Choose a Seagate external hard drive by matching its exact model to your setup: portable models suit moving files between locations, while desktop models are intended for a stationary storage setup. For a shortlist, consider the Expansion Portable, One Touch Portable, Expansion Desktop, and One Touch desktop families—but verify the model number, host port, power needs, Mac setup, and regional warranty before buying. Seagate’s published specifications identify products; they do not establish which is fastest or most reliable.
How to choose a Seagate external hard drive
- Decide where it will live. A portable drive is the more natural fit for carrying between a desk and another location. A desktop drive is better suited to staying connected in one place.
- Match capacity to the job. Select a capacity that fits the files you intend to store, and check the exact SKU: specifications can differ within a product family.
- Check the connection and power. Confirm that your computer has the required data port and, for models that need it, sufficient power delivery.
- Plan for your operating system. Confirm compatibility for your specific hardware and operating-system version. If using Time Machine, check whether the drive needs reformatting.
- Check local warranty terms. Warranty periods in US support listings are not a promise of the same coverage in every region.
Seagate’s Expansion Portable support page and Expansion Desktop support page identify models and documentation. The One Touch desktop product page and One Touch HDD support page provide additional model-specific details.
11 Seagate external hard drive options to consider
These are model families or documented configurations, not a performance ranking. The official information available supports the use-case distinctions below, but does not provide independent speed, noise, or reliability comparisons. Check the exact SKU and current local listing before purchase.

Consider the Expansion Portable family if you want storage you can move between locations. Seagate’s US support page lists model-specific documentation and a one-year limited warranty for the models shown there. Physical dimensions and weight vary by capacity class in Seagate’s older datasheet, so do not assume all current capacities have identical dimensions.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Expansion Portable at a lower capacity class: for lighter carry needs
If you need room for a more modest collection of documents, photos, or other files, compare the lower-capacity Expansion Portable configurations. Seagate’s datasheet lists different physical details across capacity classes; check the current model documentation rather than using a family-wide size or weight estimate.
3. Expansion Portable at a higher capacity class: when capacity matters more
For a larger portable archive, compare the higher-capacity configurations in the Expansion Portable family. In the configurations covered by Seagate’s datasheet, the higher-capacity group is thicker and heavier. The datasheet also states that USB 3.0 is needed for USB 3.0 transfer speeds and that USB 2.0 is supported at USB 2.0 speeds.
4. One Touch Portable: a portable family with model-specific listings
One Touch Portable is another family to consider if you want a drive for mobile storage. Seagate’s US support page includes a 5TB Space Grey listing, model STKC5000601, and lists a two-year limited warranty for that drive. Confirm that the exact model and finish are currently available where you live and that the listing matches the specifications you need.

5. One Touch Portable 5TB, Space Grey (STKC5000601): a specific documented configuration
This is the clearest capacity-and-model example among the portable One Touch listings: Seagate’s US support page identifies the 5TB Space Grey model as STKC5000601. Treat its listed two-year limited warranty as a US listing detail, not a guarantee of identical regional terms.

6. Expansion Desktop: for storage that stays at your desk
Choose the Expansion Desktop family when a stationary setup makes more sense than carrying the drive around. Seagate’s US support page lists desktop models at multiple capacities, with examples specifying USB 3.0 and a one-year limited warranty. Check the chosen capacity and model documentation for its own details.
7. Expansion Desktop at a capacity suited to your archive
Expansion Desktop models are listed at multiple capacities, making the family worth considering for a desk-based archive or backup target. The available official information does not establish a single recommended capacity for every user; size the drive to your files and leave room for growth rather than assuming a particular model is universally best.
8. One Touch desktop 8TB (STNB8000400): for a desk setup with USB-C power requirements
The documented One Touch desktop configuration is model STNB8000400 with an 8TB stated capacity. Seagate lists dimensions of 186.80 × 40.30 × 131.70 mm and a weight of 1,124 g. This specific model requires a USB-C port with 15W or higher power delivery and a USB-C data cable, so check the computer’s port specifications before choosing it.
9. One Touch desktop for a Windows setup
Seagate says the referenced 8TB One Touch desktop works with most Windows systems, while noting compatibility can vary with hardware configuration and operating system. Use the page for model STNB8000400 as the reference point and verify your Windows computer’s port and power capabilities.
Rank #3
- Easy-to-use desktop hard drive—simply plug in the power adapter and USB cable
- Fast file transfers with USB 3.3
- Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box
- Automatic recognition of Windows and Mac computers for simple setup (Reformatting required for use with Time Machine)
- Enjoy peace of mind with the included limited warranty and Rescue Data Recovery Services
10. One Touch desktop for a Mac setup
Seagate says the referenced 8TB One Touch desktop works with most macOS systems, subject to hardware and operating-system variation. Its product page says reformatting is required for Time Machine. If you plan to use Time Machine, account for that setup step and verify the precise model’s instructions before putting data on the drive.
11. One Touch desktop when a two-year listed warranty is a priority
The One Touch desktop page for STNB8000400 states a two-year limited warranty. Compare that with the one-year terms on the cited US Expansion pages only after checking the exact product and your region; warranty coverage depends on the model and local terms.

Will a Seagate external drive work with a Mac?
Compatibility depends on the particular model, Mac hardware, and macOS version. For the referenced One Touch desktop 8TB model, Seagate says it works with most macOS systems but warns that compatibility can vary. The same product page says reformatting is required for Time Machine. Check the product’s current instructions before formatting: reformatting affects how the drive is set up and may erase data already stored on it.
Does a Seagate external hard drive need external power?
Requirements vary by model. The documented One Touch desktop 8TB model, STNB8000400, requires a USB-C port providing at least 15W of power delivery as well as a USB-C data cable. That specific requirement should not be generalized to Expansion Portable, Expansion Desktop, or other One Touch models; check the exact model’s specifications and included accessories.
What the published specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Seagate’s product and support pages help identify model families, stated capacities, connections, setup notes, and warranty terms. They do not establish a universal best choice or provide a comparative basis here for claims about measured speed, failure rates, noise, or long-term reliability. Choose by verified fit for your setup, not an unsupported performance or reliability ranking.
