Yes—for the archived replay, you can add chapters by putting timestamped segment titles in its description. YouTube documents how to add manual chapters to videos, but its public guidance does not document a chapter control for a scheduled livestream while it is actively broadcasting. Treat live display as unconfirmed: test your channel’s workflow before telling listeners they can use chapters during the show.

How chapters work with a scheduled radio livestream

YouTube handles scheduling and chapters in separate places. You schedule and manage a livestream in Live Control Room; manual chapters are added by editing a video’s description in YouTube Studio. A completed stream may become a Live Replay that you can edit. YouTube defines chapters as sections of a video, each with its own preview: YouTube Help: Video Chapters.

For a radio show, the dependable documented workflow is to note each segment’s elapsed start time while producing the show, then add those times and titles to the replay after the stream ends. The official guidance reviewed does not establish whether those creator-added markers appear to viewers during the active broadcast.

Add chapters to the livestream replay

  1. Schedule the show. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule the stream. Add the show details as usual. Scheduled streams may appear to subscribers as upcoming, and viewers can choose “Notify me.” See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
  2. Keep a segment rundown. During production, record each segment’s actual elapsed start time and a short, accurate title. This is a practical way to prepare the description; it is not a YouTube requirement.
  3. End the stream and find its replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. In Studio, look for the completed stream under the Live tab’s replays. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream via webcam.
  4. Edit the replay’s description. In YouTube Studio, open the replay’s details, add the chapter timestamps and titles to its description, and save. Follow YouTube’s manual chapter rules: begin with 00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. For example:
    00:00 Opening and station news
    05:30 Morning readings
    18:45 Listener requests
  5. Check the watch page. Open the replay and verify that the chapter breaks and titles appear and lead to the intended sections. Chapter access and availability can vary; YouTube says creators who do not have access to the feature can apply for Advanced features.
  6. Organize the archive if useful. You can place the replay and any highlight clips in playlists to make past programs easier to browse. YouTube’s livestream promotion guidance recommends organizing archives and highlights this way.

Chapters and DVR solve different problems

Feature When it applies What it lets viewers do
DVR During the live stream, when enabled Pause, rewind, and continue playback. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Chapters On a video or replay with chapter markers Navigate to named sections, such as a particular show segment. See YouTube Help: Use chapters, mentioned people and places, & seeking features – Computer.

DVR is for controlling playback during a live session; chapters are for finding sections in a video. Neither should be presented as a substitute for the other.

Manual chapters versus automatic chapters

For a planned radio rundown, use manual timestamps so the chapter labels match the actual segments. YouTube also offers automatic chapters, which creators can allow or disable in Studio, but they are not guaranteed: not all videos qualify, and not all eligible videos receive them. YouTube says chapter access may also be unavailable to channels with active strikes or content considered inappropriate to some viewers. Check the Video Chapters help page for current eligibility details.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your radio station also needs a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running around the clock, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
