To capture Tamil text correctly with Go chromedp, install a Tamil-capable font in the same host or container that runs Chrome or Chromium, then navigate to the page and take an element, viewport, or full-page screenshot. The Ubuntu fonts-noto-core package is one option; its Jammy file manifest includes Noto Sans Tamil regular and bold. The right installation command depends on your operating system and release.
Install Tamil fonts where Chromium runs
Chrome can only use fonts available in its runtime environment. A font installed on your workstation will not automatically be available to Chromium running in a CI worker or container. Install and verify the font in the environment that launches the browser.
Ubuntu option: Noto Sans Tamil
Ubuntu’s fonts-noto-core package is a broad Unicode font package; the Jammy package manifest lists NotoSansTamil-Regular.ttf and NotoSansTamil-Bold.ttf. See the Ubuntu Jammy file manifest and package information. Use the package manager and package name appropriate to the actual distribution and release where Chromium runs; do not assume an Ubuntu command applies to every image.
After installation, inspect the available fonts in that same runtime and capture the page there. The package manifest confirms those font files are included, but cannot guarantee that a particular website’s CSS selects them or that its final Tamil layout will look as intended.

Containers and headless execution
Chromedp controls Chrome or Chromium through the Chrome DevTools Protocol, and the browser executable must be available to the Go process. It runs Chrome in headless mode by default. The chromedp README identifies chromedp/headless-shell as a straightforward headless option; choose and pin an image version suitable for your environment rather than assuming one tag is universally correct. Install the font package in that image, not just on the host that builds the Go binary. See the chromedp project README.
Choose the screenshot bounds
| Action | What it captures | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
chromedp.Screenshot |
A selected DOM element | You need a particular element rather than the whole page. |
chromedp.CaptureScreenshot |
The current browser viewport | You need only what is visible in the viewport. |
chromedp.FullScreenshot |
The page beyond the viewport | You need a full-page image. |
The API documents FullScreenshot as capturing beyond the viewport. With quality set to 100, it returns PNG; other values in its documented 0–100 range select JPEG. See the chromedp API documentation. The upstream examples demonstrate element and full-page captures, but do not establish that every site or Tamil font stack will render identically.

Capture a full-page screenshot in Go
Add chromedp to the project with go get github.com/chromedp/chromedp. The browser itself must also be installed or otherwise available in the execution environment. This example follows the upstream context, navigation, screenshot, and file-writing pattern; replace the URL with the page you need to capture.

func main() {
ctx, cancel := chromedp.NewContext(context.Background())
defer cancel()
var image []byte
err := chromedp.Run(ctx,
chromedp.Navigate("https://example.com"),
chromedp.FullScreenshot(&image, 100),
)
if err != nil {
log.Fatal(err)
}
if err := os.WriteFile("page.png", image, 0644); err != nil {

}
}
For a viewport screenshot, replace the full-page action with chromedp.CaptureScreenshot(&image). To capture a selected element, use chromedp.Screenshot with the relevant chromedp node selection. The upstream examples show the element and full-page action patterns.

Wait for the content you need
Navigation completion is not a universal signal that dynamic content or web-loaded fonts are ready. If the target page inserts Tamil text asynchronously, waits on a selector or another page-specific readiness condition before capturing. There is no single selector or delay that is reliable for every site; inspect the target page and choose a condition that represents the content you want in the image.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its capture flow can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The font still needs to be available in the browser environment used for capture if the page relies on local fallback fonts.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect Tamil text
- Glyphs appear as boxes or missing characters: Confirm a Tamil-capable font is installed in the same runtime as Chromium, then verify the page capture there. A workstation font does not prove that a separate container has it.
- The font package appears installed but the page still looks wrong: Check the website’s CSS font stack and the browser runtime’s available fonts. The Ubuntu manifest establishes the package’s files, not which font a website will choose.
- Text or layout is absent from the image: The page may not have finished rendering when the screenshot action ran. Wait for a page-specific selector or readiness condition before capture.
- Chromedp cannot start the browser: Ensure Chrome or Chromium is available to the process and that the chosen execution environment supports the intended headless setup. The chromedp README describes headless mode and headless-shell, but does not prescribe one universally correct image tag.
- The image ends at the viewport: Use
chromedp.FullScreenshotfor a full-page capture; viewport capture and full-page capture have different bounds. - The output is JPEG instead of PNG: For
FullScreenshot, set quality to 100 for PNG. Other documented quality values select JPEG.
Check the result in the target runtime
Font availability, browser version, operating-system packages, and page behavior can vary between local development and deployment. Run the capture in the same environment that will produce the final image, and inspect the actual output for Tamil glyphs, page completeness, and the intended capture bounds.
