Changing an Echo’s Wi-Fi connection should not, by itself, require deleting Alexa routines or groups. Amazon’s help pages explain how to change Wi-Fi and how routines and groups are managed, but they do not explicitly guarantee that those settings survive every Wi-Fi change. Expect them to remain in the same Alexa setup, then check your routines and device connections after reconnecting.
What to expect when you change Wi-Fi
Routines and smart-home groups are features managed in the Alexa app. A routine can include multiple actions, while a group collects devices so they can be controlled together. Changing an Echo’s network connection is a separate configuration step, so it is reasonable to expect the existing Alexa setup to remain intact if you are only changing Wi-Fi. That expectation is an inference from Amazon’s documented workflows, not an explicit Amazon guarantee.
After the Echo reconnects, open the Alexa app and check that your routines are still listed, that group membership is correct, and that the relevant devices show as online. The reconnect process does not call for deleting routines or groups.

Reconnect an Echo to Wi-Fi
Echo devices without a screen
- Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
- Select the Echo, then open Device Settings.
- Choose Change or remove a Wi-Fi network.
- Choose a previously used network, or select Join another Wi-Fi Network and follow the prompts.
Echo devices with a screen
Amazon directs owners of Echo devices with screens to change Wi-Fi on the device itself. The 2024 Echo Spot also offers a QR-code route from its screen into the app setup flow.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Amazon’s general setup guidance says Echo devices connect to common home Wi-Fi networks on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands using 802.11a/b/g/n. Echo devices cannot connect to ad-hoc, or peer-to-peer, networks. If a network does not appear or setup fails, check the setup instructions for your specific Echo model.
When routines or groups may need attention
A Wi-Fi change alone is different from removing or resetting a device. If an Echo or smart-home device has been reset, deregistered, removed from Alexa, or rediscovered as a different device, its associations may need repair. Amazon’s cited help pages do not establish how every such case affects routines or groups.

- Confirm routines still appear in the Alexa app and review any actions that depend on the reconnected device.
- Check group membership and confirm each intended device is online.
- If a device is missing or offline, reconnect or set it up again before changing routine or group assignments.
Third-party smart-home devices
Amazon says Wi-Fi settings can be changed in the Alexa app for Amazon devices and Matter devices. For a third-party Wi-Fi device that is not Matter certified, use the manufacturer’s app to set it up before connecting it to Alexa.
If a third-party device stops responding through Alexa, try controlling it in the manufacturer’s app. If it works there but not in Alexa, Amazon recommends reactivating the related skill. Amazon lists resetting the Alexa and smart-home devices as a further option if those steps do not work.
