Before an agent generates a list endpoint, agree on the pagination contract: a deterministic total order, a cursor that captures the complete continuation boundary, stable request scope, explicit live-versus-snapshot behavior, and a defined invalid-token response. Cursor pagination can reduce the shifting positions associated with offsets, but it does not make multiple requests one frozen database snapshot.
What the team must decide before code generation
The team is preparing a newest-first list endpoint. The agent can write the query and response only after the product and engineering decisions that make its pages one coherent traversal are settled. Record these five invariants in the endpoint specification.
1. Order: define a total, deterministic order
A timestamp alone is not enough if multiple rows can share it. Add a unique tie-breaker so every row has an unambiguous place. For example, created_at DESC, id DESC is a common pattern when both fields are appropriate and stable. Symfony’s cursor-pagination documentation also demonstrates ordering by createdAt and id in descending order: Symfony Cursor pagination.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This example is a pattern, not a claim about the endpoint’s schema. The team must confirm the actual columns, null-handling rules, database behavior, and supporting indexes before implementation.

2. Boundary: make the cursor and query agree
The cursor must encode the complete ordered boundary, and the continuation predicate must implement the same order. If the order is composite, storing only the timestamp can fail when rows tie: the server needs the tie-breaker value to continue on the correct side of the boundary.
The exact comparison depends on sort direction and the selected database. Verify the predicate against the database and schema rather than copying a tuple comparison by assumption. A mismatch between ORDER BY and the seek predicate can skip rows or return rows again.
3. Scope: bind a cursor to the same logical feed
A continuation token should be valid only for the logical source and effective request context that created it: ordering, relevant filters, and tenant or authorization scope. Include implicit scope in the token context when it is not already represented by the query. Microsoft’s Data API Builder documentation describes continuation with an after value and notes that changes to schema or ordering can invalidate tokens: Use after (GraphQL) — Data API builder.

Keep this context stable for the feed’s lifetime. Do not derive it from the current page’s contents; ordinary additions or deletions would change that context and make an otherwise valid continuation unusable.
4. Consistency: state whether traversal is live or snapshot-based
Keyset pagination seeks from an ordered boundary instead of asking for a numbered offset. That can avoid pages shifting merely because rows were inserted or deleted before an offset. It does not promise that all requests see one point-in-time database state. Symfony states plainly: “It is not a database snapshot.”
For a live traversal, new data may appear while a client pages. Mutable order fields can move rows across the boundary, and an insert behind the current boundary can affect what remains. Prefer immutable ordering values when possible; a field such as updated_at can change during traversal.

If the product requires repeatable results—for example, an export that must represent one fixed view—choose snapshot isolation or an immutable feed key and design for it explicitly. Otherwise, document that the endpoint is a live traversal, not a frozen result set.
5. Failure contract: reject invalid cursors explicitly
Define what happens when a cursor is malformed, stale, signed with an old secret, or no longer compatible with the feed’s ordering or schema. Return a clear error. Do not silently restart at page one: the client may mistake repeated first-page items for a valid continuation. Tell the caller how to recover, such as making a fresh first-page request if it chooses to restart.
What the endpoint returns to clients
Keep the token opaque to clients: they should return it unchanged, not parse it or construct one. Opaque does not necessarily mean secret. Symfony documents authenticated but unencrypted tokens, so do not put sensitive values in a token on the assumption that encoding hides them.

Make the response’s continuation state clear. A page can contain its items, a next cursor or link, and an explicit signal for whether another page exists. Microsoft Data API Builder documents an after cursor with hasNextPage and endCursor; Zalando’s API guidelines describe pagination links such as prev and next.
Set a bounded page-size policy, with a default and maximum chosen for the product and workload. There is no universal value established by these sources. If reverse navigation is supported, specify its cursor and ordering behavior as deliberately as forward traversal.
Choose pagination behavior for the user’s need
| Choice | Best when | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor/keyset pagination | Collections are large or changing, and clients mainly need next/previous traversal. | Requires a stable total order and a token lifecycle contract; jumping directly to page N is awkward or unavailable in some designs. |
| Offset/page-number pagination | Users or clients need to jump to numbered pages and the dataset is manageable. | Inserts or deletes between requests can produce duplicate or missing entries; deep offsets can be less efficient on very large collections. |
| Live keyset traversal | New data may appear during paging and a best-effort boundary is acceptable. | It is not a fixed point-in-time result; mutable ordering values and inserts behind the boundary can change what remains. |
| Snapshot or immutable-feed traversal | The use case requires a repeatable view or reliable export semantics. | Requires additional database or feed design, with costs dependent on the implementation. |
These are separate decisions: cursor versus offset concerns how the client advances, while live versus snapshot concerns what consistency the product promises. A cursor can be used in a live traversal without providing snapshot semantics.

Review the contract before accepting generated code
- Does the order include a unique tie-breaker, and is it suitable for the endpoint’s data?
- Does the cursor carry every component of the ordered boundary?
- Does the continuation predicate match the full ordering and its direction?
- Are filters, tenant scope, authorization context, and order bound to the same logical feed?
- Does the API say whether pages reflect a live view or a fixed snapshot?
- Are invalid or stale cursors rejected clearly rather than silently reset?
- Can clients follow the returned continuation value without inspecting it?
- Are page-size bounds specified for the actual workload?
Also test ties at the boundary, concurrent inserts and deletes, changes to any mutable ordering field, and cursors reused with different filters or scope. Those cases expose contract mismatches that a simple first-page test will miss.
Why a database cursor example is not the same as an HTTP token
Microsoft’s Access database-cursor reference describes a different mechanism from an API continuation token. Its example discusses cursor membership and ordering alongside changing values and deletion holes; it should not be treated as a specification for HTTP pagination: Keyset cursors — Access desktop database reference. For an API, define token validity, request context, and continuation behavior in the endpoint contract itself.
