It is a feature-rich package on paper for visual observing and for people exploring astrophotography, but the available evidence is manufacturer documentation rather than independent testing. Treat its tracking, portability, and imaging suitability as claims to verify against your own needs—not as proven performance results.
What this review covers
This is the standard Advanced VX 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain package, Celestron item 12026. It is not the AVX 8-inch EdgeHD, the 8-inch Newtonian package, or the AVX mount sold on its own. Those distinctions matter: the optical design and included components differ.
Celestron describes this SCT package as intended for visual observers and imagers. Its product page, accessed in 2026, displayed a US price of $2,199 and “In stock” on October 7, 2026; price and availability can change, so check the listing for your region before buying. What comes in the package
The package pairs the optical tube with Celestron’s Advanced VX mount and NexStar+ hand control. The included observing accessories are a 25 mm eyepiece, a 1.25-inch star diagonal, and a 6×30 finderscope. A steel tripod with 2-inch legs is also specified. This is not a bare optical tube, though buyers may still want different eyepieces or other accessories for their observing plans.

What the 8-inch SCT optics mean
The telescope has an 8-inch (203.2 mm) aperture and a focal ratio of f/10, with StarBright XLT coatings, according to Celestron. The relatively long focal ratio and Schmidt-Cassegrain design are the core of this package: the product is not the same optical configuration as the AVX Newtonian or EdgeHD variants.
Celestron says the 8-inch tube gathers 84% more light than a 6-inch telescope. That is the manufacturer’s stated comparison, not an independently verified observing result. Aperture alone also does not establish image quality or the performance a particular observer will see; conditions, setup, and the rest of the system matter.

What the AVX mount adds—and what its rating does not tell you
The computerized German equatorial mount is specified with GoTo slewing and tracking, All-Star Polar Alignment, permanently programmable periodic error correction, an autoguider port, and two AUX ports. Celestron also says the mount supports imaging across the meridian and describes CPWI control software with ASCOM telescope interface support. These are listed features, not measured evidence of pointing accuracy, tracking quality, setup time, or successful imaging results.
Celestron rates the AVX mount for a 30 lb (13.6 kg) payload and explicitly says this excludes the counterweights. That figure is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that every combination at or below the limit will track well for astrophotography. The listed mount-head weight is 17 lb (7.71 kg), the tripod is 18 lb (8.16 kg), and the mount-and-tripod package includes one 12 lb counterweight. Those components make transport and repeated setup a real consideration; Celestron’s published specifications do not establish how manageable the complete assembled system is in practice. Check the dovetail before mounting another optical tube
The AVX’s dual saddle is specified for CG-5 and CGE formats, as well as Vixen-format plates that are at least 100 mm long. Celestron says Losmandy D-format plates are not compatible. If you plan to use a different optical tube, check both its dovetail format and the plate’s length before purchase or setup.
Celestron’s FAQ says a Vixen/CG-5 plate shorter than 100 mm should be replaced with a compatible plate, and names the Celestron #94213 Universal Mounting Plate, CG-5 as an example. Confirm that your tube and existing plate match the stated format and length before buying a replacement. The same FAQ confirms that a sufficiently long Vixen plate is supported. [c01]

Who should consider the Advanced VX 8 SCT?
Visual observers
The 8-inch aperture, included eyepiece, diagonal, and finder make this a complete starting package for someone seeking a computerized SCT rather than assembling a tube and mount separately. Celestron’s 84% light-gathering comparison with a 6-inch telescope is a manufacturer claim; it should not be treated as a promise of a particular view or as a substitute for considering observing conditions and portability.

The listed equatorial mount features, autoguider connection, and periodic error correction are relevant to imaging workflows. However, Celestron’s published materials do not provide independent tests of tracking or imaging, and the 30 lb payload figure should not be used by itself to decide whether a loaded setup is suitable. Buyers should account for the telescope, camera, adapters, and other mounted equipment, then seek evidence for the specific imaging configuration they intend to use.

What to verify before ordering
- Confirm the listing is item 12026, the standard 8-inch SCT—not the EdgeHD, Newtonian, or mount-only product.
- Check that f/10 SCT optics suit your intended observing and imaging approach.
- If you are reusing an optical tube, verify the dovetail format and that a Vixen/CG-5 plate is at least 100 mm long.
- For imaging, evaluate the full mounted equipment load and obtain configuration-specific tracking evidence rather than relying only on the payload rating.
