A backpack marketed for a 17-inch laptop is not guaranteed to fit yours. Measure the laptop’s outside width, height, and thickness, then compare those dimensions with the manufacturer’s laptop-compartment measurements. Among the options below, published dimensions, capacity, weight, and organization vary; the specifications are manufacturer claims, not independent fit, durability, or comfort test results.
How to check whether a backpack fits your laptop
- Measure the laptop itself. Record its maximum outside width, height, and thickness, including any protruding parts. A screen-size label alone does not establish the size of the laptop’s body.
- Compare those measurements with the compartment. Check all three dimensions where available. A close fit can depend on how the maker defines width and height, as well as the laptop’s corner shape; confirm the orientation with the manufacturer if necessary.
- Allow for real-world insertion. A device that is nominally close to a compartment’s measurements may be difficult to insert or remove. Do not assume an advertised “up to 17 inches” label settles the question.
- Check the exact model and current listing. Product specifications, listings, and availability can change. Confirm the dimensions for the specific backpack version before buying.
The published fit information is not consistent in how it is presented: Case Logic gives three compartment dimensions, Targus gives two, and WaterField gives a maximum device size for its padded sleeve. Those figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable without checking the makers’ measurement conventions.

Which option may suit your carrying needs?
For a lighter listed bag with a three-dimension compartment measurement
Case Logic publishes both a 1.23-pound weight and a compartment depth, alongside width and height. Its 25.2-liter capacity is lower than the 30-liter figures listed for Targus and WaterField, which may matter if you carry several devices or accessories. Check your laptop’s measurements against the compartment before treating the 17-inch marketing label as a fit guarantee.

For more listed volume and everyday accessory storage
Targus lists a 30-liter capacity, a 1.54-pound weight, dual bottle holders, accessory organization, and a foam-padded laptop compartment. Its published compartment measurement has two dimensions rather than three, so it does not establish the laptop’s allowable thickness. Verify that dimension with the seller or maker if your device is thick or close to the listed limits.
For a separate tech folio and device sleeves
WaterField describes a 30-liter bag with a separate tech folio, a second padded sleeve for a laptop or tablet up to 13 inches, a sternum strap, and a suitcase pass-through. The maker specifies maximum device dimensions for the built-in sleeve. Its listed empty weight differs by material: 3.5 pounds for ballistic nylon and 4 pounds for waxed canvas.

For travel-oriented organization with a 17.3-inch product name
HP’s Professional model includes a tracking pocket, organization pockets, a suitcase pass-through, and RFID-blocking and lockable zippers in HP’s product description. The reviewed store page does not provide sleeve dimensions, so the 17.3-inch name is not enough to verify fit for a particular laptop.

Choose using more than the laptop label
Once fit is established, weigh the rest of your load and how you travel. Capacity can help when carrying chargers, a tablet, and other electronics, but a larger volume does not by itself mean better padding or more comfortable carrying. Empty weights and capacities above are published specifications, not comparable wear or comfort tests.
- Device protection: Look for a dedicated padded compartment or sleeve. The product descriptions differ in how much fit detail they publish, so compare those details with your device.
- Organization: Consider whether you want accessory pockets, a separate folio, a tablet sleeve, or quick-access storage rather than simply more total volume.
- Travel features: A luggage pass-through or strap can be useful when attaching a backpack to a suitcase; bottle holders and a sternum strap address different carry needs.
- Material and weight: Use the stated material and empty weight as selection details, not as proof of real-world durability or comfort.
