Cheerio is generally faster when the HTML you need is already available: it parses markup without launching a browser or running the page’s JavaScript. Puppeteer takes more setup and browser work, but it can execute JavaScript and interact with a page to reach content that Cheerio cannot get from the initial HTML alone. The useful choice is therefore based on where the data comes from, not a universal speed ratio.
Is Cheerio faster than Puppeteer?
For parsing static HTML you already have, Cheerio usually does less work. It loads markup and offers a jQuery-like API for selecting and manipulating it; it does not render a page, load external resources, or execute that page’s scripts. The Cheerio documentation describes this absence of browser work as the reason it is much faster than browser-based tools: Cheerio’s introduction.
Puppeteer controls a real browser. The browser can execute scripts and expose the page state after client-side rendering or interaction. That capability comes with browser setup and execution overhead, but it may be the only way to obtain the content required. The Puppeteer project describes its library as a high-level API for controlling Chrome or Firefox: Puppeteer documentation.
There is no reliable universal ratio to quote. A meaningful benchmark would need to compare the same pages, network conditions, extracted result, software versions, concurrency, and machine. If one tool is parsing a server response while the other is loading and rendering a page, that is not an apples-to-apples comparison.

What each tool sees
| Question | Cheerio | Puppeteer |
|---|---|---|
| What does it operate on? | HTML or XML markup supplied to it. | A page controlled through browser automation. |
| Does it run page JavaScript? | No. It does not render or execute the page. | Yes. The browser can run scripts and expose the resulting page state. |
| Can it click or scroll a page? | No browser interaction. | Yes, when your automation requires those actions. |
| Best fit | The target data is already present in the response markup. | The target data appears after client-side rendering or a browser action. |
That distinction matters more than the libraries’ names. If your server response contains the product titles you want, parsing that response is simpler than launching a browser. If the response is only an app shell and JavaScript later fetches and renders those titles, Cheerio cannot create the missing content by itself.
When should you use Cheerio instead of Puppeteer?
Choose Cheerio when you can obtain the relevant markup directly and only need to inspect or transform it. A practical decision flow is:
- Fetch the page using a method appropriate for your project and permitted by the site.
- Inspect the received HTML for the exact target data, not just the page title or app-shell elements.
- If the data is present, parse it with Cheerio. Its loading APIs support strings, buffers, streams, and URLs; see the Cheerio loading guide.
- If the data appears only after JavaScript runs, or requires a click, scroll, or browser state, use Puppeteer or another browser automation tool.
- If parsing speed is important, compare Cheerio’s parser options against your actual markup and correctness requirements.
“Faster” should not mean “always choose Cheerio.” It means avoiding browser work when browser capabilities are unnecessary. If the task requires rendered content, a faster parser that cannot see the content does not solve the task.
Does Cheerio run JavaScript?
No. Cheerio parses the markup it receives; it is not a web browser. It will not run scripts that populate an empty application shell, wait for an API response, or produce a post-interaction state. For a JavaScript-rendered page, the Cheerio troubleshooting documentation recommends recognizing that the initial HTML may not contain the desired data: Cheerio troubleshooting.

Some sites render the content on the server and then add client-side behavior. Check the actual response body first. The presence of JavaScript files or a modern framework alone does not prove the target data is missing from the HTML.

Why is my Cheerio selection empty?
An empty selection usually means the markup Cheerio received does not contain an element matching your selector. It does not automatically mean the selector syntax is wrong. Diagnose in this order:
- Inspect the input: log or save the exact response body passed to Cheerio. Confirm it contains the expected text or element.
- Check for an app shell: if the response has a mostly empty root container and scripts, the page may populate the content after JavaScript executes.
- Verify the selector against that markup: selectors should match the received document, not only the rendered page seen in a browser’s developer tools.
- Check whether the site requires state: authentication, a click, scrolling, or a client-side request can change what appears after initial load.
- Choose the matching tool: stay with Cheerio if the target data exists in the response; use a browser automation tool if browser execution or interaction is needed.
Cheerio’s loading documentation also warns readers to consult its security guidance before using a URL supplied by an untrusted user. Do not turn arbitrary user input into server-side URL fetches without considering the security implications.
How much setup does each tool need?
Cheerio
Cheerio is a Node.js package that accepts markup or can load it through documented helpers. It does not need a browser installation for ordinary parsing. The current loading guide documents methods such as load for strings, loadBuffer for bytes with unknown encoding, streaming methods, and fromURL. Choose the input method that fits how your application already receives HTML.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a small example, install Cheerio in a Node project and parse a known HTML string:
import * as cheerio from 'cheerio';
const html = '<ul><li class="item">First</li><li class="item">Second</li></ul>';
const $ = cheerio.load(html);
const items = $('.item').map((_, element) => $(element).text()).get();
console.log(items); // [ 'First', 'Second' ]
This demonstrates parsing supplied markup only; it does not fetch a website or execute its scripts.

