To stop nodes overlapping without making a graph harder to read, separate collision detection from collision resolution. Detect intersections using each node’s actual rectangular bounds, optionally expanded by a visual gap. Then resolve them with a layout policy that limits unnecessary movement and preserves graph structure. For hand-arranged graphs, make that change an explicit, reversible user action rather than silently moving nodes.

How to detect an overlap between nodes

Represent each node by an axis-aligned bounding box (AABB), using its current layout dimensions. If a node’s bounds run from left to right and top to bottom, two boxes overlap when their horizontal intervals and their vertical intervals both intersect.

overlap = A.left < B.right
       && A.right > B.left
       && A.top < B.bottom
       && A.bottom > B.top

These strict comparisons treat edge contact as non-overlap: boxes that only touch have no positive-area intersection. If touching edges should count as a collision, use inclusive comparisons instead. Choose one convention and apply it consistently to detection, previews, and resolution.

Choose bounds that match what users see

Use dimensions for the node’s current state, including expanded or collapsed states when those change its size. Decide explicitly whether labels, ports, shadows, or selection outlines reserve space. If visual spacing and interactive hitboxes disagree, a node may appear clear of its neighbor while still colliding during interaction—or appear to collide when it does not.

Reserve a visual gap

To test for a breathing margin, expand both boxes by half the desired gap on each side, or expand one box by the full gap. Keep the convention consistent so the resulting separation is predictable. There is no universally established ergonomic gap for node editors; choose a value suited to your design and validate it with representative graphs.

Handle large graphs efficiently

Checking every pair of nodes is simple, but the number of candidate pairs grows quadratically with node count. For larger or frequently updated graphs, a spatial index or sweep-based broad phase can narrow the candidates before exact AABB tests. This is an engineering option, not a measured performance recommendation for node-editor canvases.

How to resolve collisions without damaging the layout

Finding an intersection does not determine where either node should go. Resolution is a layout decision: a method that removes every overlap may still make the graph less readable by changing its order, widening its footprint, or moving a carefully positioned node.

Compare methods by their effects

Graphviz documents several configurable overlap-removal methods, including Prism/proximity-based handling, Voronoi, scaling variants, and VPSC-style approaches. Their behavior and trade-offs depend on the layout engine and options; these are examples of distinct methods, not a guarantee that one will suit every editor. A comparative study likewise treats overlap removal as a choice among algorithms and quality criteria rather than identifying a universal winner (Node Overlap Removal Algorithms: A Comparative Study).

Resolution approach What to assess
Pairwise push-apart Easy to implement, but repeated pushes can cause jitter, oscillation, changes in node order, or substantial displacement.
Constraint-based separation Can express spacing and ordering constraints; assess whether the result preserves anchors and important relationships.
Proximity-based post-processing Separates nearby nodes after layout; assess whether the resulting movement disrupts ranks, clusters, or edge routing.
Uniform scaling Can create separation by enlarging the layout; assess the added footprint and aspect-ratio consequences.
Force-directed repositioning Can redistribute nodes globally; assess movement, stability between runs, and whether it retains intentional positions.

Graphviz’s overlap reference describes its available overlap options and trade-offs; its neato documentation lists related layout attributes. Those references describe Graphviz behavior, not a prescribed policy for every node editor.

Decide what “better” means for this editor

  • Movement: How far do nodes move in total, and can selected or pinned nodes act as anchors?
  • Structure: Are edge direction, ranks, relative ordering, and clusters still easy to follow?
  • Density: Does the graph stay compact, or does resolving overlap create excessive empty space?
  • Stability: Do repeated runs or small edits cause nodes to jump unexpectedly?
  • Runtime: Does detection and resolution remain responsive as the graph grows?
  • User control: Can users preview, reverse, and limit the operation to selected nodes or a larger region?

When to move nodes automatically

For hand-positioned graphs

Prefer an explicit command such as “Resolve overlaps” or “Tidy layout.” Preserve pinned nodes where practical, and consider previewing substantial changes before applying them. Keep the operation undoable. This reduces the risk that a helpful collision pass will overwrite intentional placement without warning.

For generated layouts

Overlap handling can be part of the layout stage, where positions are already being computed. Keep the separation policy aligned with the layout’s purpose: for example, preserving a left-to-right flow may matter more than minimizing total graph area. NetworkX documents positioning algorithms such as BFS, spring, and circular layouts, but choosing a positioning algorithm alone does not guarantee overlap removal (NetworkX Drawing documentation).

After applying a move

Update edge routing and hit-testing from the new node geometry, and record the changes so users can undo them. Otherwise, the canvas can display one arrangement while its connectors or interactions still behave as if the nodes were elsewhere.

Make spacing and organization usable on the canvas

Choose the coordinate space deliberately

A fixed world-space gap becomes smaller on screen as users zoom out. A screen-space gap requires scale-aware conversion as zoom changes. Decide which behavior matches the editor’s intent, and keep collision tests and visual feedback consistent with that choice.

Pair collision handling with local organization tools

Overlap removal is only one way to make a graph easier to work with. Apple’s Reality Composer Pro documentation describes Zoom Fit, Align, and Distribute. Autodesk Maya’s Maya 2025 nodeEditor command documentation covers layout, framing, view scaling, grid, and node-management controls. These are examples of available editor affordances, not evidence that one set of controls is more usable than another.

The Working Group Canvas align and distribute documentation describes world-space AABB handling for alignment, including rotated nodes, and distribution behavior. It is implementation documentation, not an ergonomic standard.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The cited documentation and comparative study support treating overlap removal as a configurable layout problem with multiple possible trade-offs. They do not establish a universal numeric padding value or a measured usability benefit specific to AABB collision avoidance in node editors. Test the chosen spacing and movement policy on representative graphs and with the people who use the editor; do not present a local design choice as an industry-wide standard.
