ChatGPT ads can appear as sponsored cards below an answer, as a separate visual placement while an image is being generated, or as an optional conversation with a business-sponsored agent. The visual format is the newest: OpenAI announced an initial U.S. test for Free and Go users later in October 2026, so it should not be mistaken for a feature already available to everyone.

What the ChatGPT ad formats look like

Format Where it appears What the user sees or can do Status described by OpenAI
Response ad Below the end of a ChatGPT response A clearly labeled “Sponsored” unit, visually separated from the answer. Depending on the unit, it may include an advertiser name, logo or favicon, headline, description, landing page, and image. Documented as part of OpenAI’s ads pilot. Users may see one or more units when a relevant match is available.
Visual ad during image generation During an image-generation interaction A separate, labeled image intended to offer product inspiration, show a product in use, or depict an experience made possible by a product or service. OpenAI says it remains separate from the image ChatGPT is creating. OpenAI announced an initial U.S. test planned for later in October 2026, for Free and Go users.
Sponsored Agent After a user sees an ad and chooses to start a conversation A clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and the original chat. OpenAI said this was being tested with select advertisers in the U.S.

OpenAI’s October 5, 2026 announcement describes the image-generation placement as a new format, not simply a picture added to the response-ad card. The company says the ad will be labeled and separate from the generated image. That means the visual ad is presented alongside the image-making experience, rather than incorporated into the image ChatGPT creates.

How the new visual ad differs from the sponsored card

Response ads are cards beneath an answer

The established response-ad format appears after ChatGPT’s answer, rather than inside the answer itself. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics says a unit is labeled “Sponsored” and visually separated. Its advertiser documentation lists possible components including the advertiser’s name, favicon or logo, headline, description, landing page, and image.

Visual ads accompany image generation

The newly announced format is designed around images that show product inspiration or use. It is intended to be distinct from both the generated image and the text answer, rather than another conventional sponsored card. OpenAI said the initial test would begin later in October in the U.S. for Free and Go users; the announcement does not establish that it is already live or available in other countries.

Sponsored Agents are an optional next step

A Sponsored Agent is not just another ad creative. OpenAI describes it as a separate business-sponsored conversation that a user may choose to start after seeing an ad. The company’s September 2026 overview says these conversations are distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and the original chat, and that testing was underway with select U.S. advertisers.

Where ads may appear and who may see them

OpenAI’s formats do not share one rollout footprint. The visual-format announcement specifies an initial U.S. test, while the company’s August 11, 2026 pilot update lists the U.S., U.K., Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea for the ads pilot. That broader list should not be read as availability of every format in every listed country.

OpenAI’s Help Center says ads may be shown to Free and Go users, and are not shown to Plus, Pro, or Business users. Its February pilot announcement also excluded Enterprise and Education, and the Help Center says accounts under 18 are ineligible. Plans and regional eligibility can change as the pilot develops, so the current Help Center is the place to check for an individual account’s status.

How OpenAI says ad matching and privacy work

OpenAI says selection can consider the conversation’s context and intent, the ad’s landing page, title and copy, advertiser-provided context hints, and targeting selections. If personalization is enabled, it says selected signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience may also be used.

Advertisers can provide context hints, but OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee that an ad will appear in a particular conversation. As the Help Center puts it, “These hints help guide ad matching, but they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in specific conversations.”

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive users’ chats, history, memories, or personal details. It says advertisers instead receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as total views or clicks. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its matching and privacy policies, not independent measurements of the systems.

Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?

OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, and that sponsored content is kept separate from the answer. This is the company’s stated policy, not a claim that has been independently verified through published testing. The practical distinction to look for is the “Sponsored” label and the separation between the response and the ad unit.

What is known about the new format’s performance?

OpenAI’s October 5 announcement says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week; that is an OpenAI-published reach figure, not an independently verified user count. The sources reviewed do not provide measured click-through, conversion, or revenue results for the new visual format, so there is no published basis yet to say that it improves advertising outcomes.
