For an FFmpeg H.264 stream to YouTube Live, use CBR at YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, and set a two-second keyframe interval. For common 1080p outputs, that means 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 12 Mbps at 60 fps. These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest settings; YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, whose playback bitrate can differ.

Choose the bitrate for your ingest format

Bitrate depends on the video codec, output resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current English-language encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. The figures below are the recommended ingest bitrates stated in the supplied YouTube guidance; check the full table for your exact format before streaming.

Codec Output Recommended video bitrate
H.264 1080p30 10 Mbps
H.264 1080p60 12 Mbps
H.264 720p30 or 720p60 6 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p30 10 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p60 12 Mbps

Do not treat these values as interchangeable across codecs or resolutions. YouTube’s full table covers additional formats, including 360p through 2160p. Use the recommendation for the codec FFmpeg actually sends, not merely the codec of your source file.

Set CBR, keyframes, and audio in FFmpeg

YouTube lists CBR (constant bitrate) as its bitrate encoding mode and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For a 30 fps output, two seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames.

Illustrative 1080p30 H.264 command

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
  -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -x264-params "nal-hrd=cbr:force-cfr=1"
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"

Replace INPUT and STREAM_KEY with your actual input and YouTube stream key. Adapt the audio options to your source and production. This is a starting point, not a guarantee of strict wire-rate behavior or a universal command: available FFmpeg options and encoder behavior depend on the build and selected encoder.

  • -b:v sets the target video bitrate in bits per second. Here, 10M corresponds to the 1080p30 H.264 recommendation.
  • -minrate and -maxrate constrain the encoder’s rate control. Setting both to the target expresses CBR intent, but does not by itself guarantee perfectly constant traffic on the network.
  • -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer in bits. The 20M value shown is a chosen example, not a YouTube-mandated setting; validate it with your encoder build and actual stream.
  • -x264-params "nal-hrd=cbr:force-cfr=1" requests libx264 CBR HRD signaling and constant frame rate. FFmpeg’s libx264 documentation notes that HRD CBR signaling requires a VBV buffer and is not allowed in an MP4 container. The example sends FLV over RTMPS.
  • -g sets the GOP/keyframe interval in frames. Use 60 at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps for a two-second interval; -g 60 is not two seconds at every frame rate.

Avoid copying a generic -maxrate that differs from your chosen target and then calling the result strict CBR. Generic bitrate and VBV controls set rate-control constraints; the encoder and its build determine the resulting behavior.

Other output settings to check

  • Use RTMPS where your setup supports it; YouTube recommends it and lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingestion protocols.
  • Use progressive scan and square pixels. For SDR, YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709.
  • YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends AAC stereo at 128 Kbps, or AAC 5.1 at 384 Kbps.
  • The same guidance specifies two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Confirm that your chosen encoder and settings produce a compatible stream.

Calculate the keyframe interval correctly

The GOP length in frames is the output frame rate multiplied by the interval in seconds. For YouTube’s recommended two-second interval, set -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds, so at 30 fps the upper limit is 120 frames, and at 60 fps it is 240 frames. Keep the output frame rate and GOP settings aligned.

Test before going live

  1. Choose the actual output. Decide the resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec, then select that combination’s recommended bitrate from YouTube’s encoder table.
  2. Check upload capacity. Your sustained upload connection must carry the video, audio, and network overhead reliably. YouTube recommends an upload speed test and using a quality the available connection can sustain.
  3. Configure and run a safe test. Set CBR intent, the target bitrate, and a two-second GOP. Test privately or in another safe setup with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
  4. Review stream health. Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder warnings during the test. If the uplink or machine cannot sustain the selected settings, adjust the output or bitrate and test again.
  5. Monitor the live event. Keep an eye on stream health and messages while broadcasting so you can respond to dropped frames or other warnings.

Troubleshoot common configuration problems

  • Stream health reports an unstable or insufficient bitrate: Check whether your sustained upload capacity can support video, audio, and overhead. Reduce the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution/frame rate, then run another representative test.
  • Keyframes are arriving too far apart: Recalculate the GOP using the output frame rate. Set 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps for two seconds; verify that the encoder is actually producing that frame rate.
  • Bitrate fluctuates despite matching minimum, target, and maximum: Those FFmpeg controls express rate-control limits rather than a guarantee of constant network traffic. Check the chosen encoder’s behavior and build, validate the VBV buffer, and inspect YouTube’s stream health.
  • libx264 rejects CBR HRD settings: Confirm that vbv-bufsize is set through -bufsize. Do not use the documented libx264 HRD CBR signaling in an MP4 container; the example uses FLV output for RTMPS.
  • Audio is absent, distorted, or mismatched: Check the input audio stream and your AAC/MP3 codec, channel layout, and bitrate options. Include representative audio in the preflight test rather than testing video alone.
