For a driver, check Windows Update’s optional driver updates before downloading a package from the PC or device maker. The right next step depends on whether Windows Update or a specific device is failing—and on the error code.
First, identify what is failing
Before changing settings or removing a driver, note the exact Windows Update error code or Device Manager error code. Also record whether the problem is a Windows update or a driver for a particular device, the device name, and the PC or device manufacturer and model. These details determine which troubleshooting instructions and driver package apply; a driver with a similar name is not necessarily compatible.
Check that the PC is online, has enough free storage, and can restart. Microsoft lists causes such as incomplete update data, stopped services, access problems, insufficient storage, interrupted downloads, and incompatible drivers, so do not apply a fix for a different error code without a reason. Run the Windows 11 Update troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft says it checks for common problems and attempts to fix them. See Windows Update Troubleshooter.
- If the issue remains, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Windows Update.
- Restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, then check for updates again.
For the ordinary update check, use Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Microsoft’s Install Windows Updates guide describes the standard update process.

If a device driver will not update or install
Check Windows Update first
Open Settings > Windows Update and look for available optional driver updates. Windows 11 delivers recommended drivers through Windows Update, and optional driver updates may be listed there when available. Microsoft explains the available routes in Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.
Get an unavailable driver from its maker
If Windows Update does not offer the driver or its installation fails, identify the exact device and find its support page at the PC maker’s or device maker’s official website. Choose a package explicitly compatible with your PC or hardware and Windows version. If Device Manager shows an error code, use it to narrow down the problem; Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guide explains the code-specific routes.

Avoid installing a package just because its name resembles the device. Compatibility depends on the specific hardware and Windows version, and the information here cannot identify the correct package without those details.
If Windows Update reports 0xC1900101
Microsoft associates error 0xC1900101 with a possible incompatible driver. Treat that as a lead, not proof of which driver is responsible. Microsoft suggests reviewing network or graphics drivers and lists trying a clean boot among its troubleshooting steps. Follow the PC or device maker’s guidance before uninstalling a driver, and use the exact error-code instructions in Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guide.

If Windows system files may be damaged
If the error-specific steps and troubleshooter do not resolve the update problem, damaged or missing Windows components may need repair. Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker (SFC) for this purpose. DISM normally gets repair files through Windows Update; if that client is broken, Microsoft describes using a suitable Windows installation or side-by-side folder on removable or network media as an alternate source.
Back up important personal files before moving on to these repair steps. Follow Microsoft’s current command order and syntax in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. A USB drive can be useful for a personal-file backup or, where appropriate, repair files; it does not itself fix the update or driver failure.

When you still cannot install an update or driver
- Keep the exact error code, device name, and PC or device model handy.
- Use Microsoft’s instructions for the specific Windows Update or Device Manager code rather than repeating unrelated fixes.
- For a device driver, use the official PC or hardware maker’s support page and confirm compatibility with the exact model and Windows version.
- If the cause is still unclear, those details are needed to distinguish a Windows Update issue from a device-specific problem; the title alone is not enough to diagnose a particular PC.
