ChatGPT Shopping Research lets people describe what they need, compare product options, and refine choices through conversation. For brands and merchants, that creates a product-discovery channel—but not a guaranteed route to recommendations, ranking, traffic, or sales. The practical priorities are accurate, complete product information and a purchase experience on the merchant’s own site or app.

1. Discovery can start with a need, not a brand name

Shoppers can describe a use case, budget, preferences, and constraints in ordinary language. OpenAI’s examples include “Find the quietest cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment,” “Help me choose between these three bikes,” and “I need a gift for my four year old niece who loves art.” Shopping Research can ask follow-up questions and refine the options. OpenAI describes the experience as a way to research and compare products.

Brand implication: explain who a product is for and what need it meets, as well as listing its technical specifications. A product page that makes its intended use clear is easier to assess against a shopper’s request; this is sound information design, not a published ranking formula.

2. The experience is suited to tradeoffs and multiple constraints

OpenAI describes Shopping Research as useful for decisions involving comparisons, tradeoffs, or multiple requirements. It may produce a guide to relevant considerations, a shortlist with rationale, and comparisons of attributes such as price, size, and features. OpenAI’s help guidance explains what shoppers may see and what they should verify.

Brand implication: make comparable attributes easy to find and verify on product pages and in catalog data. If size, compatibility, materials, or included accessories distinguish one model from another, state those details explicitly rather than relying on a shopper to infer them.

3. Complete, consistent product data supports accurate representation

OpenAI says merchant feeds can improve catalog coverage and provide richer details, including images, pricing, and reviews, while helping keep price and availability current. Shopify describes catalog information that includes pricing, inventory, images, and variants. OpenAI’s merchant page describes feed-based product information, and Shopify explains the catalog data available through its integration.

For a practical audit, check that:

  • Every active product and relevant variant is represented accurately.
  • Price, inventory, and availability agree with the merchant’s product page.
  • Images are present and correspond to the product and variant shown.
  • Titles and descriptions explain meaningful features and intended use.
  • Feed content and the landing page do not contradict each other.

These checks can reduce ambiguity in product information. OpenAI does not publish them as a guaranteed way to improve placement or ranking.

4. Merchants have more than one participation route

OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are integrated, and that other merchants can apply to share product feeds. Its merchant information lists SFTP, APIs, and commerce or feed-provider integrations as routes; the product-discovery announcement names Salesforce and Stripe among delivery paths. See OpenAI’s merchant information for the routes it describes and its product-discovery announcement for named integrations.

These are distinct ways catalog information may reach ChatGPT, not a promise that every merchant is included. Applying to share a feed does not establish acceptance, inclusion, or recommendation placement.

5. Named retail integrations are examples, not an eligibility checklist

OpenAI’s announcement identifies Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair as retailers integrated into ACP for discovery. It also says Shopify catalog integration applies to Shopify merchants. OpenAI’s announcement provides these integration examples.

The named retailers show that major retail catalogs are part of the experience; the list is not described as exhaustive, and resemblance to a listed retailer is not evidence that another merchant qualifies. A brand should follow the merchant route available to its business and market rather than infer eligibility from the examples.

6. Shopping Research is described as organic; advertising is separate

OpenAI says Shopping Research results are based on public retail sites and are organic. Its help guidance distinguishes Shopping Research from ads. OpenAI’s Shopping Research announcement and its help guidance make that distinction.

Accordingly, a product appearing in a Shopping Research response should not be described as a paid placement on the basis of these sources. Nor do the sources say that buying advertising guarantees inclusion in recommendations.

7. Retailer pages remain authoritative for final purchase details

OpenAI warns that shopping research can make mistakes and that prices, stock, and discounts can change. Its guidance tells shoppers to verify price, taxes, shipping, availability, options, return terms, and warranty on the retailer’s site. OpenAI’s help article sets out these verification points.

Brand implication: keep product details and checkout information current on the merchant’s own pages, and make sure catalog information does not conflict with them. The retailer’s site is where the shopper should confirm the actual terms before ordering.

8. Current merchant messaging favors discovery and merchant-owned checkout

OpenAI’s newer merchant guidance says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience and prioritizing product discovery with purchases completed on merchant-owned sites or apps. Its product-discovery announcement also says merchants can use their own checkout. OpenAI’s current merchant page and its product-discovery announcement describe this direction.

An earlier 2025 launch article described Instant Checkout and fees, but that launch-era description should not be treated as the current default without accounting for the later change. The older Instant Checkout announcement provides that earlier context.

9. Availability and onboarding are evolving

OpenAI’s merchant page says shopping is currently live in the United States, says it aims to offer a self-service merchant portal later in the year, and describes broader expansion as a plan. Those are time-sensitive statements, not a guarantee of availability in every market or a fixed launch date. Check OpenAI’s merchant page for the current geography and onboarding status before making operational plans.

Feed participation can give merchants a way to supply richer or more current product information, but OpenAI does not promise product placement or a particular amount of traffic. The official sources also do not establish an independently measured conversion lift, sales impact, or quantified brand-ranking benefit.

What brands should prioritize

A focused merchant review should start with product data and the shopper’s actual decision—not with assumptions about how to game a ranking system.

  1. Review shopper fit: state the product’s use case, relevant constraints, and differences among models.
  2. Audit catalog coverage: check products, variants, images, descriptions, prices, inventory, and availability.
  3. Compare feed and landing page: resolve conflicting titles, specifications, options, and purchase details.
  4. Confirm a workable feed route: check whether an integration, API, SFTP, or provider route is available to the merchant and market.
  5. Protect the purchase experience: keep the merchant’s own checkout and customer-facing product information accurate.

These are operational priorities derived from the published product and feed descriptions, not a disclosed recommendation algorithm or a promise of business results. OpenAI’s broad statement that “Hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to find, understand, and compare products” describes general usage, not unique active shoppers, completed purchases, or conversions. OpenAI also states, “Your chats are never shared with retailers.” Both statements appear in OpenAI’s Shopping Research announcement.
