Yes—YouTube Live supports 4K (2160p) at 60 frames per second and HDR, provided your source, encoder, and stream settings support them. But a normal YouTube playlist is not documented as a direct live-stream input. To broadcast a sequence of prerecorded clips, play them through a compatible production setup and send that program feed to YouTube Live using an encoder.
What “from a playlist” can mean
A YouTube video playlist
A regular YouTube playlist is a collection of videos. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not document selecting one of those playlists as the live input. Instead, an encoder sends a program feed to YouTube Live. To make several prerecorded clips appear as one broadcast, play or assemble them in a production system and send its output to the encoder.
An HLS ingest playlist
An HLS playlist is different: it is a rolling list of stream segments used to deliver a live feed to YouTube. It is not a YouTube playlist of ordinary videos. YouTube’s HLS setup requires a compatible encoder and ingest workflow.
What you need for 4K60 HDR
HDR source and compatible encoding
The video entering your production system must actually be HDR. That might be HDR game output, a camera producing PQ or HLG, or prerecorded HDR clips played through a compatible workflow. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for HEVC (H.265), 10-bit video, and color metadata that matches the source: BT.2020 with either PQ (ST 2084) or HLG transfer characteristics. OBS is one documented software-encoder option when used with a supported hardware HEVC encoder. YouTube recommends HLG in its HDR guide. YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions describe the requirements and setup.

In OBS, YouTube’s documented HDR configuration includes a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space. Use the option that matches the source and the capabilities of your encoder; setting HDR metadata on SDR footage does not make the footage HDR.
Resolution and bitrate
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports 2160p at 60 fps. For that mode, it lists AV1 or H.265 ingest at 10–40 Mbps, and a recommended 35 Mbps for H.264. These are YouTube’s settings, not a guarantee that your encoder or connection can sustain them. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can maintain consistently, and test before broadcasting. YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and networks. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For HDR, YouTube’s guide says to leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. If you are unsure whether the encoder is producing a stable 4K60 HDR signal, validate the source, encoder output, and ingest health before relying on a public broadcast.
Protocol: RTMP(S) or HLS
YouTube’s HDR instructions support RTMP(S) or HLS. Choose a protocol your encoder supports and configure it according to YouTube’s current setup instructions. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s HLS guide specifies TS segments between 1 and 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. These are requirements for an HLS ingest implementation, not settings for a standard YouTube content playlist. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Choose the workflow for your source
- HDR game: Capture the game’s compatible HDR output and send it through an encoder that supports the required HEVC 10-bit output and metadata.
- HDR camera: Use a camera and production chain that output PQ or HLG HDR; confirm that the encoder preserves the format and metadata.
- Prerecorded clips: Play or assemble the clips in a production system, then encode the resulting program feed for YouTube Live. The clips and the output chain must support the HDR format you intend to broadcast.
- External HDMI source: A capture card may be useful to bring a camera or console into a computer workflow. It is not a universal YouTube requirement; check the card, source, computer, HDR format, frame rate, and connection compatibility before buying.
YouTube’s encoder workflow and available software or hardware options are described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Do not assume that every encoder, capture device, or computer supports 4K60 HDR just because YouTube accepts it at ingest.
Check the viewer experience and live readiness
YouTube says supported devices receive HDR automatically; viewers on other devices receive SDR. The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so the preview alone cannot confirm that viewers are seeing HDR. Check playback on a supported HDR device as well as the stream’s technical status.
