Selenium returns the screenshot as a Java byte[] instead of writing it to a file or returning base64 text.
Capture the screenshot as a byte array
Run this after the driver has navigated to the page you want to capture:

Here is the capture call in context. It assumes your project already has Selenium configured and a compatible browser driver available:

}Replace the example URL with the page to capture. Keep the screenshot call before driver.quit(), because it operates on the active browser session. The example reports the byte-array length as a basic check that data was returned; it does not validate image contents.

Use BYTES for a byte array; do not base64-decode the result or read a temporary file unless you deliberately chose a different output type.

What part of the page does Selenium capture?
The screenshot operation captures the current browsing context. Do not assume it always produces a full-page screenshot: behavior depends on the WebDriver implementation. For W3C-conformant implementations, screenshot behavior follows the WebDriver specification; a nonconformant implementation may make a best effort that captures the whole page, the current window, the visible portion of a frame, or even the display containing the browser.
If you need a particular capture area—especially a full-page image—verify the behavior for your browser and driver rather than relying on this byte-array call to extend the capture beyond what that implementation supports. The output type determines how screenshot data is returned; it does not change the capture scope.

Handle capture failures
Selenium’s screenshot method can throw WebDriverException. Decide how your application should log, report, or retry such failures; Selenium does not prescribe a retry policy.
- The cast fails: The active driver does not expose
TakesScreenshot. Use a compatible WebDriver implementation. - The screenshot call throws: The browser session or capture operation failed. Check the exception and session state, and apply the error handling appropriate to your application.
- The captured area is unexpected: Check the screenshot behavior of the browser and driver in use. The method does not guarantee a full-page capture across implementations.
- You expected a file or base64 value: You requested raw bytes. Choose
OutputType.FILEorOutputType.BASE64only if that representation suits the next step.
