Viewers may see ads during a monetized YouTube Live rerun, but YouTube does not promise an ad at every break or say that it automatically places one between each gaming VOD. Whether an ad appears depends on monetization, ad settings, eligibility, and whether YouTube serves an ad to that viewer.
What “between VODs” means on a live rerun
A channel may play previously recorded gaming videos in a continuous YouTube Live broadcast. YouTube documents ads during monetized live streams and separately reports revenue from live replays. Those facts mean ads can be part of both the live viewing experience and replay viewing; they do not establish a special rule that inserts an ad whenever one VOD ends and another begins.
YouTube describes pre-roll and mid-roll ads for live streams. A mid-roll opportunity can fall during a VOD or near a transition, but the VOD transition itself is not documented as an automatic ad trigger. YouTube also cautions that an ad slot is not a guarantee: some viewers may not receive an ad. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and its explanation of how ads work on live streams.
Why one viewer may see an ad and another may not
Turning on monetization or scheduling a break creates an opportunity for an ad; it does not ensure one will be served. The channel’s monetization and ad settings matter, as do eligibility and YouTube’s ad serving. Viewers therefore may have different experiences during the same rerun. YouTube’s concise warning is: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”

- Monetization: The channel and content need to be eligible for the relevant monetization.
- Break settings: The creator can choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls for the live stream.
- Ad serving: A configured slot can go unfilled, so no ad appears for a particular viewer.
- Replay viewing: YouTube Analytics reports ad revenue for live streams and live replays, but that does not mean every replay view includes an ad.
Live-stream ad breaks versus ads on the replay
While the broadcast is live
YouTube describes pre-roll and mid-roll ads for monetized live streams. Mid-rolls may be automatic or inserted manually; automatic placement aims for natural breakpoints. For a rerun playlist, that does not amount to a promise that every VOD boundary will produce a break.
When someone watches the archive later
A live replay can generate ad revenue, but its viewing is not simply a guarantee of the same ad sequence shown during the broadcast. YouTube separately allows mid-roll ads on monetized uploaded videos that are at least eight minutes long. The replay’s own treatment and settings can matter; YouTube’s documentation does not establish that the archive inherits the live stream’s exact ad breaks. Read YouTube’s guidance on mid-roll ads in long videos alongside the live-stream rules.

Monetization permission
For Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue, creators must accept YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. That is a separate requirement from choosing where to place live mid-roll opportunities. Details are in YouTube’s monetization options.
What creators can control
| Live mid-roll mode | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | YouTube places mid-roll opportunities, seeking natural breakpoints. | YouTube recommends this approach. It gives the creator less precise control over timing, and a slot still may not serve an ad. |
| Scheduled | The creator sets breaks at intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. | More predictable spacing, but YouTube warns scheduled choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic placement. |
| Manual | The creator inserts mid-roll opportunities during the live stream. | More direct timing control and more operational work; YouTube warns manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic placement. |
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that had turned on automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that had not. That was YouTube’s reported comparison averaged across 207 countries in January 2024—not a forecast, guarantee, or causal result for an individual channel. The mode descriptions and guidance are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization help.
