There is no single best internet provider for every Chicago address. Check whether AT&T Fiber, Xfinity, Astound, or address-eligible 5G home internet is available at your exact location, then compare the full bill, connection type, upload speed, and service terms. Building wiring can narrow the options even when a provider serves nearby streets.

Which internet providers are worth checking in Chicago?

Start with AT&T Fiber, Xfinity, and Astound, then check T-Mobile and Verizon 5G Home Internet if you want a fixed-wireless alternative. The FCC National Broadband Map can provide an initial address-level view of providers, technologies, and reported speeds; confirm eligibility on the provider’s own site because map data is reported by ISPs and can be challenged if inaccurate. The FCC explains what the map shows in its National Broadband Map guide.

Citywide availability and maximum speeds are context, not promises about an individual building or household. Broadband Map figures below use FCC Broadband Data Collection data available as of December 2025; the comparison was published in May 2026 and revised through July 2026. The source warns that geographic estimates and advertised maximums may be overoptimistic.

Provider and connection Chicago-area figures What to know
AT&T Fiber Up to 5,000/5,000 Mbps; estimated fiber availability 74% of city census area. Symmetrical tiers where fiber is available; the city estimate does not establish service at your address.
Xfinity cable Up to 2,000/2,000 Mbps; estimated availability 100%. Map estimates and maximum advertised speeds may be overoptimistic; confirm the address-specific offer.
Astound Fiber Up to 1,500/1,500 Mbps; estimated availability 33%. Fiber is available in select neighborhoods.
Astound cable Up to 1,500/50 Mbps; estimated availability 57%. Cable upload capacity differs substantially from the listed fiber maximum.
Verizon 5G Home Up to 1,000/75 Mbps; estimated availability 99%. Provider-reported area maximum and estimate, not a household speed test or indoor-signal guarantee.
T-Mobile 5G Home Up to 498/55 Mbps; estimated availability 100%. Provider-reported area maximum and estimate; capacity and congestion can affect speeds.

These figures are from Broadband Map’s Chicago provider comparison. Its percentages describe estimated city coverage, not the share of buildings that can order a specific plan. A separate September 2026 comparison by FindBetterInternet, which attributes coverage to FCC filings, lists AT&T Fiber up to 5,000 Mbps and Xfinity cable up to 2,000 Mbps; its ranking is secondary analysis, not an official recommendation. See its Chicago comparison.

How do the main wired providers compare?

AT&T Fiber: consider it where available, especially for uploads

AT&T’s Chicago page lists Fiber 300 at $35 per month, Fiber 500 at $50 per month, and Fiber 1000 at $50 per month, with equal advertised download and upload speeds. The page says speeds can reach 5 Gbps where available. These are listed offer prices, not guaranteed final bills: eligibility, offer terms, taxes, discounts, autopay, and paperless billing affect advertised amounts. Fiber availability is not universal across Chicago. Check the address-specific terms on AT&T’s Chicago internet page.

Xfinity: a broad cable option with offer details to verify

Xfinity’s Chicago page advertises a 300 Mbps offer with a five-year price guarantee and shows promotional/everyday prices of $40/$75 for 300 Mbps and $45/$85 for 500 Mbps. The page presents differing offer details in different sections, so use the checkout quote for your address rather than assuming a displayed price applies to you. The five-year guarantee is for qualifying new customers and has autopay, billing, installation, tax, fee, and availability conditions. Xfinity’s citywide maximum of up to 2 Gbps is not a guarantee for an individual address. See Xfinity’s Chicago offers.

Astound: compare its local network and bundle requirements

Astound says Chicago plans start at $30 per month for 300 Mbps. It advertises fiber-powered service in select neighborhoods, including some parts of the North Side, Loop, West Loop, and Near South Side. The company also advertises 1 Gig or higher bundled with an unlimited mobile line and an eero mesh Wi-Fi system. Eligibility, price, and bundle terms depend on address and offer; check what equipment is included and whether the mobile line is required. Details are on Astound’s Chicago internet page.

When is 5G home internet a good alternative?

T-Mobile and Verizon offer fixed wireless only to eligible addresses. It can be useful when wired choices are limited or when the quoted terms suit your household, but a citywide coverage estimate does not predict signal inside your home or your actual speeds. Capacity and congestion can affect T-Mobile service. Its gateway combines modem and router functions. Verizon says its router is included, remains Verizon property, and must be returned under the applicable conditions when service ends. Check current eligibility, plan terms, network management or prioritization details, gateway placement, and equipment-return requirements directly with T-Mobile and Verizon.

How to choose a plan for your household

  1. Check the exact service address. Search it in the FCC National Broadband Map, then repeat the check with each provider. Ask the building manager which providers can install service if the address checker is unclear; wiring or building arrangements can limit choice.
  2. Compare connection type and uploads. Fiber’s listed tiers may be symmetrical, while cable and fixed wireless have different upload figures and performance conditions. Upload capacity matters for frequent large-file transfers, backups, and video calls.
  3. Get the full price and terms in writing before ordering. Compare the recurring price after introductory offers, required discounts, autopay, taxes, fees, installation, equipment, price-guarantee duration, contract or cancellation terms, and data policy. A headline monthly rate alone is not the total cost.
  4. Match speed to simultaneous use. Consider how many people will work, make calls, stream, game, and upload at the same time. Choose for those activities rather than selecting the largest advertised number by default.
  5. Check the in-home Wi-Fi separately. Confirm whether the provider’s gateway or included bundle covers your home. Mesh Wi-Fi may help distribute a connection across rooms, but it is not required to buy internet and does not increase the underlying connection speed from the ISP.
  6. For fixed wireless, verify conditions that vary by home. Confirm eligibility and capacity, ask how congestion or prioritization can affect service, and check where the gateway should be placed. Review equipment return terms before starting service.

What is not established by citywide figures?

The listed maximums are not named independent Chicago-wide speed-test results. They do not establish what a household will experience at a particular address, at peak times, or over Wi-Fi. Provider availability estimates also do not establish that every unit in a covered area is serviceable. Use the figures to identify providers worth checking, then rely on the address-specific quote and service terms for your decision.
