If Feather Client will not let you sign in, first check whether you are still using the old launcher. Feather is being replaced by Dawn, formerly Feather Client. The official Feather website now directs users to Dawn, so installing and testing the current Dawn launcher is a better first step than repeatedly repairing an obsolete Feather installation.
The sign-in problem can occur at several different points: Microsoft account authentication, the browser handoff back to the launcher, Minecraft Java license verification, or Windows account matching. Use the section that matches what you see on screen.
1. Install Dawn before troubleshooting the old Feather launcher
As of June 25, 2026, Feather is migrating to Dawn following InPvP’s acquisition of Feather. The migration is intended to preserve accounts, cosmetics, instances, mods, and settings.

The page currently lists Windows as available; macOS Apple Silicon and Linux are marked “Soon.” You can also wait for an existing Feather installation to migrate automatically, but a direct Dawn installation is the more useful test when login is failing.

Do not download a replacement launcher from a random mirror or enter your Microsoft password into a form supplied through Discord or another third party. The password should be entered only on Microsoft’s own sign-in page.
2. Confirm that the Microsoft account owns Minecraft Java Edition
Feather and Dawn do not use a separate Feather account. They authenticate a Microsoft/Xbox account, and that account must have access to Minecraft: Java Edition through a purchase or an eligible Game Pass entitlement.
Being able to sign in to Outlook or Microsoft.com does not prove that the account owns Minecraft. Microsoft account authentication and Minecraft license entitlement are separate checks.

Verify ownership using one of these methods:
- Find the Minecraft purchase-confirmation email and check which Microsoft account received it.
- Sign in to the relevant Microsoft account and open its Order history. Look for the Minecraft purchase.
- If you use Game Pass, confirm that the subscription is active and that it includes the required Minecraft entitlement.
If the purchase belongs to a different Microsoft account, sign out of the account currently selected during login and choose the account that owns the game.
3. Identify where the sign-in process fails

4. If Microsoft sign-in fails outside Feather or Dawn
Try signing in directly through Microsoft’s website. If Microsoft rejects the account there, the launcher cannot repair the problem. Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper and complete any recovery or security steps it provides.
Microsoft’s documented causes of Error 400 include repeated sign-in attempts and problems with the browser, app, device, or network. Test the following:

- Wait a short time if you have made many repeated login attempts.
- Try another browser or device.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to a mobile hotspot, or use another network.
- Update the browser and operating system.
- Try another available Microsoft sign-in method, such as a security code.
- Reinstall or update the affected launcher only after confirming the account itself works.
If Microsoft login works normally in a browser but not in Dawn, continue with the launcher and entitlement checks below.
5. Fix the contextID cookie error
The message server_error: The contextID supplied in the request did not have a matching cookie points to a failed or mismatched web authentication session. It does not, by itself, prove that your Minecraft username or password is wrong.
Use this order:
- Close Feather or Dawn completely. Check Task Manager if the process remains open.
- Sign out of Microsoft accounts in the browser used by the authentication window.
- Start the login again in a private or incognito browser window if the launcher opens an external browser.
- Clear Microsoft login cookies and cached data if the error returns.
- Temporarily disable browser extensions, privacy tools, cookie blockers, and strict tracking protection.
- Retry on another network if the browser login still loops or fails.
VPNs, firewalls, DNS filters, and security software can interfere with redirects or cookie handling. Disabling one temporarily is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed permanent fix. Re-enable protection after testing and add a proper application exception if necessary.
6. Check Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts on Windows
On Windows, Minecraft’s license validation can involve the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and Minecraft Launcher. Microsoft recommends using the same Minecraft-owning Microsoft account across those services.
Check each location:
- Open Microsoft Store and inspect the account icon in the upper-right corner.
- Open the Xbox app and inspect the account shown in the upper-left corner.
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher, if installed, and inspect the account shown in the upper-left corner.
If one application is using a different account, sign out and sign in with the account that owns Minecraft Java Edition. This mismatch can produce an authentication or license error even when the Microsoft password is accepted successfully.
Signing in to the Xbox app first can sometimes resolve an account handoff problem, but it is not established that the official Minecraft Launcher must always be installed or logged in for Dawn to work.

7. Resolve generic authentication errors
Messages such as MS auth failed, Minecraft auth failed, and authentication failed are too broad to identify one cause. Check these items in order:
- Confirm Microsoft sign-in works in a browser.
- Confirm that the selected account owns Minecraft Java Edition.
- Check the Microsoft Store and Xbox app for an account mismatch.
- Confirm that a Game Pass entitlement has not expired.
- Check whether a child or family account has restrictions affecting Xbox or Minecraft services.
- Install and test Dawn rather than relying on an old Feather build.
- Retry with a clean launcher attempt and, if possible, a different network.
A child account may authenticate successfully but still lack permission for Minecraft multiplayer or related Xbox features. The family organizer may need to review Microsoft Family Safety settings and enable the required multiplayer permissions.
8. Do not try the outdated Mojang migration fix
Advice to “migrate your Mojang account” is no longer current. Minecraft ended Mojang-account migration on December 18, 2023, and Minecraft Support says migration-related support is no longer available.

An unmigrated Mojang account cannot be repaired by starting a new migration from Feather or Dawn. Use the Microsoft account that already owns Minecraft, or purchase Minecraft for the intended Microsoft account if no entitlement exists.
9. Avoid deleting the Minecraft folder as a first fix
Deleting .minecraft does not correct a missing license, wrong Microsoft account, failed browser cookie session, family restriction, or authentication outage. It can also remove local worlds, screenshots, resource packs, configurations, mod files, and instance data.
Reinstalling a damaged launcher can be reasonable, but first verify the account and license. If you replace Feather with Dawn, back up important local files before changing installations, especially if your instances or settings have not yet migrated.

10. Contact Dawn support when the account checks pass
Use the official Dawn support page when all of the following are true:
- Microsoft sign-in works in a browser.
- The selected Microsoft account owns Minecraft Java Edition.
- The Microsoft Store and Xbox app use the same account on Windows.
- You have retried the current Dawn launcher and the authentication session.
- The problem continues or the error specifically indicates a launcher-side failure.
Dawn’s support page provides Submit a ticket, My tickets, and official Discord support. Include the exact error text, Windows version, Dawn version, whether browser Microsoft login works, whether the account owns Minecraft, and what troubleshooting you already tried.
Never send support staff your Microsoft password, recovery code, session token, or complete authentication URL.

Does Feather Client still work?
Feather is being migrated to Dawn, and the official Feather website now directs users to Dawn. Install the current Dawn launcher from dawn.gg/download before spending time repairing an old Feather installation.
Do I need a separate Feather or Dawn account?
No. Sign-in uses a Microsoft/Xbox account. That account must also own Minecraft Java Edition or have an eligible active entitlement.

Why can I sign in to Microsoft but not Feather or Dawn?
A successful Microsoft password check is only one part of the process. The launcher must receive the browser authentication result, store its tokens, and verify Minecraft ownership. A wrong account, blocked cookies, an account mismatch in Windows, or a missing entitlement can still stop the login.

What does the contextID cookie error mean?
It generally means the Microsoft web authentication session lost or failed to match a required cookie. Close the launcher, sign out of Microsoft in the browser, retry privately, and clear Microsoft cookies if necessary.
Can migrating my old Mojang account fix the problem?
