If your car suddenly gets much louder, accelerates poorly, or has an unusually strong exhaust smell, a catalytic converter may have been cut out. Arrange an inspection rather than relying on a quick visual check. If theft is confirmed, report it, contact your insurer, and have a mechanic assess the damage; towing may be safer than driving with a damaged exhaust.

What to do if your catalytic converter is stolen

  1. Stop and assess whether the vehicle is safe to move. A much louder exhaust, reduced responsiveness, or strong exhaust odor can indicate a missing converter. Arrange a prompt inspection. Progressive recommends towing the vehicle to a mechanic; consider towing rather than driving an exhaust-damaged car. Progressive’s prevention guidance and its claim guidance discuss these warning signs and steps.
  2. Report the theft to law enforcement. Save the incident or case number. State Farm says an insurer may require a police report, while the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recommends contacting both law enforcement and the insurer. Ask your insurer what documentation it needs; requirements vary. See State Farm’s guidance and the NICB’s 2021 release.
  3. Document the damage when it is safe. Photograph the cut exhaust and surrounding damage before repairs. Contact your insurer before authorizing non-emergency work and ask whether it wants an inspection or estimate first.
  4. Get a written, itemized estimate. Ask the shop to identify the exact replacement converter required for your vehicle and location, and to include any damaged pipe, fittings, sensors, diagnostics, and labor. Emissions rules can restrict which replacement parts are legal.
  5. Compare the claim and repair options. Ask the insurer about the claim process, repair authorization, any transportation benefits, and whether it needs the police report. Compare the written estimate and likely insurer payment with your deductible before deciding how to proceed.

Does insurance cover catalytic converter theft?

Comprehensive auto coverage typically may cover theft of a catalytic converter and damage related to its removal. That is not a guarantee: the policy contract, exclusions, deductible, insurer, and state rules control. Check your declarations and policy or contact your insurer to confirm coverage for your specific loss. Progressive and State Farm both describe coverage as dependent on the policy and circumstances.

Your deductible can make a claim less useful when the repair estimate is close to or below that amount. NICB’s 2021 release notes that some drivers may choose not to claim when repair costs are close to the deductible. Ask your insurer how a claim would be handled, then compare your likely out-of-pocket costs rather than assuming that every theft should—or should not—be claimed.

How much does catalytic converter replacement cost?

There is no reliable single price for every vehicle. The total depends on the vehicle, converter type, parts availability, related exhaust damage, labor, diagnostics, and location. A component price is not the same as the full cost of repairing theft damage.

Figure What it describes Limit
$200–$2,500 Converter component price range cited by State Farm in 2025. Not a complete theft repair quote; State Farm says price varies by make and model, quality, and converter type.
$1,000–$3,000 NICB’s estimate in a 2021 news release for getting a vehicle fixed. Historical estimate, not a current or vehicle-specific quote.

California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair says replacement can cost thousands depending on make and model. These figures are useful context, not a substitute for a current written estimate for your vehicle. Ask the shop to itemize the converter, any cut or damaged exhaust components, affected sensors or fittings, labor, and diagnostics.

How to choose the correct replacement

Do not choose a converter solely because it is inexpensive or described as universal. The replacement must fit the vehicle and comply with the emissions rules where it is registered. Tell the shop the vehicle’s year, make, model, and location, and ask it to confirm the part’s eligibility before ordering.

California requirements

California has specific requirements that do not automatically apply elsewhere. The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) says a replacement must be an OEM converter or a CARB-approved aftermarket converter with an assigned Executive Order number that meets the exact requirements for that vehicle. Installation should be done at a licensed Smog Check station. BAR says the converter should be replaced as soon as possible and before the next Smog Check. Its official guidance includes an Auto Shop Locator; if the correct converter is on back order, BAR advises contacting the manufacturer or a Smog Check Referee. BAR also says California’s Consumer Assistance Program does not pay to replace a stolen converter.

Outside California, check your state’s emissions and replacement-part rules and use a shop familiar with local requirements. Do not assume that a part approved in one state is acceptable in another.

How to reduce the risk of another theft

Deterrents can make theft harder or less attractive, but none guarantees that a converter cannot be stolen. Choose measures that suit your vehicle and have a qualified shop confirm compatibility.

  • Consider a vehicle-specific shield, cage, plate, clamp, or strap. Check the year, make, and model fit and follow installation guidance. A barrier must not modify or damage the converter, obscure required identifying information, or be welded or attached directly to the converter. BAR recommends consulting a qualified installer.
  • Mark the converter. BAR and Progressive describe marking with a VIN or plate number; Progressive also mentions high-heat paint or labels. Marking may help identify a stolen part, but it does not physically prevent removal.
  • Consider an alarm. A vibration-sensitive alarm may alert you to tampering. Ask an installer whether it is suitable for your vehicle.
  • Choose safer parking where possible. Park in a garage or a well-lit, visible area when available. Parking choices can reduce opportunity, not eliminate risk.

For California-specific installation cautions and local shop-finding information, see BAR’s converter theft guidance. For additional prevention ideas, see Progressive’s overview.
