Found the perfect outfit but aren’t sure how it’ll look on you? For a preview of a supported garment on a person, Google Shopping’s dedicated Try On workflow is the more direct choice. ChatGPT’s documented shopping experience is better suited to finding, browsing, and comparing products through conversation. Neither service’s images are proof of fit or sizing.
What’s the difference between ChatGPT shopping and Google Shopping Try On?
They solve different parts of shopping. OpenAI describes ChatGPT shopping as a conversational way to discover products: explain what you want, refine the search, browse visual results, use an image for inspiration, and compare products side by side. Product details can include price, reviews, and features. The announcement does not describe a dedicated workflow that places a listed garment on a photo of the shopper. OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 announcement said the update was rolling out to Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users that week; availability may change.
Google Shopping Try On is a garment preview attached to eligible listings. Google’s instructions describe choosing Try It On for a supported shirt, pair of pants, dress, or shoes, uploading a full-length photo, and viewing the result. You can save or share it, or browse similar styles. For shoppers in the U.S., Google also announced a path to create a full-body digital version from a selfie, alongside using a full-body photo or choosing from models. That is a specific preview workflow, rather than a general product-comparison experience.

How to try on clothes with Google Shopping
- Open a supported clothing or shoe listing in Google Shopping in a market where the feature is available.
- Look for the Try It On control. Its presence on the particular listing is the practical check that the item supports the workflow.
- Select the control and upload a full-length photo, following Google’s on-screen prompts. In the U.S., Google has also described generating a full-body digital version from a selfie; you can alternatively use a full-body photo or choose from available models.
- Review the generated preview. Google’s instructions also let shoppers save or share a result and browse similar styles.
Google’s how-to guidance, updated November 20, 2025, names shirts, pants, dresses, and shoes. Categories and access can vary by market and listing, so an announcement that the feature has launched in a country does not mean every item there is eligible.

Where is Google Shopping Try On available?
Availability has expanded over time and differs by region. Google’s May 6, 2026 announcement said Try On had become available in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, with tops, pants, dresses, and shoes. A March 2025 U.S. update described expansion from tops and dresses to pants and skirts, and models in sizes XXS–XXL. These are dated, region-specific announcements, not a promise of identical coverage worldwide. Google’s 2023 launch was U.S.-only and began with women’s tops, so that original scope should not be mistaken for the current catalog.
For the feature’s status in your own shopping session, check the listing for the Try It On control. Google’s regional announcements are its May 2026 Latin America update and its March 2025 U.S. update.

What an outfit preview can—and can’t—tell you
A generated image can help you visualize a style, but the cited product descriptions do not establish that either service reliably predicts garment fit, sizing, comfort, fabric behavior, or exact color. Treat a preview as a visual aid, not a substitute for checking a retailer’s size chart, measurements, materials, and return terms.
Google has reported that virtual try-on images received 60% more high-quality views on Search than other shopping images, based on its internal U.S. Shopping engagement data from August 2024; users tried clothes using four models per product on average. That measures engagement, not image accuracy, fit prediction, or fewer returns. Separately, Google/Ipsos reported that 42% of surveyed U.S. online clothing shoppers did not feel represented by model images and 59% had been dissatisfied with an online clothing item because it looked different than expected. Those figures came from a 2023 survey of 1,614 U.S. adults who had shopped for clothing online, fielded April 28–30, 2023; they are not universal or current rates. Google’s September 2024 announcement supplies the engagement figure, and its June 2023 announcement attributes the survey results.

No independent head-to-head accuracy, fit-prediction, or return-reduction statistic is established by the cited sources. Google’s stated aim is to help shoppers visualize clothing; that is not independent proof that its previews predict how an item will fit.

Choose Google Shopping Try On when you have found an eligible item and want to see a visual preview on a person. Choose ChatGPT shopping when you are still narrowing down what to buy, want to search conversationally or from an inspiration image, or need a side-by-side view of product details. If sizing or fit is the deciding factor, use the retailer’s measurements and policies rather than treating either generated image as a guarantee.
