The best printer ink for heat transfer depends on the printer and the material you’re decorating. For polyester or polymer-coated items in a Sawgrass SG500 or SG1000 workflow, Sawgrass identifies SubliJet UHD; cotton and dark garments require different systems, such as printable heat-transfer vinyl or a dedicated cotton-transfer ink. No independent comparison here establishes one ink as the universal quality winner.
Start with the material and transfer method
Conventional sublimation is suited to polyester fabric and polymer-coated goods in the Sawgrass workflows described by the manufacturer. It is not the same process as printing onto transfer vinyl and then applying that vinyl to a garment. Cotton, dark fabrics, and other surfaces therefore call for a system designed for that specific route rather than a generic “heat-transfer ink.”
Choose in this order: identify the substrate and its color, select a compatible transfer method and media, then confirm that the ink is intended for your exact printer. Ink cannot be judged separately from the paper or printable vinyl, blank, and settings used to transfer the design.

Match the ink to the printer you own
Before buying ink, check the printer model and the manufacturer’s supported ink set. Sawgrass lists SubliJet UHD for SG500 and SG1000 printers and says its printers are designed for Sawgrass inks. That compatibility guidance does not establish that the ink will work in a generic inkjet, or that another printer can use it safely.

Sawgrass advises keeping the same ink type throughout a printer’s life. Its guidance is specific to its equipment, but it is a useful reason not to casually mix ink families or switch systems without following the printer and ink manufacturers’ conversion instructions. Sawgrass also warns that non-Sawgrass inks could affect warranty coverage on its printers; check the current warranty terms for your model before changing inks. Choose transfer paper or printable vinyl as part of the system
Transfer media is not interchangeable by default. Sawgrass describes sublimation paper as specially coated, and its guidance distinguishes paper settings from the EasySubli printable-HTV process. - For conventional sublimation, confirm the paper is intended for your printer and ink and that the blank is polyester or has a suitable polymer coating.
- For a cotton or dark garment using printable HTV, follow the vinyl maker’s requirements for printing and application rather than treating the job like direct sublimation.
- For cotton-specific ink systems, use the transfer paper and substrate limits specified for that ink.
What “best quality” can—and cannot—mean here
Manufacturer compatibility guidance can identify a suitable ink-and-media workflow, but it cannot establish which ink produces the best-looking result across all printers and substrates. A fair quality comparison would need to hold the printer, media, substrate, artwork, and settings constant. The cited product descriptions are not an independent head-to-head test, so terms such as “vibrant” or “photo-quality” should not be read as measured superiority.

For practical results, follow the ink and media makers’ settings for the specific blank and run a small transfer on the intended material before committing a larger garment or batch. Check the finished transfer for the details that matter to the job—color, edge definition, coverage, and adhesion—rather than assuming one ink label predicts performance on every surface.

Practical recommendation
- For an SG500 or SG1000 decorating polyester or polymer-coated blanks: SubliJet UHD is the Sawgrass-named fit; verify the blank and sublimation paper are appropriate.
- For cotton or dark garments: choose a specifically supported cotton-transfer or printable-HTV workflow, such as the distinct VersiFlex, Chromablast, or EasySubli routes described above, and respect each system’s substrate limits.
- For production-scale sublimation: consider equipment designed for that format, such as Epson’s SureColor F9470H, while following its genuine-ink guidance.
