Yes. YouTube can assess clips from your own livestream under its reused-content monetization policy. Owning or having uploaded the original recording does not guarantee approval, but clipping your own work is not automatically a violation either. The outcome depends on what the clips contribute and how clearly your channel shows your original authorship.
How YouTube’s reused-content policy applies to livestream clips
YouTube defines reused content as material already available on YouTube or another online source that is repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. The policy applies to live streams as well as Shorts and long-form videos. YouTube’s channel monetization policies describe the standard and explain how channel reviews work.
There is no blanket exemption for clips just because they come from the same creator’s channel. At the same time, the policy does not say that self-clipping alone breaks the rules. Reviewers consider the content and whether it is clear that the creator made or meaningfully transformed it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat makes a clip more or less risky?
Think of the distinction as whether the clip offers a clear original contribution—not simply whether you own the source recording. The following examples apply YouTube’s published criteria; none guarantees a particular monetization decision.

| Clip approach | How it relates to the policy |
|---|---|
| Posting a minimally changed excerpt with little context or added value | More risk: the creator’s contribution or the clip’s distinct value may be unclear. |
| Adding original narration, explanation, or critique that shapes how viewers understand the excerpt | Closer to YouTube’s examples of commentary-led content. |
| Reworking the material into a meaningful new structure, storyline, or substantive edit | Closer to YouTube’s examples of transformative editing, though not an automatic approval. |
| Publishing many near-identical excerpts | May make the channel appear repetitive or make its original contribution harder to identify. |
YouTube lists critical reviews, reactions with commentary, edits that add a storyline and commentary, and substantive editing as examples that may be eligible. They are examples, not safe harbors. For a clip, the practical question is whether a viewer can recognize what you added—such as context, analysis, or a new presentation—rather than seeing only a lightly trimmed copy.
Reviewers consider the whole channel
Reused-content review is channel-wide. YouTube says reviewers may look at videos as well as the channel description, titles, descriptions, metadata, and About section. They may focus on the channel’s main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, and the videos responsible for the largest share of watch time. If reviewers find a policy issue or cannot clearly tell that the creator made the content, monetization may be removed from the channel as a whole.

- Make the source and your role clear in the clip and its surrounding channel information.
- Give each excerpt a distinct purpose; avoid relying on batches of near-identical clips to represent the channel.
- Add meaningful context or transformation where it fits the content, rather than assuming a new title or a shorter edit is enough.
- Review the channel as a viewer would: does its overall presentation make your authorship and original contribution apparent?
Reused content is not the same as copyright
YouTube treats reused-content monetization review separately from copyright enforcement. Permission to use material, a fair-use argument, or the absence of a copyright claim does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements. Conversely, a reused-content concern is not automatically a finding of copyright infringement. Evaluate both issues separately when they apply. YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies also cross-reference reused-content rules.

On July 15, 2025, YouTube said its former “repetitious content” policy was renamed “inauthentic content” and clarified to include repetitive or mass-produced content. YouTube also said the reused-content policy—which covers formats such as commentary, clips, compilations, and reaction videos—did not change. TeamYouTube reiterated on July 10, 2025, that the update was not a new policy and reused-content rules were unchanged. See the policy notice and TeamYouTube’s July 2025 response.

If YouTube disables monetization
Check the Earn section in YouTube Studio for the specific policy issue and the options shown for your channel. YouTube’s monetization-disabled guidance says creators may be able to appeal within 21 days or reapply 90 days after suspension, depending on the case and available option. Follow the route and deadline in your current Studio notice; eligibility and available actions depend on the channel’s status.