Puppeteer
The full puppeteer package installs a compatible browser, while puppeteer-core is intended for a remote browser or a browser you manage separately. The project’s installation guide gives approximate Chrome for Testing download sizes of 170 MB on macOS, 282 MB on Linux, and 280 MB on Windows. Those are browser download sizes, not runtime RAM measurements or performance benchmarks: Puppeteer installation guide.
A minimal browser automation example using the full package is:

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const title = await page.title();
console.log(title);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
For a real extraction task, wait for a specific element or condition that indicates the desired data is present rather than assuming navigation completion means all application data has loaded. Close browser instances reliably, especially in servers that process repeated jobs.
Can Cheerio be made faster?
Cheerio uses parse5 as its default HTML parser. Its configuration guide says htmlparser2 is faster and uses less memory, and notes it as an option for performance-critical cases. It is a parser choice, not a way to add browser rendering or JavaScript execution: Cheerio configuration guide.
Before changing parsers, confirm that the output and parsing behavior meet your needs. The fastest parser is not useful if it changes how your application handles malformed or unusual markup. Benchmark with representative pages and validate extracted values, not just elapsed time.

How to compare performance fairly
If exact latency or throughput matters to your application, measure your own workload. Keep the comparison aligned:

- Use the same target pages and network conditions.
- Measure the same desired output, not merely page load for one tool and parsing for the other.
- Record library and browser versions, machine details, concurrency, and cache state.
- Separate network time from parsing or browser execution time where possible.
- Include representative failures and slow pages, and repeat enough runs to avoid treating one unusually fast result as typical.
- Check memory and correctness alongside elapsed time if those affect deployment decisions.
A current comparison guide explicitly distinguishes a behavior example from a speed or memory test; it does not establish a controlled head-to-head figure. Avoid presenting an unmeasured percentage or millisecond claim as a general result.

Puppeteer installs, but no browser is available
The browser download may have been skipped because the package manager blocked install scripts, or your deployment environment may not preserve the downloaded browser. Follow Puppeteer’s installation instructions to install or configure the browser explicitly, and use puppeteer-core only when you are intentionally managing or connecting to a browser yourself.
A Puppeteer page never reaches the expected content
Navigation completion and application readiness are different conditions. Wait for a selector or another task-specific signal, and account for pages whose content depends on interaction or state. Set sensible timeouts and handle failures so a stalled page does not leave a browser process running.
The result differs between tools
First verify that both workflows are extracting equivalent states. Cheerio sees only its supplied markup; Puppeteer may see a later rendered page. Also verify the selector against the exact document each tool processes.

A URL loader or automated browser fails on some sites
Sites can respond differently depending on request state, access requirements, or network conditions. Check the response and browser errors rather than assuming that changing the parser will solve a fetch or access problem. Use only access methods appropriate for the target site.
Which should you choose?
- Use Cheerio when the data is already in received HTML/XML and your task is parsing.
- Use Puppeteer when the target state depends on page JavaScript, browser rendering, or interaction.
- Benchmark your real workload if you need a numeric performance answer; there is no supported universal speed ratio.

Does Puppeteer replace Cheerio?
No. Puppeteer automates a browser; Cheerio parses supplied markup. They overlap only when the rendered browser page is being used to obtain HTML that is then parsed.
Can Cheerio scrape every website?
No. Cheerio can extract only from markup it receives. If the target content is absent from that markup or depends on browser execution, Cheerio alone cannot obtain it.
