Generative AI can help testers draft test cases, assertions, and test code, but a generated test is only a candidate—not proof that the software behaves correctly. The hardest problems are deciding whether expected results are right, detecting unstable tests, and evaluating model output without overstating what a benchmark or small user study shows.

Why generative AI does not remove the hard parts of testing

A test can compile, execute, and increase code coverage while still missing a defect or asserting the wrong behavior. Generative AI can produce plausible test code quickly, but plausibility is not correctness. The test still needs an oracle—the expected result or condition that determines whether behavior is correct—and evidence that the test is stable and useful for the task at hand.

This distinction matters throughout AI-assisted testing: generating more tests is not the same as improving bug detection, and a positive user experience is not the same as a measured improvement in test effectiveness.

Test oracles are difficult to generate well

A test oracle specifies what the program should do. For a simple function, that may be an expected return value. For more complex behavior, it can involve state changes, interactions, ordering, exceptions, or multiple valid outcomes. If an assertion encodes the wrong expectation, the test can reject correct software or pass when a defect is present.

A 2025 study by Davide Molinelli, Luca Di Grazia, Alberto Martin-Lopez, Michael D. Ernst, and Mauro Pezzè examined 13,866 test oracles from 135 Java projects. The projects were created after the tested models’ training cutoffs. In that study’s setup, generated oracles had an average mutation score of 43%, compared with 45% for human-designed oracles. The authors also identify limits for complex oracles and describe thorough oracle generation as an open problem.

Those figures are results for that experiment, not a general estimate for every model, programming language, project, or testing task. Similar average scores in one evaluation do not mean generated and human-written tests are interchangeable in other settings.

What mutation score says—and does not say

Mutation testing introduces small changes, or mutations, into a program and checks whether tests detect them. A mutation score indicates how many of the evaluated mutations a test suite catches. It probes whether tests can distinguish some faulty versions from the original; it does not prove that a suite will find real-world defects or that its assertions reflect every requirement.

Generated tests can be flaky

A flaky test does not produce a consistent result under conditions where the tested behavior is expected to be stable. It may pass on one run and fail on another because it depends on timing, execution order, shared state, or assumptions that the environment does not guarantee. Such tests can waste debugging time and make genuine regressions harder to spot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2026 study of four database systems found a slightly higher proportion of flaky cases among LLM-generated tests than among existing tests. Of 115 flaky generated tests examined, 72 (63%) relied on an order that was not guaranteed—for example, by omitting an explicit SQL ORDER BY. This is a finding in the studied database settings, not a universal rate for AI-generated tests.

How to check stability

  • Run generated tests repeatedly in the environments where they will be used, including relevant database versions and configurations.
  • Inspect tests that depend on returned row order. In SQL, specify ORDER BY when the expected order matters instead of relying on an incidental order.
  • Look for hidden dependencies on shared data, prior test execution, time, or runtime state.
  • Investigate intermittent failures rather than treating a passing rerun as proof that the test is sound. Repetition can expose some instability, but it cannot guarantee discovery of every flaky condition.

Benchmark results can be misleading if evaluation data overlaps training data

A benchmark is useful only to the extent that it measures performance on a task the model has not effectively already seen. If public benchmark examples overlap with model training data, results may overstate how well the model generalizes. This is a threat to evaluation validity, not proof that every public benchmark is contaminated.

The 2025 oracle study addressed this particular risk by using projects created after the tested models’ training cutoffs. That design helps reduce the overlap concern for the reported experiment; it does not establish that all test-generation evaluations are contaminated or that a post-cutoff dataset eliminates every source of bias.

Questions to ask when reading an evaluation

  • Which models, programming language, repositories, and test tasks were evaluated?
  • What is known about the data’s relationship to each model’s training cutoff?
  • Was success measured by code coverage, mutation testing, bug detection, error tracing, localization, or another task-level outcome?
  • Were tests executed and assessed for stability, or judged only by their source code?

Results from different languages, datasets, model versions, and evaluation methods are not directly interchangeable. A coverage result, for example, should not be presented as though it established mutation score or real-defect detection.

Hallucinations and reasoning errors require mitigation

AI-generated tests can include invented APIs, incorrect assumptions about program behavior, or assertions that appear reasonable but are not supported by the specification. The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB), in its 2025 materials, frames hallucinations and reasoning errors as risks testers should identify and mitigate. Its guidance says testers cannot prevent these errors from occurring; it is not a measured estimate of how often they occur.

Review generated tests against the requirements, API contracts, and behavior the software is meant to support. Pay particular attention to assertions and setup data: those determine what behavior the test treats as correct.

User experience is not the same as measured effectiveness

An observational study by Ardic, Le Dilavrec, and Zaidman involved 12 undergraduate participants. Participants reported perceived time savings and help with test ideation, alongside diminished trust, quality concerns, and a lack of ownership. The study did not find significant effects of prompting strategies on measured test effectiveness or test code quality.

These findings describe a small novice-student sample. They are useful for understanding possible user experiences in that setting, but they do not establish how professional teams generally perform or whether AI assistance improves their outcomes.

Coverage alone is not enough to judge generated tests

Line or branch coverage can show which code was executed, but execution does not prove that a test would detect an incorrect result. A test may visit a line while making no meaningful assertion about its behavior.

A 2024 study introduced MuTAP, which uses mutation testing to assess whether generated tests expose seeded faults. Mutation testing is one evaluation approach, not a guarantee of test quality or a universally accepted single measure. Where feasible, combine coverage information with task-relevant checks such as assertion review, mutation testing, and whether tests detect the failures they are intended to catch.

A practical review workflow for AI-generated tests

  1. Confirm the task and expected behavior. Identify the requirement, contract, or defect the test is supposed to cover before accepting generated assertions.
  2. Review the oracle. Check that expected values, exceptions, state changes, and ordering follow from the intended behavior rather than an assumption in the generated code.
  3. Check the test setup and dependencies. Inspect fixtures, data, API calls, and environmental assumptions for invented interfaces or hidden reliance on execution order.
  4. Run the tests and repeat them. Execute them in the relevant environment and rerun them to look for intermittent outcomes. Investigate failures and unexpected passes.
  5. Measure the outcome that matters. Use coverage as a signal about execution, not a substitute for effectiveness. Consider mutation testing or another task-appropriate measure when available.
  6. Interpret evaluation claims in context. Record the model, language, project type, dataset, and evaluation method before comparing results or applying them to another setting.

Where screenshot capture fits—and where it does not

For a visual-testing workflow, a screenshot can preserve what a rendered page looked like at a particular capture point. It is evidence for inspection, not a substitute for a test oracle or a determination that the interface is correct. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it does not generate or validate software tests. Its capture options include selecting an element, setting a viewport or device preset, and applying custom CSS or JavaScript. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

The cited findings do not establish general rates or impacts for privacy exposure, security vulnerabilities, intellectual-property disputes, or organizational costs specifically in generative-AI software testing.
