The cheapest way to livestream gaming replays already saved on your computer is to use that computer and a free software encoder such as OBS Studio. Start with the hardware you own, test a replay privately, and buy equipment only if the test reveals a specific problem. For a first settings test, YouTube recommends 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps; your upload connection and the demands of the replay still determine whether the stream is reliable.
What you need for the lowest-cost setup
For a replay file stored on the computer that will run the stream, the basic setup is a computer, the replay video, an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity, and encoder software. OBS Studio is a free software encoder. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreams and says expensive equipment is not required to get started.
- A computer: Use the one you already have before considering an upgrade. OBS’s minimum system requirements describe what is needed to run the software, not a guarantee that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate smoothly.
- A replay file: Have the gameplay video accessible on the streaming computer. Configure it as the encoder’s video source and make sure its audio is included.
- A YouTube channel that can livestream: The channel must meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements, including verification and no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days.
- Enough upload capacity: The connection must sustain the stream’s total bitrate, with room to spare.
A separate capture card is not the default purchase when the replay file is already on the computer doing the encoding. A capture card may matter for some external-console setups, but it is not established as necessary for this same-computer workflow. A webcam and microphone are optional for a replay-only broadcast.
Set up OBS and YouTube
- Check that livestreaming is enabled. In YouTube Live Control Room, follow the channel’s setup flow. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its general livestreaming requirements set a minimum age of 16.
- Create or schedule the livestream in YouTube Live Control Room. Select the stream’s visibility and enter any title or description you need. Use a private or unlisted test before making a broadcast public.
- Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream key. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s encoder setup and enter it in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it or show it on screen.
- Add the saved replay as the video source. In OBS, add the file as a media source and check that the intended audio is reaching the stream. OBS controls and looping behavior can vary by release and operating system, so confirm the options in your installed version rather than assuming a particular loop setting.
- Set an initial output mode and test. Use the settings below as a starting point, then test the actual replay. Watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room for video, audio, and connection problems.
- Confirm the result before announcing the stream. Check the complete path—replay playback, audio, encoder output, and YouTube reception—with a private or unlisted test that includes representative movement and sound.
Starting settings for 720p at 30 fps
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance recommends a 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 frames per second. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every game scene or internet connection will look or perform well at those settings.

| Setting | Initial test value or guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p at 30 fps |
| Video bitrate | 2 Mbps recommended by YouTube for 720p at 30 fps |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Codec for RTMP/RTMPS | H.264 |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
These figures concern the video stream settings. Audio and protocol overhead also use upload capacity, so do not treat the video bitrate alone as the full connection requirement. YouTube advises leaving about 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate and emphasizes a reliable connection. Run an upload-speed test, then verify the result with a real test stream rather than relying on a speed-test figure alone.
Test performance before buying hardware
Replay encoding load depends on the computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS cautions that meeting its baseline system requirements does not mean a computer is capable of streaming or recording adequately. Test the actual replay and watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, audio problems, and YouTube stream-health warnings.

- If the encoder struggles: Try a less demanding resolution or frame rate and test again. Check whether the computer has a hardware encoder you can use before shopping for a new GPU or dedicated encoder.
- If the network is unstable: Compare the stream bitrate with available upload capacity and leave the recommended headroom. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, trying an Ethernet connection is a reasonable low-cost troubleshooting step; YouTube does not require a particular cable or a wired connection.
- If the replay comes from a separate console: Reassess the signal path. A capture card can be relevant to an external-console workflow, unlike a replay file already stored on the encoding computer.
- If the show needs commentary or a camera: Add those only if they serve the intended broadcast. They are not prerequisites for streaming a replay.
Check game and music rights before going live
Owning a game does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast or monetize its footage or music. YouTube’s guidance says monetization of game content depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. It also warns that extended footage consisting simply of gameplay may not be accepted for monetization without appropriate permissions; instructional commentary tied to the live action can be relevant. Check the policy for the specific game and consider music rights separately. Publisher terms vary, so no general platform summary can determine permission for an unspecified title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOr let it run in the cloud
If you want the replay to keep streaming without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed. It does not require a computer, OBS, or a home connection to stay on.

Can I use OBS to livestream a saved gameplay video?
Yes. Configure the saved file as a video source, include its audio, and verify playback in a private or unlisted test. Exact media-source and looping controls depend on the OBS version and operating system.
Can I monetize a gaming replay livestream?
Possibly, but permission depends on the specific game publisher’s commercial-use terms and the content. YouTube’s guidance does not establish blanket monetization rights for gameplay.
