CaptureKit is a hosted screenshot API; Browsershot is a PHP package that renders pages through Puppeteer and headless Chrome. Choose CaptureKit when you want to send a URL to a managed endpoint without setting up the browser layer in your application. Choose Browsershot when your PHP application needs to render a URL, supplied HTML, or an HTML file through its own package workflow. The documentation establishes those different operating models, but does not establish which produces faster, more reliable, cheaper, or more visually faithful results for your workload.
CaptureKit vs Browsershot: the practical difference
| Question | CaptureKit | Browsershot |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A hosted screenshot endpoint authenticated with an API key. | A PHP package that uses Puppeteer running headless Google Chrome. |
| What input is documented? | A URL passed to the screenshot endpoint. | A URL, arbitrary HTML, or HTML loaded from a local file. |
| Who operates the browser layer? | The endpoint handles capture; its description says callers do not need headless setup. | Your application uses the Puppeteer and Chrome rendering basis documented by the package. |
| What control set is documented? | Image/PDF formats, device and viewport settings, full-page capture, selectors, waits, resource controls, caching, and optional storage. | The reviewed repository establishes input and rendering workflows, but not a full feature-by-feature comparison with CaptureKit. |
| What cost or performance comparison is established? | The endpoint documentation states one credit per call; current plan pricing and comparable workload costs are not established here. | No comparable total-cost or throughput figure is established here. |
Start with CaptureKit if your main need is URL-based capture and you prefer not to manage headless-browser setup in the caller. Start with Browsershot if your PHP application needs its documented URL or supplied-HTML workflows under package-level control. Check the current, version-specific documentation for any feature your production flow depends on.
What CaptureKit documents for screenshot workflows
CaptureKit’s Capture (Screenshot) API reference describes an endpoint that accepts an API key in the x-api-key header and a URL to capture. It documents PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, and PDF output, with PNG as the default. The endpoint page states a metering cost of one credit per call; that is not a plan price or a total-cost comparison.
Capture controls to check against your requirements
- Device emulation, viewport width and height, and scale factor.
- Full-page capture and scrolling options for lazy-loaded content.
- Element selection, selector removal, and ad removal.
- Wait conditions and an explicit delay.
- Resource and URL blocking.
- Proxy configuration, response caching, and optional S3-compatible storage.
- Output format selection, including PDF.
Parameter defaults and limits are described in the endpoint reference and may change. Confirm the current documentation before relying on a specific default or limit.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What Browsershot documents for HTML-to-image capture
Spatie’s Browsershot repository describes a PHP package that converts a page to an image or PDF using Puppeteer running headless Google Chrome. Its examples show three useful input paths: a URL, an HTML string, and a local HTML file. The repository also documents reading body HTML after JavaScript has run and collecting requests triggered by the page.
Those examples make Browsershot a natural candidate when HTML is generated inside a PHP application or stored locally, rather than already available at a public URL. The cited documentation establishes the available workflows, not output fidelity across pages or compatibility with every browser/runtime combination.

Choosing for a PHP or Laravel application
Choose a hosted API workflow when
- Your capture input is a URL that the endpoint can access.
- You prefer an API request over integrating and operating the documented headless-browser layer in your application.
- The documented controls cover your needs for viewport, output, waits, full-page capture, selectors, or resource blocking.
Choose Browsershot when
- You need the documented ability to pass arbitrary HTML or a local HTML file, not only a URL.
- Your application is PHP-based and package-level rendering through Puppeteer and headless Chrome suits your deployment approach.
- You want the documented PHP workflow for accessing page body HTML after JavaScript execution or collecting triggered requests.
For either choice, consider how your team will observe failures, handle retries, scale concurrent jobs, and maintain the runtime or API integration. The cited product documentation does not provide a neutral comparison of those operational outcomes.
How to compare them fairly before production
- Use representative pages. Include the real mix of static and JavaScript-rendered pages, long pages, and pages with the assets your workflow must capture.
- Match capture settings. Set the same target viewport, output format, full-page behavior, and any required wait condition where both products support the setting.
- Test your actual input path. Compare a URL in both tools; if your application supplies generated or local HTML, verify that workflow specifically in Browsershot.
- Record failures as well as successful images. Track timeouts, incomplete rendering, and other failures using your own acceptance criteria rather than assuming either tool handles them better.
- Measure your workload and costs. Use your expected concurrency and volume. CaptureKit’s documented one-credit-per-call statement alone does not establish plan cost, while the reviewed material does not establish comparable Browsershot operating costs or throughput.
- Document the test setup. If publishing or relying on a benchmark, record tool and runtime versions, target pages, output settings, repetitions, and the test date.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want a URL-based screenshot API, try ScreenshotNeo first: it removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; responses report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

The page is captured before it is ready
For CaptureKit, review the documented wait conditions and delay controls and confirm their current defaults. For Browsershot, make sure your chosen page or supplied HTML has reached the state your application intends to capture; the repository documents JavaScript-aware workflows, but does not establish a universal wait strategy for every site.
The output omits below-the-fold content
Check whether full-page capture is enabled and, for CaptureKit, whether its documented scrolling options for lazy-loaded content fit the page. A full-page setting cannot guarantee that every site loads all content, so validate pages that defer images or other resources.

A desired Browsershot option is not apparent from the repository examples
The examples establish input modes and selected capabilities, not a complete feature matrix. Check the package’s current documentation for the exact option and version you need rather than inferring that an undocumented CaptureKit control has a direct equivalent.
Cost, performance, and reliability: what can be concluded
CaptureKit’s endpoint documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, states one credit per call. Current plan prices, quotas, overage terms, and geographic availability are not established by that statement. The reviewed Browsershot material does not provide a comparable total-cost figure. Nor do these official materials establish a workload-matched comparison of speed, reliability, throughput, or visual fidelity. Decide those questions with a test on your own representative pages and deployment constraints.
