In OpenAI’s Images API, the field accepts transparent, opaque, or auto (the default). A reliable transparent-asset workflow also requires a model that currently supports transparency, PNG or WebP output, and a file-level alpha-channel check after decoding.
What the background parameter actually controls
A prompt such as “place the logo on a transparent background” describes an intention in natural language. The API field is the machine-readable output control. OpenAI documents three values:

These are enum values, not arbitrary text. The official OpenAI API reference and Python SDK parameter type list the same three choices. Behavior is model-dependent; verify the live model reference on the date you deploy (this article was checked September 29, 2026), because some transparency support is marked preview.
How to request a genuinely transparent image
- Select a supported model. OpenAI’s reference limits transparent output to supported GPT Image models. Do not assume every image model or version accepts it; check the current model documentation and preview status.
- Set
background="transparent"explicitly. Do not rely on a sentence in the prompt to switch the canvas mode. - Request a format that stores alpha. OpenAI’s image-generation guidance says to use PNG or WebP for transparency. In the GPT Image 2 workflow described there, JPEG is unsupported with transparent backgrounds.
- Decode and inspect the returned bytes. A preview can show a checkerboard that is actually painted into the image. Read the file’s alpha channel instead.

print("Transparency is present in the decoded file")Some SDK or API revisions expose the generated data differently. Keep the important checks unchanged: explicitly set the background, choose PNG or WebP, decode the returned content, and inspect alpha.
cURL pattern
When using the HTTP endpoint directly, send the same controls in JSON. The response for GPT Image models is commonly base64 image data; decode it before opening the file.

A model may understand a transparent-background request while the selected file format cannot carry alpha. PNG and WebP have an alpha channel; JPEG does not. Conversely, selecting PNG does not make an unsupported model produce transparency. Treat model capability and encoding capability as two independent gates.

For transparent assets, it specifically directs users to PNG or WebP. If your pipeline converts WebP or PNG to JPEG later, transparency is lost at that conversion step.

How to verify alpha instead of trusting a preview
Open the decoded file with an image library and inspect channel data. An alpha range of 255..255 means every pixel is opaque. A minimum below 255 proves that at least some pixels are partially or fully transparent. For production checks, also inspect:
- outer corners and the full canvas border;
- soft antialiased edges around the subject;
- hair, fur, glass and other translucent details;
- shadows, glows and semi-transparent reflections.
A checkerboard pattern visible in an editor is only a display convention. If pixel sampling finds colored squares, the checkerboard was drawn into the image and is not transparency.
Choosing between transparent, opaque, and auto
Choose transparent for compositing
Use it for logos, stickers, product cutouts, game sprites and UI assets that will sit over multiple backgrounds. Plan for edge inspection because semi-transparent pixels can reveal halos when placed over dark or saturated colors.

Choose opaque for finished scenes
Use it when the background is part of the composition: a landscape, editorial illustration or advertising scene that will be delivered as one rectangular image.
Choose auto when delegation is acceptable
auto lets the model determine the background treatment. It does not promise white, black or any other specific color, so do not use it when downstream compositing requires alpha.

Other output controls that affect the result
Background is only one output decision. OpenAI’s image-generation tool documentation also exposes size, quality, format, compression and action controls. Select them from the asset’s requirements:
- Size: match the intended display or print dimensions; larger images can increase processing and storage costs.
- Quality: compare supported quality levels against the detail requirement and latency budget.
- Format and compression: preserve alpha with PNG or WebP; use compression only after checking edge quality and file size.
- Action/workflow: use the Image API or the documented Responses API path appropriate to your application.
When comparing background behavior, hold prompt, input images, size and quality constant, change only the background value, then inspect the decoded files. This isolates the setting without mistaking a quality or model change for a background effect.

The response is rejected for an invalid background value
Use exactly transparent, opaque or auto. Do not send “clear,” “none” or a color name in this field.
The image has a solid background despite transparent
Confirm that the selected model currently supports transparency, including any preview qualification. Confirm that the request actually reached the intended model and that no later image-processing step flattened the alpha channel.
The file opens but has no alpha
Check the requested format. JPEG cannot carry transparency in the GPT Image 2 workflow documented by OpenAI. Request PNG or WebP, then decode and test the alpha channel.

A checkerboard appears in the final asset
Inspect pixel values. If the checkerboard colors exist in the file, regenerate with explicit transparency; the model produced a visual imitation rather than transparent pixels.

Edges show a halo
Inspect at 100% and against both light and dark backgrounds. Semi-transparent edge pixels may contain colors from the generation context. Try a simpler prompt, remove unwanted shadow instructions, and validate the resulting alpha rather than judging only a thumbnail.
The SDK response shape differs
Pin and review your SDK version, then follow its current image-result type. Regardless of syntax, preserve the four-step contract: supported model, explicit parameter, alpha-capable format and decoded-file validation.

Can I guarantee a particular color with auto?
No. auto delegates the decision to the model; request an opaque image and describe a color when a colored canvas is required, then inspect the result.
Does transparency survive every image conversion?
No. Converting to a format without alpha, such as JPEG, flattens transparent pixels. Validate after every conversion stage.
