Trend Micro reported two cyberespionage campaigns, tracked as Venom and Tidrone, that used compromised software vendors and service providers to reach organizations connected to the drone and defense supply chain. The activity spanned 2023–2024 and included targets in Taiwan and South Korea. Researchers assess the Earth Ammit cluster as China-linked, but public reporting does not establish that it was definitively directed by the Chinese government.
What happened in the reported attacks?
Trend Micro described two campaigns attributed to the Earth Ammit cluster. Rather than relying only on direct attacks against downstream organizations, the activity exploited trusted relationships with upstream vendors and service providers. Access to a provider could create a route into customer environments that rely on its software, systems, or administration.
The reporting covers organizations across the technology and drone-related supply chain, not just drone makers. Sectors mentioned include military, satellite, heavy industry, media, technology, software services, healthcare, and payment services. A complete public list of affected organizations is not available, and the reports do not establish that every organization in any of these sectors was affected.

| Campaign | Reported timing | Target emphasis | Reported approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venom | 2023 to early 2024 | Upstream software vendors and technology service providers, including organizations in Taiwan and South Korea | Web-server vulnerability exploitation, web shells, proxy and remote-access tools, and credential theft that could enable access to downstream customers |
| Tidrone | Observed in 2024 | More direct focus on military- and satellite-related organizations in Taiwan | Compromised service-provider access and ERP software used to inject or distribute malware into customer environments |
These are differences in the campaigns as researchers described them; they do not prove that the operations had entirely separate operators or objectives.

What tools and techniques did researchers report?
The reporting names VENFRPC, a customized version of the open-source Fast Reverse Proxy client. For Tidrone, it identifies the CXCLNT and CLNTEND backdoors. Researchers also described Screencap, a screen-capture tool, alongside techniques including credential dumping, privilege escalation, persistence, disabling security protections, and information collection. These are reported campaign capabilities, not proof that every technique was used against every victim.
The described consequences include cyberespionage and possible theft of credentials and screenshots. The public reporting cited here does not establish physical sabotage of drones, disruption to a particular fleet, a confirmed set of stolen secrets, or a global impact assessment.

Is Earth Ammit definitively linked to the Chinese government?
No. Trend Micro assesses Earth Ammit as China-linked, while contemporaneous coverage describes the connection as suspected or believed. The Record reports that researchers associated Venom and Tidrone through shared command-and-control infrastructure and recurring victim targeting, but notes that definitive affiliation remained unclear. This is a researcher attribution, not public proof of Chinese government direction.

The reporting also does not settle the actors’ specific objective in collecting information from drone-related and other organizations. Cyberespionage and information collection are described behaviors; claims that the operation sought particular military secrets, intellectual property, or a defined strategic outcome would exceed what the cited reporting establishes.

What does this mean for organizations in supplier networks?
The case illustrates that a supplier relationship can become a security boundary: an intrusion at a software vendor or service provider may put customers at risk through trusted access or software distribution. The following are general risk-management measures, not controls shown to have stopped these specific campaigns:
