Yes—Samsung says the Gear S3 can be worn in the shower. That guidance applies to the watch’s stated water resistance, not to every shower condition or every individual watch. Its IP68 rating is not a guarantee against forceful water pressure, and impact damage may compromise protection.
What Samsung’s IP68 rating means for the Gear S3
Samsung identifies the Gear S3 as an IP68 device and specifically includes showering, rain, and washing dishes among the conditions it can withstand. Samsung Singapore’s support guidance, last updated October 8, 2020, describes that use.
Samsung’s IP and ATM ratings explainer gives the IP68 liquid-ingress condition as accidental submersion in up to 1.5 m of water for 30 minutes. That figure is a defined test boundary, not a general depth or pressure promise for showers or other water exposure. Samsung also notes that IP ratings do not take water pressure into account.

When showering is a poor assumption
- The watch has been dropped or struck: Samsung warns that an impact can damage its water- and dust-resistance features. Do not assume a used, damaged, or repaired unit still has its original protection.
- The water is forceful: The IP68 depth figure does not establish a safe shower spray pressure. Samsung’s Gear S3 guidance does not give a maximum spray pressure.
- The water is unusually hot: Samsung’s Gear S3 support page does not specify a safe shower temperature, so it does not support a precise temperature limit or a guarantee for every shower.
Samsung’s rating explainer distinguishes IP ratings from ATM ratings, which address pressure testing. It associates a 5 ATM rating with Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro—not Gear S3—so that rating should not be attributed to the Gear S3.

How to care for the Gear S3 after water exposure
- After clean water: Dry the watch thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.
- After salt water, ionized water, or an alcoholic beverage: Rinse it with clean water, then dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.
- If the microphone or speaker is wet: Call sound may not be clear after immersion or when those parts are wet. Wipe or dry the watch thoroughly before using it for calls.
These are Samsung’s care instructions for the Gear S3; they do not establish that a watch with compromised seals or impact damage remains water resistant.
Is the Gear S3 waterproof or just water resistant?
“Water resistant” is the more accurate description. IP68 indicates protection under specified test conditions; it does not make the Gear S3 waterproof in every setting. Samsung’s explicit shower guidance is useful, but it should not be extended into a claim about every temperature, spray pressure, or the condition of every watch.
