a much larger size than its rendered dimensions carries extra data. Then compare lossless WebP with the PNG master. If you consider lossy WebP, JPEG or lossy AVIF, inspect the actual output rather than relying on a universal quality setting. Compression quality depends on the image and the audience’s tolerance for artifacts; no single numeric setting is right for every interface.
At 100% zoom, look for halos, colored fringes, blurred glyphs and broken one-pixel lines. Also inspect at the real on-page size: a file may look acceptable enlarged but fail when small labels are read in context. When the screenshot is evidence, documentation or a reference that must remain exact, prefer a lossless export even if it costs more bytes.

Common format and delivery problems
- Text looks soft although the screenshot is large. The file may have been encoded lossily, resized after capture or captured at too few pixels for its display density. Return to the lossless master, check the capture dimensions and compare again at the intended rendered size.
- An AVIF or WebP image is missing for some visitors. The browser may not support the format. Add a PNG or JPEG fallback in
<picture>, and verify that the fallback URL actually points to a valid asset. - The screenshot is much larger than expected. Check whether it is being served at a width far beyond its rendered size. Create responsive variants and let
srcsetandsizesselect an appropriate one. - A transparent area appears as an opaque background. JPEG does not support alpha transparency. Use PNG, WebP or AVIF when the image needs transparent pixels, and check that any conversion step preserves alpha.
- Small type has colored fringes. This is a common warning sign of lossy compression or chroma subsampling around sharp edges. Re-export as PNG or lossless WebP, or reduce the compression if a lossy copy is necessary.
- The layout jumps when the image arrives. Provide accurate
widthandheightvalues so the browser can reserve space before loading the file.
Cost and performance trade-offs
Format is only one part of delivery cost. Pixel dimensions, responsive selection, compression, caching and the number of variants all affect the amount transferred and the work needed to produce assets. A lossless WebP or AVIF derivative can reduce transfer bytes, but extra variants also add encoding, storage and testing work. Generate only the sizes and formats your audience needs.

web.dev notes that doubling display resolution quadruples raster pixel requirements. That makes a correctly sized image often more valuable than changing formats while continuing to deliver a huge capture. Conversely, do not downscale a screenshot so aggressively that labels become unreadable. Treat file-size comparisons as asset-specific and balance them against whether the screenshot remains useful.
Quick decision guide
- Documentation, dashboard, or text-heavy UI: PNG master; test lossless WebP for delivery.
- Need transparency: PNG, WebP or AVIF; not JPEG.
- Photo-dominated capture with tolerant detail: compare JPEG or lossy WebP/AVIF against the quality requirement.
- Very small delivery and fallback pipeline available: test AVIF, inspect it, and keep a supported fallback.
- Logo, icon or simple diagram: use SVG if the artwork is actually vector-based.
- Motion rather than a static frame: evaluate video or an animated format separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PNG make a screenshot sharper than lossless WebP?
Both are lossless formats, so converting an image does not inherently add detail. The capture dimensions and any resizing or lossy processing determine whether fine text remains sharp.
Can I use AVIF without a PNG fallback?
Only if you have established that every browser and client you support can decode AVIF. Otherwise, provide another source through <picture>.
Should I keep a PNG master if I publish WebP or AVIF?
Keeping a lossless master is useful if you will make new derivatives later, need a dependable archive, or want to compare conversions without repeatedly encoding an already compressed image.
