The “Cannot Verify Server Identity” alert means your iPhone could not confirm that the certificate presented by a server matches the server it expected to reach. It is a security warning, not proof that your iPhone has been hacked. Note the hostname shown in the alert and what you were doing when it appeared; those clues determine the safest next step. If you do not recognize the server, cancel the alert rather than trusting it.
What the warning means
When an iPhone connects securely to a server, it checks the server’s certificate to confirm the server’s identity. Apple’s deployment guidance says the certificate must identify the server’s DNS name or IP address—usually in its SubjectAltName field—and be valid and trusted through an accepted certificate authority. A mismatched name, an expired certificate, or a trust-chain problem can prevent verification. See Apple’s certificate and VPN configuration guidance.
The warning alone does not reveal why verification failed. The hostname in the alert, the app or action that triggered it, and whether it happens on one network or several help narrow the cause.
Six safe ways to troubleshoot it
1. Record the hostname and cancel if it is unfamiliar
Read the full server name in the alert and note what was happening: joining Wi-Fi, checking email, opening a website, or refreshing a subscribed calendar. If you cannot identify why that service should be connecting, choose Cancel. Do not tap Trust or Continue just to dismiss a warning for an unknown server. Macworld likewise advises against authorizing a connection with a wrong certificate unless you know why it happened: Macworld’s certificate-warning guidance.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
2. Check whether public Wi-Fi needs a sign-in
If the alert began after joining a hotel, café, airport, or other guest network, the Wi-Fi may require a sign-in through a captive portal. Before you authenticate, the network can intercept a secure connection and present its own portal certificate instead of the certificate for the server your app intended to reach. Cancel the warning, then use the network’s legitimate sign-in page if you can identify it. Otherwise disconnect and retry on cellular or another trusted network. Hebcal documents this scenario for its own calendar host, and Macworld explains how a hotspot portal can cause a certificate mismatch.
3. Verify the iPhone’s date, time, and time zone
Check that the device’s date, time, and time zone are correct. An incorrect clock can complicate secure-connection checks, but it does not establish the cause of a particular alert. Apple includes these settings among its initial checks for network connectivity problems: Apple’s connectivity troubleshooting steps.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
4. Update iOS, restart, and compare networks
Install current iOS software and restart the iPhone, then try the same action on a different network. If the alert appears only on one Wi-Fi network, the problem may be specific to that network; if it follows one account or server across networks, the service or its configuration deserves closer attention. Apple recommends a different-network test to check whether a connectivity issue is network-specific; that check is useful diagnostically but does not identify every certificate-warning cause (Apple Support).
5. Review VPNs, filters, and managed settings
A VPN, proxy, firewall, content filter, security app, or configuration profile may affect how connections are routed or inspected. Search Settings for terms such as VPN, profile, firewall, or filter, and review relevant third-party apps. Menu labels and available controls vary by iOS release and management policy. Do not remove a work or school profile, or change managed settings, without checking with your organization; it may be required for access. Apple’s network guidance covers VPN and third-party security software checks and advises users with managed configurations to consult their organization.

6. Check the specific mail account or calendar subscription
If the hostname points to a mail or calendar service, identify the account or subscription making the connection. Contact the provider or calendar operator if its server certificate appears expired, untrusted, or mismatched; the service owner may need to correct it. If the subscription is obsolete or unwanted, remove that specific subscription only after confirming what it is. Do not turn off SSL or switch to plain HTTP as a general fix: that removes HTTPS transport protection. Hebcal’s instructions involving its own calendar are specific to that service and should not be applied to unrelated accounts (Hebcal’s calendar-specific instructions).
Choose the next step by where the alert appears
| What you observe | Most useful next step |
|---|---|
| It appears just after joining guest Wi-Fi. | Cancel, complete the network’s legitimate sign-in if available, or disconnect and test a trusted network. |
| It names one mail or calendar server and recurs across networks. | Check the specific account or subscription, then ask its provider or operator to verify the certificate. |
| It occurs only when a VPN, filter, or managed profile is active. | Review the relevant app or configuration; consult the organization before changing managed settings. |
| It affects multiple unrelated services across different networks. | After checking time, software, and security settings, contact Apple Support for device-level help. |
These patterns help prioritize checks; they do not prove a particular cause. The warning’s hostname and context remain the best starting clues.

When to contact the service owner or Apple
Contact the mail or calendar provider, network administrator, or service owner when the alert consistently names a server they operate. A server-side certificate may need repair, and accepting it on the phone does not fix that problem. For a work or school device, ask the organization’s administrator before changing profiles or security settings. If unrelated services fail on multiple networks after the basic checks, seek Apple Support.
