Short answer: an ordinary anonymous crawler will stop at a login wall. To preserve a page you are authorized to access, use either a browser capture that reuses your signed-in session cookies or an institutional crawl configured for a supported username-and-password form. Neither method works for every authentication system, and capturing a page does not automatically grant permission to share or replay it.
What changes when a page requires login?
A public URL is not necessarily a public document. When a site checks for an authenticated session, a fresh crawler usually receives the sign-in page, a consent wall, or an access-denied response instead of the requested content. The British Library explains that its crawling software cannot reach material behind a login without appropriate credentials. The Library of Congress says it does not archive password-protected content unless the site owner grants special permission.
Authentication and preservation are separate decisions. A service may be able to send credentials and collect HTML while still failing to replay scripts, images, or later navigation. An institution may accept a capture but restrict who can view it. Before you begin, confirm that you may access, store and—if relevant—share the material under your employer’s policy, the site’s terms and applicable privacy, copyright and contractual rules.

Method 1: capture one page with a signed-in browser session
This is the practical route when you need a page you can already view in a normal browser. WebsiteArchiver documents the following vendor-specific flow.

- Open the target in the service’s built-in browser. Navigate to the real page, not only the site’s login endpoint.
- Sign in normally. Complete consent prompts and any other steps required by the site. Do not paste credentials into an untrusted tool or export them for someone else.
- Enable saved-cookie use for the capture. The documented setting tells the application to apply the browser session’s stored cookies when it requests the page. The vendor says those cookies remain on the device; check the current product settings and policy yourself.
- Run the capture and inspect it. Verify that the result contains the intended account page, images and dynamic sections rather than a login form or an expired-session message.
- Store and share carefully. A capture can contain personal information and may remain sensitive even after the session expires. Keep it in an access-controlled location and share only with authorized recipients.
What this method does not prove
- One successful page capture does not establish that an entire site can be crawled.
- Saved cookies are session credentials. Anyone who obtains an active cookie may be able to act as the account until it expires or is revoked.
- Interactive behavior, client-side data and later pages may not replay exactly from a static capture.
Method 2: configure an institutional crawl with credentials
Archive-It documents credential-based collection for partners that need repeatable archival crawls. In most cases, seed the login page first, then enter the login name and password in the seed settings. After the crawl, use the Hosts report to check whether protected URLs were actually collected.
Supported pattern
The documented support is aimed at a conventional username-and-password form. It is not a general solution for modern identity systems. Archive-It lists two-step authentication, split login fields, password-only access, CAPTCHA and specialty certificates as unsupported.
Validate collection and replay
- Seed the site’s sign-in page and configure the credentials in the service’s protected settings.
- Run a limited test crawl before scheduling a large collection.
- Review the Hosts report for the authenticated URLs you expected.
- Open representative captures in replay. Some resources may have been collected but still fail to render or navigate correctly.
- Document who authorized the account, where credentials are stored and who may access the resulting collection.
Do not generalize Archive-It’s capability to every archive. The Library of Congress and UK Government Web Archive publish different policies, so check the specific institution before promising a login-protected capture.
Authentication cases that commonly fail
Two-step or passwordless identity
A one-time code, authenticator approval, security key or passwordless hand-off usually cannot be completed by a simple username/password crawler. Use an authorized interactive workflow or ask the site owner and archive provider about an approved integration.

CAPTCHA and bot challenges
CAPTCHAs intentionally distinguish human interaction from automation. Do not attempt to defeat them. If you have authority, request an export, a test account or an allowlisted archival process instead.
Split or unusual login forms
Some sites collect an organization ID, username and password on separate screens or use specialty certificates. Archive-It specifically excludes split-field logins and specialty certificates from its documented credential support.
Single-page applications
A page can appear captured while its data arrives later through authenticated API calls. Check images, tables, downloads and navigation in replay; a saved shell of the application is not the same as a faithful preservation of its data.

Troubleshooting login-protected captures
The result is the login page
Cause: credentials or session cookies were not applied, or the session expired. Fix: sign in again, explicitly enable saved-cookie use where supported, and capture a page that you can verify interactively first.

The page is blank or partly rendered
Cause: content loads after the initial response, requires an authenticated API call, or is blocked by a script error. Fix: wait for a specific selector or network idle, test a smaller page, and inspect replay rather than assuming the HTML response is complete.
The crawl collects URLs but replay fails
Cause: Archive-It warns that protected content may collect without replaying. Fix: test representative pages and dependent assets; preserve an approved export or alternate format when faithful replay is essential.
A CAPTCHA or two-step prompt stops the job
Cause: the authentication flow is outside documented username/password support. Fix: do not bypass the challenge. Ask the owner for an archival account, allowlist or export, or use an authorized interactive capture.

Cause: authenticated pages often contain account, customer or employee information. Fix: restrict storage and access, redact where authorized, revoke exposed sessions and never distribute cookie values.

Reliability, cost and operational choices
- For a one-off page: an interactive browser capture is usually easier to validate because you can see exactly what the account sees.
- For a collection: an institutional crawl provides scheduling and reporting, but authentication limitations and replay testing are part of the project, not optional cleanup.

- Confirm you are authorized to view and preserve the page.
- Check the site’s terms, employer policy and applicable privacy or contractual requirements.
- Decide whether the output is private evidence, an internal record or material intended for public release.
- Use a dedicated, least-privileged account where the owner permits it.
- Protect cookies, tokens, downloaded files and screenshots as sensitive data.
- Verify the capture itself—not merely a successful HTTP response—before relying on it.
FAQ
Can I save a page if I know the URL but not the password?
No. A URL alone does not cross an authentication boundary. You need authorized access, an owner-approved export or a permitted institutional workflow.
Will an archive preserve every feature after login?
No. Authentication may succeed while scripts, API responses, downloads or navigation fail during replay. Test the exact material you need.
Are cookies the same as a password?
They are different values, but an active session cookie can function like a credential. Protect it accordingly and revoke it if exposed.

Does a screenshot prove the underlying page was authentic?
It records what the capture process rendered at a particular time. Keep provenance—account, timestamp, URL and authorization records—if the image will support an audit or dispute.
