Choose KeePass if you want an open-source, locally managed password database and are comfortable arranging its storage, synchronization, and backups. Choose LastPass if you prefer a hosted account with integrated autofill and easier access across device types. Neither is automatically more secure: the better fit depends on your threat model and how well you protect your master password, devices, recovery options, and vault.
How KeePass and LastPass differ
The main difference is who manages the vault’s storage and access. KeePass centers on an encrypted database file that you control. LastPass provides an account-based service with a hosted vault and integrated access across supported devices. That distinction affects everyday convenience, setup work, and what you need to manage yourself.
| Question | KeePass | LastPass |
|---|---|---|
| How is the vault managed? | You manage an encrypted database file. | You use an account-based hosted service with an integrated vault. |
| How does synchronization work? | KeePass 2.x can merge database copies; you choose where they are stored and how they are accessed. | LastPass advertises automatic device synchronization. |
| What is the platform approach? | The core program is for Windows; ports for other systems are available and are separate apps. | LastPass describes access through browsers on computers and through mobile device types. |
| What is the subscription model? | The official feature page describes KeePass as open source and does not list a subscription price. Storage or third-party apps may have separate costs. | Free is limited to one device type; Premium offers access across device types. Check the current offer for pricing and eligibility. |

Which is more secure?
The available product documentation does not establish a definitive independent security winner. Both products describe encryption protections, but an algorithm or vendor security statement alone does not determine how safe a particular person’s vault is. Master-password strength, device security, multifactor authentication, recovery choices, and backups all matter.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅ PROTECT ONLINE ACCOUNTS – A password manager, two-factor security key, and secure communication token in one, OnlyKey can keep your accounts safe even if your computer or a website is compromised. OnlyKey is open source, verified, and trustworthy.
- ✅ UNIVERSALLY SUPPORTED – Works with all websites including Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, and Google. Onlykey supports multiple methods of two-factor authentication including FIDO2 / U2F, Yubico OTP, TOTP, Challenge-response.
- ✅ PORTABLE PROTECTION – Extremely durable, waterproof, and tamper resistant design allows you to take your OnlyKey with you everywhere.
- ✅ PIN PROTECTED – The PIN used to unlock OnlyKey is entered directly on it. This means that if this device is stolen, data remains secure, after 10 failed attempts to unlock all data is securely erased.
- ✅ EASY LOG IN –No need to remember multiple passwords because by plugging OnlyKey to your computer, it automatically inputs your username and password. It works with Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or Chromebook, just press a button to login securely!
KeePass encryption and key choices
KeePass documentation says the complete database is encrypted, including usernames, URLs, notes, and passwords. KeePass 1.x supports AES and Twofish; KeePass 2.x supports AES-256 and ChaCha20. A master key can combine a password with a key file, Windows account key, or a plugin-provided key. KeePass also lets users tune key derivation: increasing its work factor makes guessing attempts more costly, but can make opening the database slower. See the KeePass security documentation.
LastPass security statements
LastPass says it uses device-level encryption and that users decrypt their data on trusted devices. Its security page reports that PBKDF2 iterations were increased to 600,000 and describes infrastructure, access-control, audit, and certification work. These are statements published by LastPass, not independent proof that every risk has been eliminated. Review the company’s security information for its account of those measures.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
What neither model removes
A weak or reused master password, an unlocked device compromised by malware, unsafe recovery practices, or a missing backup can undermine either setup. Use a strong, unique master password, secure the devices where you open the vault, enable available multifactor authentication, and keep a recovery and backup process you have tested.

Yes, KeePass 2.x includes a merge-based synchronization feature. It can reconcile changes made in multiple database copies and save the merged data to both locations. The user still chooses the storage and access route: KeePass documentation describes local and network files as well as several URL protocols. For cloud storage, it recommends using local filesystem integration where available. The details are in the KeePass synchronization guide.

- Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
- Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
This flexibility means you decide how the database reaches each device and how it is backed up. It is not the same as signing in to an account that handles synchronization for you. Plan how you will avoid conflicting copies and restore the database if a device or storage location fails.
How do the daily workflows compare?
With KeePass
You open the database file through the core application or a compatible port. KeePass identifies Windows portability and lists ports for other systems, including Android and iOS. A port is not necessarily the same official desktop application: check the specific app’s developer, update history, and synchronization method before entrusting it with your vault. The KeePass features page lists the project’s platform information.

With LastPass
LastPass advertises save and autofill features, automatic device synchronization, and access from browsers on computers and from mobile devices. Its pricing page names computers, phones, smart watches, and tablets when describing device types. Check current compatibility information for a particular operating-system version or device rather than assuming every version is supported.

LastPass’s pricing page describes Free as offering unlimited password storage while limiting use to one device type. Premium offers access across device types, and Families includes six Premium accounts with separate encrypted vaults. These are plan descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature or offer is available in every market.
Best Value

The page’s price fields do not establish a numeric amount here. Before subscribing, check the current price for your country, billing interval, taxes, and promotional eligibility on the LastPass pricing page. KeePass’s cited feature page presents it as open source but does not set a single cost for a complete setup; you may separately pay for storage or third-party apps.
Which one should you choose?
- Pick KeePass if control of an encrypted database file and open-source software matter more to you than a ready-made hosted workflow, and you are prepared to manage storage, synchronization, app selection, and backups.
- Pick LastPass if integrated autofill and account-based access across device types matter more than managing the vault file yourself, and its current plans meet your needs.
- Pause before choosing if you do not yet have a strong master password, secure devices, multifactor authentication, or a recovery plan. Those safeguards matter whichever product you use.
LastPass lists hardware multifactor authentication options such as YubiKey for Premium. A physical key is optional; check that your plan and account support the specific key before relying on it. KeePass key options vary with the core program, plugins, and ports, so verify the exact implementation you plan to use.
