A CD recorder writes audio or data to a recordable disc; whether another device can play that disc depends on the disc type, recording format, and how the session was closed. For reliable playback, choose media supported by both the recorder and the intended player, then follow the recorder’s instructions for finalizing or closing the disc.
Choose between CD-R and CD-RW
CD-R is intended for recording that you do not plan to erase and reuse. In the Philips CDR 560/538 manual, finalizing a CD-R prevents further recording. CD-RW is rewritable, but that does not mean you can always add or erase content while it is finalized: the same manual says a finalized CD-RW must first be unfinalized before further recording or erasure. These are instructions for those Philips models; check your own recorder’s manual before finalizing.
- Choose CD-R when you want a record-once disc and do not expect to revise it.
- Choose CD-RW when you need to erase and record again, and your intended player supports CD-RW.
- Before buying either type, verify the recorder supports the disc and its stated recording speed.
The Philips manual also says finalization is needed for playback on a regular, non-recording CD player. The exact behavior can vary by equipment, so treat finalization as a compatibility step to check—not a universal substitute for confirming the player’s supported media.

Use a standalone CD recorder
A standalone recorder is suited to recording from the inputs and sources supported by that unit. Check its manual for compatible disc types, recording modes, and the procedure for closing or finalizing a recording. Do not assume that one model’s finalization controls or supported media apply to another.

Burn a disc from a computer
A computer can create an MP3 CD-R or CD-RW when the writer and authoring software support the job. In its FW-V series manual, Philips describes making an MP3 CD-R(W) with a home PC and advises staying at or below the recording speed printed on the disc. It also advises not to run other programs during recording. These are recommendations for the documented Philips system, not universal requirements for all computer burners.
The same FW-V manual lists ISO9660 and Joliet support for that system. Before burning, check the target player’s documentation for supported file systems and audio formats as well as disc type; an MP3 data disc is not necessarily playable in a device that reads ordinary audio CDs.

Will my CD player read this disc?
There is no single compatibility answer for every player. The Philips FW-V manual lists finalized audio CDR and CDRW among the media supported by that system, while its MP3-CD playback has separate format requirements. That is a model-specific example, not evidence that all CD players read finalized CD-Rs, CD-RWs, or MP3 CDs.

How sessions and packet writing can affect playback
Disc-authoring settings can matter as much as the media type. Sony’s RDR-HX820 operating instructions warn that, for certain content on multi-session or multi-border discs, only content in the first session or border may play on that recorder. The manual also cautions that some packet-written data discs may not play. These are limitations documented for that Sony model; they do not establish that all multi-session or packet-written discs fail on every player.
If a disc plays on the computer that created it but not on a standalone player, check whether the player supports the disc’s format and recording layout. When compatibility is uncertain, use the authoring options and disc-closing procedure specified in the target player’s manual.
