China remains Apple’s established iPhone manufacturing base; India is an expanding complement, not a demonstrated replacement. The available public evidence does not establish which country currently has the lower all-in cost per iPhone, higher yield or more usable production capacity. One reported estimate says duties and the shipping and storage of Chinese components add about 10% to manufacturing costs in India, but that is not a like-for-like verdict on total cost.

Is it cheaper to make iPhones in China or India?

There is no publicly established, current comparison of total per-unit iPhone manufacturing costs in the two countries. A wage-only comparison would miss factors such as imported components, logistics, supplier capability, productivity, yield, capital costs and incentives. Without comparable figures for those inputs, it is not possible to say reliably that one country makes an iPhone cheaper overall.

The most specific cost estimate in the available reporting comes from The Information’s account of Apple’s search for an Indian supply chain. People familiar with the matter told the publication that customs duties and the cost of shipping and storing components from China together add about 10% to manufacturing costs in India. This is an attributed estimate, not a figure Apple has published or an audited comparison. It describes those added costs; it does not mean Indian-made iPhones cost 10% more overall than Chinese-made ones.

How do China and India compare for iPhone production?

Factor China India
Production footprint Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location (Apple, “Supply Chain Innovation”). Reporting describes an expanding Apple manufacturing base; the available evidence does not establish that India has replaced China’s established footprint (The Information, “Inside Apple’s Search for an Indian Supply Chain”).
Supplier ecosystem Established production ecosystem and manufacturing practices. Scaling supplier base, with reported challenges in reproducing established practices and subassembly capability (The Information, “Inside Apple’s Search for an Indian Supply Chain”).
Component logistics The cited reporting does not provide a comparable all-in logistics figure for China. The Information’s estimate attributes about 10% of Indian manufacturing costs to duties and shipping and storage of components from China; it is not a total-cost comparison.
Current unit cost, yield and usable capacity Not established by comparable public figures in the cited sources. Not established by comparable public figures in the cited sources.
Strategic role Established production base. Expanding location that can diversify production alongside China.

Why the supplier ecosystem matters as much as final assembly

An iPhone production base is more than the factory that performs final assembly. Component suppliers, subassembly lines, logistics and the ability to transfer established manufacturing practices all affect how reliably a new production site can scale. Reporting on India describes both supplier growth and challenges in replicating capabilities already established in China.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple says it uses supplier standards and risk-review processes in managing its supply chain. That context matters when considering expansion: adding a location involves qualifying suppliers and managing production risk, not simply moving an assembly line. The available sources do not quantify how much these requirements add to costs or how quickly any particular capability can be duplicated.

What do production plans and export figures show?

In an October 29, 2024 report, The Information said Apple had tapped India to build a new iPhone model from the ground up. The report discussed planned iPhone 17 production and replication at a China site. It is evidence of planning at that time—not an audited current allocation, proof that every variant is made in both countries, or a measure of present-day capacity.

The Indian Express reported that India’s smartphone exports were around $15 billion in 2023–24, with iPhones contributing about 65%, or around $10 billion. Those are period-specific export values. They show the scale of reported exports, not installed factory capacity, production yield or Apple’s total global output.

India’s production-linked incentives and investment in supplier infrastructure are part of the country’s smartphone manufacturing expansion, as The Indian Express described. They help explain why India is attracting production, but they do not establish a specific current cost advantage over China.

Can India replace China as Apple’s iPhone manufacturing hub?

The evidence supports a more limited conclusion: India is becoming a meaningful diversification location while China remains an established base. The reported model-planning work and export growth indicate expansion, but neither proves that India has matched China’s supplier depth or can absorb China’s production at a known scale.

Diversification can reduce reliance on a single production geography, while introducing its own dependencies and costs. In the reported Indian supply chain, importing components from China creates duties and logistics expense. The sources do not quantify the overall resilience benefit or provide a current, comparable measure of each country’s contribution.

What the public evidence can—and cannot—tell you

  • Supported: Apple identifies mainland China as an iPhone assembly location; reporting describes India as an expanding manufacturing base.
  • Supported with qualification: The Information reported an estimate of about 10% in added Indian manufacturing costs from duties and shipping and storage of Chinese components. It is attributed to people familiar with the matter and is not a total-cost comparison.
  • Not established: Current, like-for-like country-level unit costs, yields, usable capacity or definitive model-by-model production allocations.
  • Do not treat as interchangeable: Production plans, export values and incentive programs are evidence of expansion, not direct measures of factory capacity or proof of lower per-unit cost.
