Yes—an archived YouTube gaming livestream can earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue if your channel is in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), you accept the Watch Page Monetization Module, the VOD is public, and the video meets YouTube’s monetization and rights policies. That does not mean every replay will show ads or earn a particular amount. A public VOD may also contribute eligible watch hours toward YPP entry, but watch-hour eligibility is not the same as monetization approval.
What has to be true for a gaming VOD to earn?
For Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue, YouTube requires YPP participation and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. The archived stream must also be public and eligible under YouTube’s policies. Enabling monetization is not a promise that ads will run: YouTube reviews videos for advertiser suitability, and ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. - Channel: Your channel must be in YPP for Watch Page ad and Premium revenue.
- Module: Accept the Watch Page Monetization Module to earn from long-form and live-streaming videos on the Watch Page.
- Visibility: Keep the archived VOD public if you want it to be considered for qualified public watch hours and eligible Watch Page monetization.
- Content: The gameplay, commentary, and audio must meet applicable publisher rights, YouTube monetization, and advertiser-suitability rules.
YouTube states that creators who accept the Watch Page Monetization Module receive 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public Watch Page videos. This is a term in YouTube’s partner earnings guidance, not a forecast of what a particular VOD will earn; YouTube does not guarantee whether or how much a creator will be paid. It can. YouTube counts eligible watch hours from long-form videos set to public toward YPP eligibility. Livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD are excluded from qualified watch hours. A public archive can therefore preserve eligible viewing time, but accumulating qualified hours alone neither enrolls a channel in YPP nor approves the video for monetization. Check the current eligibility requirements and your channel’s status in YouTube Studio; individual eligibility depends on YouTube’s rules and review. Can gameplay footage and repeated reruns pass monetization review?
There is no blanket rule in the cited YouTube guidance saying that every self-rerun is allowed or that every rerun is prohibited. The outcome depends on the game’s commercial-use license, the value and originality of the content, and the channel’s overall compliance.
Check the game publisher’s commercial-use terms
YouTube says monetization of game content depends on the commercial-use rights granted by the publisher. Its gaming guidance warns that simply showing gameplay or software use for extended periods may not be accepted. It says: “Video game content may be monetized if the associated step-by-step commentary is strictly tied to the live action being shown and provides instructional or educational value.” When enabling ads, creators also confirm that they have the necessary rights to the video’s visual and audio elements. Review the license for the specific game and clear any music or other audio separately; YouTube’s general guidance cannot decide the rights for an individual title. Make the replay meaningfully original
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams as well as other video formats. Repetitive or mass-produced content can be ineligible, and YouTube looks for original, authentic value. A replay’s frequency alone does not establish whether it complies: consider whether viewers receive meaningful gameplay, commentary, instruction, or another original contribution rather than a minimally changed loop. The channel-level policy page records a July 15, 2025 clarification that renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content”; YouTube said the clarification did not change its reused-content policy. What revenue options are available on a livestream?
YouTube lists live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships among the ways eligible creators can earn. For ads, monetized creators can enable pre-roll and display ads; mid-rolls can be automatic or manually controlled. YouTube’s help guidance recommends automatic mid-rolls, but no placement guarantees that an ad will serve. YouTube reported that creators who selected live automatic mid-roll ads saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. Fan funding is separate from Watch Page ads. To earn from fan-funding features, YouTube says creators need to accept the Commerce Product Module and enable the individual features. Availability and eligibility can vary by feature and channel; check the options shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s monetization guidance covers the relevant modules and features.
A practical decision check before rerunning a gaming VOD
- Confirm channel status: In YouTube Studio, check whether the channel is in YPP and whether the Watch Page Monetization Module is accepted.
- Keep the archive public: If you want its eligible long-form viewing time considered toward YPP watch-hour thresholds, do not leave it unlisted or delete it. Confirm the livestream has been converted to a VOD.
- Verify rights: Read the publisher’s commercial-use terms for that game and confirm you have rights to all visual and audio elements, including music.
- Assess viewer value: Consider whether the footage includes original, useful commentary or other meaningful contribution, and whether repeated uploads could appear repetitive or mass-produced at channel level.
- Set monetization realistically: Enable the applicable features only when eligible, but do not assume ads will serve on every replay or that watch hours will result in approval or payment.
