Yes. A song playing only on a YouTube livestream’s starting screen can still be detected and lead to live enforcement or, if the stream is archived, a Content ID claim. YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content; its guidance gives no exemption for brief use or starting screens. The safest approach is to use music you have permission to broadcast and, if it is licensed, make sure the rights owner has allowlisted your channel.
What can happen while the stream is live?
YouTube scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. If it identifies a match, it may show a warning and replace the live video with a placeholder image. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance does not distinguish starting-screen music from music played later in a broadcast.
There is no stated short-use exemption in that guidance. A song’s brief duration or placement at the beginning of the stream therefore does not, by itself, make the use safe.

Live enforcement and an archive claim are separate events. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived livestreams are made after the broadcast ends, if the creator chooses to archive it. A claim may block, monetize, or track the video, and the rights owner’s policy can vary by location. YouTube’s explanation of Content ID claims says claims usually affect the video rather than the channel or account.

Permission matters, and a license may not be enough by itself
YouTube’s livestream terms say the provider represents that it has the rights necessary to use the content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. A song license needs to cover the way you use it in the stream and any archived video.
YouTube also advises creators using licensed third-party music to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. Without that allowlisting, a licensed stream may still be interrupted by automated enforcement. Confirm the permission and allowlisting arrangements with the rights owner before going live.

- Giving credit to the artist is not permission to broadcast the song.
- Buying or owning a copy does not, by itself, grant livestreaming rights.
- Choosing not to monetize the stream does not establish that you have the rights.
A Content ID claim is not the same as a copyright strike
A Content ID claim typically does not result in a strike. A different consequence applies if YouTube removes an active livestream for copyright: YouTube says that results in a strike and a seven-day restriction on live-streaming access. If the channel gets another strike, the restriction lasts 14 days. See YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance for the strike and live-access consequences.

If an archived stream gets a claim
Review the claim before acting
In YouTube Studio, check the claimant and the claimed segment. Dispute only if you have the necessary rights, believe a valid copyright exception applies, or believe the match is mistaken. YouTube advises disputing only when you are confident in your basis. Credit, owning a copy, and not monetizing are not valid reasons on their own. Read YouTube’s dispute guidance before submitting one.

Edit the claimed audio or segment
If you do not have a valid basis to dispute, YouTube documents these options for changing the video:
- Trim out the claimed segment.
- Replace the claimed song with eligible music from the YouTube Audio Library.
- Erase or mute the song or video audio.
These options are described in YouTube’s instructions for removing claimed content. Since June 2025, edits saved in YouTube Studio Editor cannot be reverted, so review the result carefully before saving.

How to avoid starting-screen music problems
- Use music you are authorized to broadcast. Check that the permission covers livestream use and the archived video, if you plan to keep one.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. If the music is licensed, ask the rights owner to allowlist your YouTube channel and confirm that the change is in place before streaming.
- Choose music with clear platform rights. For example, consider eligible YouTube Audio Library tracks, following the applicable terms for the track.
- Test your starting screen before the event. Do not treat a successful test as proof of permission or a guarantee against later enforcement; verify the rights separately.
- Have a silent fallback ready. If YouTube warns you during the broadcast, stop the music promptly and follow the on-screen instructions.
