A canonicalization warning in Moz is a prompt to inspect a URL—not proof that Google has indexed the wrong page. Compare what Moz crawled with the WordPress page’s actual HTML and redirects, then decide whether the URL should remain available, redirect, or declare another page as its canonical.
What a canonicalization warning means
A canonical URL is the preferred representative of duplicate or very similar pages. A page can declare that preference with an HTML rel="canonical" link, but Google treats the declaration as a hint, not a command; Google selects its own representative based on signals it collects. See Google’s canonicalization guidance.
Moz Site Crawl records information found during its crawl, including the canonical URL in a page’s source. That observation does not establish which URL Google selected or indexed. Moz describes the field in its crawled-page documentation.
There are three separate things to check: the canonical link in the served HTML, any HTTP redirect from the requested URL, and Google’s independent canonical selection. They can agree—or conflict.

Start with the exact Moz report row
- In Moz Site Crawl, open the affected page and record its exact URL, issue label, reported canonical URL (if shown), and crawl date.
- Group affected URLs by pattern: for example, posts, category or tag archives, paginated pages, query parameters, HTTP versus HTTPS, www versus non-www, trailing slashes, or custom routes.
- Choose representative URLs from each pattern and inspect them before making a sitewide change. A repeated pattern can point to a shared template, plugin, setting, rewrite, or proxy rule, but the report alone does not identify the cause.
Inspect what the site actually serves
Check the requested URL and its final destination. Use browser developer tools or an HTTP inspection tool to follow the full redirect chain; a browser address bar shows only the final URL and can hide intermediate redirects.
- Check the response: note the status code and every redirect destination, from the original URL through the final page.
- Check the HTML source: find each
<link rel="canonical">. Confirm there is one intended canonical, that its URL is absolute, and that it uses the desired protocol, hostname, path, letter case, and trailing-slash convention. - Check the target: the canonical destination should resolve to the intended page rather than redirect elsewhere or point back through a loop.
- Check rendered output: compare source HTML with the rendered DOM if JavaScript may alter the canonical. Consider what Moz and search engines can actually see.
- Check supporting signals: review whether robots rules or a noindex directive, internal links, and the XML sitemap align with the intended URL.
Do not infer that a canonical is missing or wrong from the issue label alone; verify the page source. WordPress core documents rel_canonical() as outputting a canonical for singular queries, so archive, custom-route, plugin, or theme behavior can differ. See the WordPress function reference.

Separate WordPress canonical links from redirects
Canonical links generated by WordPress
WordPress documents wp_get_canonical_url() as returning the canonical URL for a published post. Its behavior accounts for pagination arguments when constructing the current requested page’s URL. The core rel_canonical() function uses it for singular queries. See the function reference and rel_canonical() reference.
The actual HTML on a live site may also be affected by an SEO plugin, theme, custom code, filters, or caching. Inspect the served response rather than assuming core behavior is the only behavior in effect.

Redirects performed by WordPress
redirect_canonical() handles URL normalization redirects based on the site URL. WordPress describes it as redirecting incoming links to the proper URL; its examples include www and non-www variants. This HTTP redirect is distinct from an HTML canonical link. See WordPress’s redirect_canonical() documentation.
Review WordPress Address and Site Address settings, permalink settings, HTTPS or proxy configuration, and the active plugin and theme. Test the resulting HTML and redirects before changing PHP or server rules. WordPress provides a redirect_canonical filter, and returning false cancels the redirect; that is a mechanism for a narrowly justified case, not a routine canonical repair. See the filter reference.

Compare the signals pointing to the preferred URL
When choosing the intended representative, check whether the site sends a consistent message across these signals. Google may combine them, and they do not carry equal weight:
| Signal | What to check | How Google describes it |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP redirect | Does the duplicate URL redirect to the intended destination? | Strong signal toward the redirect target |
HTML rel="canonical" |
Does the duplicate page declare the intended equivalent page? | Strong signal toward the declared target |
| XML sitemap | Does the sitemap list the preferred URL rather than a variant? | Weak signal toward listed URLs |
| Internal links | Do site links consistently use the preferred version? | Check for consistency with the other signals |
Google’s documentation covers consolidating duplicate URLs and canonicalization signals. Do not use noindex as a way to select one canonical among duplicate pages on the same site: it changes indexing eligibility rather than expressing a canonical preference.

Choose a fix based on the URL’s purpose
| Situation | Appropriate action | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| The old URL is an accidental duplicate and should no longer be independently reachable | Use a permanent redirect to the preferred URL. | Update internal links and sitemap entries to use the destination; check that the redirect chain ends there. |
| The duplicate URL must remain accessible | Keep it available and declare the equivalent preferred page with a canonical link. | Ensure the destination is appropriate and signals do not conflict or loop. |
| The page serves a distinct purpose or has materially different content | Do not canonicalize it away solely because Moz reports similarity. | Assess whether it belongs in the same duplicate set and serves a separate user need. |
| The URL is a tag, pagination, filter, or language/region variant | Check what the URL does before redirecting or canonicalizing it. | Determine whether users need it as an independent page and whether its content is equivalent enough to consolidate. |
Google identifies protocol, device, region, filtering, and accidental URL variants among common sources of duplicate URLs. Its guidance is to canonicalize duplicate or very similar pages, not every page a crawler considers related. See Google Search Central.
If Google Search Console reports a different canonical
The status “Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user” means Google selected a different representative URL for a duplicate cluster than the one declared by the site. Inspect both the user-declared canonical and Google-selected canonical in Search Console before changing anything. See Search Console’s indexing report guidance.
If Google’s selection is appropriate, the status may reflect how it clustered duplicates. If it is not, review content equivalence and whether redirects, canonical links, internal links, and sitemap entries consistently support the intended URL.
Validate the change
- Recheck the original URL’s status and complete redirect chain, if any.
- Inspect the final page’s served HTML and confirm its canonical points to the intended destination.
- Verify internal links and sitemap entries use the preferred version.
- Run Moz Site Crawl again and review the affected rows. A new Moz crawl confirms what Moz observed on that crawl; it does not prove Google has reprocessed the URL.
- For Google’s indexing and canonical selection, inspect the URL in Search Console and allow for Google to crawl and process the updated signals.
Google’s selection depends on its own crawling and canonicalization signals, so a refreshed Moz report and a Search Console result answer different questions.
