Capturing a system crash means collecting the right evidence for the failure you actually had: a Windows bug check, a Linux kernel panic, or an application that terminated on an Apple device. Configure capture before a failure where required, preserve the dump with its system and symbol details, and use a matching debugger. A dump can help narrow down a cause, but it is not automatically a root-cause verdict.

First identify what crashed

“System crash” can mean different things. A Windows bug check or Linux kernel panic is an operating-system failure; an Apple app crash report describes an application termination. These artifacts answer different questions and are not interchangeable.

Failure Artifact to collect Important distinction
Windows bug check or Stop error A configured Windows system crash dump The selected dump type determines what memory is captured; a complete dump contains more memory and has greater storage and I/O costs.
Linux kernel panic A kdump image, exposed in the capture environment as /proc/vmcore Capture depends on a prepared dump-capture kernel and reserved memory.
Apple app termination An app crash report, jetsam event report, or device console log, as appropriate A jetsam report describes memory-pressure conditions and does not include executing-thread stack traces. These app-focused reports are not a macOS kernel-panic dump workflow.

Capture a Windows bug-check dump

Configure capture before the failure

  1. Open System Properties, then open Startup and Recovery settings.
  2. Under the debugging information setting, choose the dump type appropriate to the diagnostic need: kernel, active, automatic, or complete.
  3. Review the configured dump path and the paging-file prerequisites for the selected type. Windows relies on suitable paging-file and recovery settings to write a dump.
  4. Apply the settings and restart so the configuration is in place before the next failure.

Windows calls a system crash a bug check or Stop error. The resulting dump records system memory at the time of the event, within the scope of the selected dump type.

Choose scope with storage and service impact in mind

Do not default to a complete dump. It captures more memory, but requires more storage and can involve long read/write periods that prolong a server outage. A kernel, active, or automatic dump may be the more proportionate choice; select based on what needs diagnosing and the available storage and recovery conditions. Microsoft advises treating manual kernel or complete dump generation as a last resort after standard troubleshooting, ideally when Microsoft Support explicitly requests it.

Preserve context and analyze the dump

Keep the dump with the bug-check code and parameters, Windows version and build, hardware details, and a record of recent driver or software changes. Windows kernel dumps are examined with Windows debugging tools such as WinDbg or KD. Matching the dump to its system context matters: the file alone may not explain which recent change or condition triggered the failure.

Use forced crashes only in controlled diagnostics

Microsoft describes ways to create a kernel dump by allowing a real crash, deliberately forcing a crash after configuring capture, or using a debugger without crashing. A forced crash is deliberate failure injection, not routine troubleshooting; it can interrupt service and should be used only in a controlled diagnostic situation.

Capture and analyze a Linux kernel panic

Prepare kdump in advance

Linux kdump uses kexec to start a separate dump-capture kernel after the system kernel crashes, while preserving the original kernel’s memory image. The capture kernel needs reserved memory, and the relevant architecture and kernel configuration affect setup. Because distributions differ in their tooling and defaults, follow instructions for the specific distribution and version rather than assuming one setup applies everywhere.

In the capture environment, the preserved image is exposed as /proc/vmcore. It can be copied locally or remotely, or filtered with makedumpfile. Plan storage and transfer access for the dump destination before relying on capture during an incident.

Use matching debug information for analysis

Analyze the image with a debug-symbol-bearing vmlinux that matches the crashed kernel, using GDB or the Crash utility. Reboot into a stable kernel before analysis. Without matching symbols, interpreting addresses and structures is less reliable.

WinDbg can also read Linux ELF core files and Linux compressed KDUMP files, but it is an optional cross-platform path rather than the canonical Linux workflow. Its documentation names ZLIB-compressed KDUMPs as supported and LZO- and Snappy-compressed KDUMPs as unsupported; Windows-specific debugger commands and extensions do not apply to Linux structures.

Read Apple crash reports as application evidence

Apple’s developer guidance for crash reports concerns app failures. A report describes how an app terminated and shows code running on each thread; exception details and backtraces can help identify common crash patterns. A fully symbolicated report is more useful, so developers need to retain the symbols and Xcode archive for the build that was distributed.

Distinguish reports, memory-pressure events, and logs

  • Crash report: records app termination and per-thread backtraces.
  • Jetsam event report: describes system memory conditions when an app was terminated; it does not include executing-thread stack traces.
  • Device console log: can provide context for some problems that are not app crashes.

If Xcode intercepts a crash and a full operating-system report is needed, Apple says to detach the debugger so the app can finish crashing and the operating system can generate the report. This app-report guidance does not establish how to capture or analyze a macOS system-level kernel panic.

Use the dump to form and test a diagnosis

Treat a dump as evidence about the system state at failure, not as proof that the first named component is the underlying cause. Preserve the original file and compare the failure details with recent driver, kernel, software, hardware, or workload changes. A repeatable pattern tied to a change is more useful than an isolated component name in a dump.

Deep kernel-dump troubleshooting can require programming and internal operating-system knowledge. If the evidence does not point to a clear next step, share the dump and its context through the appropriate vendor or organizational support path rather than making high-risk changes based on an uncertain interpretation. Microsoft’s advanced references include Advanced Windows Debugging, first edition.

Protect diagnostic files

Memory dumps and crash reports can contain sensitive diagnostic data. Restrict access, avoid posting them publicly, and transfer them only through an appropriate support channel. Apple specifically cautions developers against including privacy-sensitive information in logs.
