Change.org says it will invest $100 million over three years to rebuild its petition platform and expand tools for local civic participation. The commitment is funded, according to CEO Ben Rattray, by people who contribute financially to the platform each year—not described as a new venture-capital round. The company has also announced an AI copilot beta for petition creators; secondary reporting says it can help draft campaigns, find possible endorsers and clarify routes to decision-makers, but its availability and impact have not been fully specified.

What does Change.org’s $100 million investment cover?

In an announcement published October 2, 2026, CEO Ben Rattray said Change.org would invest $100 million over the next three years in technology and support intended to give people a stronger voice in local democracy. He described the company as rebuilding its petition platform and preparing tools for local civic participation. The figure is a three-year commitment, not evidence that the full amount has already been spent. Rattray’s announcement says the investment is funded by more than three million people who financially contribute to Change.org annually.

The emphasis on local decision-making is part of the stated purpose of the rebuild. Rattray’s announcement also cites Change.org’s historical totals: more than five million petition creators, more than 500 million people mobilized and more than 100,000 victories. Those are figures attributed to the CEO, rather than an independently audited measure of the new investment’s results.

What is the new AI copilot beta?

Change.org’s announcement describes an assistant intended to help people create advocacy campaigns and says its AI tools should be “human-centered and human-controlled.” Axios reported that the petition-creator copilot beta can assist with drafting, identifying possible endorsers and clarifying paths to decision-makers. That is a secondary description, not a complete product specification; the announcement does not detail every function.

The sources reviewed do not establish the beta’s precise launch date, who is eligible, its geographic reach, which AI model it uses, or how it handles user data. The announcement’s focus on U.S. local democracy should not be read as confirmation that the beta is available throughout the United States—or globally. Axios’s October 2 report summarizes the reported functions but does not settle those rollout details.

How does the beta differ from AI tools already on Change.org?

Change.org already documents AI-assisted features in its petition workflow. Its official AI petition tools guide describes a writing assistant that uses a creator’s answers to draft a title, recommended ask and petition story, as well as image generation, decision-maker matching, milestone-based outreach, discovery and social assets. The guide says these features are free and integrated into the platform.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Those existing tools provide context, but they should not be treated as a confirmed feature list for the newly announced copilot beta. The guide gives some operational thresholds for U.S. petitions: decision-maker matching after 10 signatures and milestone outreach beginning around 100 signatures. These details may vary by campaign or geography and can change, so creators should check the live guide for the current workflow.

Has Change.org shown that AI makes petitions more successful?

Not for the new beta. A 2025 study by Corpus, Gilbert, Koenecke and Naaman analyzed 1.5 million petitions and examined an earlier Change.org “write with AI” tool. The authors reported that AI access changed petition language, increased homogeneity and did not improve petition outcomes. The study is relevant context about an earlier writing tool, but it did not evaluate the 2026 copilot beta and cannot establish whether that beta helps or harms campaign results. Read the study.

Is Change.org investing its own money?

The announcement characterizes the money as an investment funded by annual financial contributors to Change.org. The company’s business-model page says the platform is supported when users pay to promote petitions or contribute through membership. It also identifies Change.org as a Public Benefit Corporation overseen by the Change.org Foundation. Calling the $100 million a user-funded company investment is more precise than describing Change.org simply as a donation-funded nonprofit.
