Choose where to host an AI-built website based on what you have in hand and how much control you need. ChatGPT Sites is designed for creating and publishing a lightweight site from a prompt. Netlify documents ways to deploy an AI-generated project folder or code, including uploads, an AI-tool workflow, the CLI, and Git-linked deployments. Vercel is another option when you need a domain and deployment workflow, though the cited documentation here covers its domain setup rather than a full platform comparison.
There is no established universal winner: the available official documentation describes workflows and constraints, not comparable prices, performance, or portability.
Which hosting route fits the project you have?
| Your starting point or priority | Route to consider | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| You have a prompt and want to create, refine, preview, and publish a lightweight site in ChatGPT. | ChatGPT Sites | Its workflow is prompt-led and includes a private preview and a production URL. |
| An AI tool has already produced a project folder or code, and you want to deploy those files. | Netlify | Its documentation describes drag-and-drop, AI-tool, CLI, and Git-connected deployment routes. |
| You are considering a separate deployment provider and need to configure or obtain a domain. | Vercel | Its documentation explains adding a domain and says a domain can also be purchased through Vercel. |
These are workflow distinctions, not a ranking. The cited materials do not establish that one option is universally cheaper, faster, easier, or more portable than another.

How ChatGPT Sites works—and who can use it
OpenAI describes Sites as a way to create, edit, preview, publish, share, and manage interactive websites and lightweight apps. You start in Work on the ChatGPT web app, or Work/Codex on desktop, describe the site and provide relevant source content or constraints, then review a private preview and refine it. Saving a version before deployment lets you review changes without updating the live site. Deployment creates a production URL. OpenAI’s Sites guide has the current workflow.
#1 Best Overall
The guide describes Sites as a public beta for ChatGPT workspaces, Plus, and Pro. It says the feature is not available on Free or Go, and notes that rollout and workspace configuration affect access. Beta use is included up to plan-specific limits; those limits can change and may affect creating a site, adding storage, or keeping a high-usage site public. Check the Sites experience in your account for the limits that apply rather than relying on a static cap.
Domains and technical requirements
For a custom domain in ChatGPT Sites, you need to own the domain and be able to change its DNS records. OpenAI says custom domains are not available in Enterprise workspaces at launch. Sites also does not support data residency or inference residency at launch. OpenAI cautions that some frameworks, private networks, databases, background services, and hosting patterns may not be supported. Check whether your specific project depends on one of them before choosing Sites.
What deploying AI-generated files with Netlify involves
Netlify’s AI-generated sites quickstart describes three ways to get a project online: drag and drop the project, share Netlify context with the AI tool, or use the Netlify CLI. Its broader deployment documentation distinguishes preview deploys from production deploys and explains that pushes to a connected Git repository can trigger continuous deployment. It also documents previews for changes made by supported AI agent runs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis route makes sense to consider when the AI has already produced files or when you want the deployment process managed separately from the prompt-and-publish experience. The documentation establishes available workflows, not a claim that Netlify is always easier, cheaper, faster, or more portable than Sites.

What the Vercel domain documentation establishes
Vercel’s custom-domain guide covers adding and configuring a domain; it also says users who do not own a domain can purchase one through Vercel. That makes Vercel a possible domain and deployment path to investigate. The cited material does not provide a full feature-by-feature comparison with ChatGPT Sites or Netlify, so it is not enough to rank the platforms overall.
Compare the workflows before you commit
Start with the artifact
- A brief or prompt, but no project files: ChatGPT Sites supports prompt-led creation and iteration.
- A generated project folder or code: Netlify documents deployment routes for existing files and code.
Decide how you want to review and release
Sites offers a private preview and lets you save a version before deployment so it does not replace the live site. Netlify documents preview deployments, production deployments, and Git-triggered continuous deployment. Choose the process that matches whether you want an explicit publish step, deploy previews, or releases triggered by repository changes.
Rank #4
Check domain ownership and account rules
Before relying on a custom domain with Sites, confirm you own it, can edit its DNS records, and are not in an Enterprise workspace, where OpenAI says custom domains are unavailable at launch. Vercel documents both configuring a domain and purchasing one through its service. For any provider, check the current requirements and account availability directly before planning a launch.
Check governance, sharing, and data needs
A new Site starts with restricted access. Depending on account and workspace settings, sharing can include the owner or admins, selected people or groups, workspace members, or public internet access when enabled. Enterprise public publishing is off by default; an administrator must enable it and use role-based controls to grant access. OpenAI’s admin guidance explains these controls.
Best Value
Connected-app access is separate from workspace approval: approval does not automatically give a Site access to every member’s data. Each visitor authorizes their own connection using their existing app permissions. If data residency or inference residency is a requirement, note that OpenAI says Sites does not support either at launch.
Verify the runtime fit
If the project depends on a particular framework, private network, database, background service, or other hosting pattern, verify that the intended platform supports that exact requirement. OpenAI flags some of these patterns as unsupported in Sites; the available documentation does not establish that every project will need them or provide a complete cross-platform compatibility matrix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review the site before sharing it
Preview the result as a visitor would, check the content and behavior, and confirm that the intended audience can access it before publishing or sharing. OpenAI advises creators to review a Site’s preview or private version before sharing or publishing. It also says creators are responsible for the Site and its content, including visitor-submitted content and relevant legal compliance; hosting does not itself establish compliance. See OpenAI’s responsibilities guidance.
