Certeon’s Secure Application Networking was a WAN acceleration solution announced in 2006, built around S-Series hardware appliances. Certeon said the appliances could accelerate HTTP and encrypted HTTPS traffic while preserving security between a remote user’s desktop and a data-center server. Those were vendor claims reported at the time, not independently verified test results.

What Certeon announced in 2006

On February 12, 2006, Enterprise Storage Forum reported that Burlington, Massachusetts-based Certeon had unveiled its Secure Application Networking WAN acceleration solution. The S-Series appliances used Certeon’s Secure Acceleration Technology. The company’s stated aim was to improve application response across a wide-area network without giving up the security of the connection between the user and the server.

Certeon CEO Peter Dougherty described the intended result as “the same application response time as well as the same level of security that’s available to users on the LAN.” Enterprise Storage Forum presented this as Dougherty’s claim; it is not a measured outcome. Enterprise Storage Forum’s February 12, 2006 report is the contemporary announcement source.

Could the Certeon appliance accelerate HTTPS traffic?

Certeon said Secure Acceleration Technology accelerated both HTTP and HTTPS (SSL) traffic across a WAN while maintaining security from the remote user’s desktop to the server in the data center. The report does not provide an independent security assessment or benchmark for the S-Series, so this describes the company’s 2006 claim rather than a verified result.

Which S-Series model was intended for each site?

Model Intended deployment
S-1000 Small branch offices
S-2000 Regional offices
S-3000 Large data centers

These deployment descriptions and the model names come from Enterprise Storage Forum’s 2006 report. It reported that S-Series pricing started at $6,000, but did not specify configuration, licensing, service terms, or a more precise price date. That is a historical starting price, not a current quote.

How Certeon’s later acceleration products changed

Later coverage described aCelera software products rather than a direct continuation or performance update for the S-Series hardware. In May 2008, Network World reported that the aCelera Virtual Appliance was designed for virtualized environments, was certified for VMware ESX and ESXi, and supported centralized provisioning and integration with VMware Virtual Center. The report also listed compression, QoS, and HTTP, TCP, and CIFS optimization. Certeon claimed that the product could reduce WAN application response time by up to 95%; this was a vendor claim about aCelera, not an independent test or a result for the 2006 S-Series. Network World’s May 20, 2008 coverage gives the product context.

InfoWorld’s coverage from the same date characterized aCelera as software intended to run on virtualized servers and standard x86 hardware instead of requiring a dedicated appliance. InfoWorld’s report provides that additional description.

On June 21, 2011, Certeon announced aCelera Enterprise for Windows, software integrated with Windows Server 2008 R2 for WAN optimization. In the company announcement, Dougherty said it would allow “a Windows 2008 server that’s already on-premise to be converted into a high-performing accelerator without requiring any additional hardware or hypervisor to run on.” This was a company announcement and an attributed vendor statement, not an independent evaluation. The 2011 announcement republished by Newswire.com describes that offering.

What the historical reports do—and do not—establish

  • The S-Series was a dedicated hardware WAN acceleration line announced in 2006, with models mapped to small branches, regional offices, and large data centers.
  • Certeon said the S-Series accelerated HTTP and HTTPS while retaining security end to end; the contemporary report does not independently substantiate that claim.
  • The $6,000 starting price belongs to the 2006 report and lacks the configuration details needed to compare it with another product or a current price.
  • The later aCelera reports document a shift toward virtualized and Windows-based software deployment, but do not establish current product availability, support status, or company status.
