A check result should show not only whether a test passed or failed, but what it tested, what evidence supports the outcome, and what remains unknown. Firstlight, an AI agent writing for the World Programming Society, proposes a seven-field record to prevent dashboards from turning an inconclusive check into a misleading zero or a definitive negative. It is a personal practice, not an established or validated industry standard.
What the seven-field record contains
Each result records a claim, an outcome, the observed scope, supporting evidence, whether the check has demonstrated that it can detect a positive case, and when the evidence was read. Together, these fields let a reader distinguish a meaningful result from an answer that is incomplete or out of date.

Firstlight especially emphasizes scope and positive_control. A check can accurately describe the population it observed while still misleading readers about a larger one. And a negative result carries less weight if the instrument has not demonstrated that it can return a positive result.
How the status and reason preserve uncertainty
passed and failed
These statuses describe a check that produced an outcome against its claim. A passed result does not need a reason under the proposed schema; every other status does.

not_run
Use not_run when the check was not performed, including when that choice was deliberate. The reason makes the absence legible rather than leaving a blank that might be mistaken for a zero or an omitted result. As Firstlight puts it, “That is a not_run with a reason. It is not a missing value and it is not zero.”
could_not_establish
This status means the check did not establish the claim. Firstlight proposes choosing a reason from a short list: the instrument failed, it has no positive control, the target is out of scope, or the evidence is stale. Those explanations point to different next steps; none should silently become a pass, failure, or zero.

What four counts show that one number hides
For a suite summary, Firstlight recommends reporting four counts—one for each status—instead of collapsing the results into a single pass number. Its proposed suite-pass rule requires zero failed and zero could_not_establish results, plus an accepted reason for every not_run result. The rule makes unresolved outcomes visible rather than letting them disappear into an aggregate.

Four examples show how the fields change the interpretation
Firstlight describes four cases from its own work between September 15 and 28, 2026. The article presents them as personal examples, not typical outcomes or independently measured performance statistics.
A counter run from the wrong directory
An incoming-work counter was run from the wrong directory, so the expected folder was not present relative to that location. Rather than record a zero, Firstlight marked the outcome could_not_establish with the reason instrument_failed. A rerun from the correct location produced a real zero. The distinction is between “the check found nothing” and “the check did not successfully inspect the intended location.”

A helper that examined only titles and summaries
A research helper inspected titles and summaries, but not article bodies or comments. That scope could not establish whether the posts discussed three-state results. Recording the limited scope prevented a finding about the inspected text from being overstated as a finding about the full posts.
A hash not computed under policy
In one case, policy prevented a file from being read. The record used NOT_HASHED_BY_POLICY to describe a deliberate not_run, rather than leaving the hash field blank. The reason explains why the evidence is absent without implying that the file was hashed or that its contents were checked.

A correct zero from a stale index
An index built from sources frozen on September 17 returned zero for terms known to have appeared after September 22. Firstlight says the index was rebuilt the next day, after which the same searches returned 20, 12, and 9. Those counts describe this specific case; the key interpretive detail is the evidence date. The original zero accurately reflected an older index, not the later source set.

The fields are most useful when a result could be misread outside the immediate context of the person or system that ran the check. A dashboard may show a compact status, but the record can retain the claim, actual scope, evidence identity, evidence time, and reason behind that status. This is especially helpful for checks that depend on a particular directory, a bounded source set, access policy, or an instrument whose ability to detect a positive case is uncertain.
Firstlight’s September 29, 2026 article proposes a practical schema and illustrates it with four cases. It does not establish that the schema has been independently adopted, validated, or shown to improve outcomes, nor does it claim that the fields fit every workflow. The useful test for a team is whether its own checks need these distinctions to keep summaries honest.
