To format an SD card in a Canon camera, back up any files you want to keep, open the camera’s MENU, choose Format, select OK, and confirm. Menu labels and controls vary by model; if your camera has multiple card slots, select the correct card before confirming.
Before you format the card
- Back up anything you want to keep. Formatting erases data, and Canon warns that erased data cannot be retrieved. Some models’ manuals specifically say this includes protected images.
- Use the camera’s format command when preparing a card for that camera. Canon recommends in-camera formatting for new cards and cards used in another device. A card formatted elsewhere may not work properly in a Canon camera.
- Check your camera’s manual if the menus differ. Menu names, controls, card slots, available format options, and supported card types vary by model.
How to format an SD card in a Canon camera
- Insert the SD card into the camera. If the camera has more than one slot, note which slot contains the card you intend to format.
- Press MENU.
- Choose Format in the camera menu. The menu location and wording can vary.
- If prompted, select the card you want to format. Some models require this step when multiple cards are available.
- Select OK, then confirm using the camera’s controls. Wait for the format to finish; the camera returns to the menu when it is complete.
Canon’s general guide describes the MENU → Format → OK sequence. The EOS-1D Mark II N manual, for example, adds a card-selection step. Consult the manual for your exact model if you cannot find the command or the prompts do not match.
What formatting does—and does not do
Formatting prepares the card’s file-management structure for use, but it is destructive for files stored on the card. Canon cautions that formatting changes file-management information and does not ensure the card’s contents are completely erased. Do not treat an in-camera format as secure erasure before giving away or disposing of a card.
Some Canon models offer a low-level format option, but it is not universal. The EOS-1D Mark II N manual describes this option for its SD card, identified as Card2. Follow your own camera’s manual rather than assuming the option exists or behaves the same way on other models.

Choosing a card for your Canon camera
Card compatibility depends on the camera model. Check that model’s manual for supported card type, capacity, and other requirements before buying a replacement or spare. A card that fits physically is not automatically supported. You do not need to buy a new card simply to format a working, compatible one.
